Raven gasped, leaning back with mock shock. “Is that attitude from you? You’ve changed, Mia.”

Mia laughed, shaking her head. “You need to see a neurologist.”

“Oh please—”

“I’m the one who hit my head, and somehow you’re the one acting like your brain’s been fried.”

They both laughed until Raven winced, clutching her side.

Mia’s laughter stopped instantly. “What’s wrong?”

Raven groaned dramatically. “You’re trying to kill me. Don’t make me laugh. My abdomen hates you.”

The laughter softened again, a quiet moment of shared joy despite everything.

Mia took a deep breath, her eyes brightening with seriousness. “Christian’s my bodyguard. Lewis asked him to look after us.”

Raven froze, her eyes widening. “Lewis did?”

Mia nodded. “Christian and the others who rescued us — all from Lewis.”

Raven blinked slowly. “I always knew Lewis was something, but this?” She let out a breath. “Wow.”

Mia nodded in agreement. “I was shocked too. Christian’s sticking around until everything is resolved. Lewis

Mia remained seated, avoiding all eye contact. Then Christian spoke, loud enough to draw more stares. “Ma’am, we’ve arrived.”Mia gritted her teeth. “I know we’ve arrived. You don’t have to announce it to the entire school.”She gathered herself and stepped out, pretending not to notice the way some girls nearby were already smiling and whispering. One waved at her. Mia returned it with a tight smile, then turned to Christian, eyes narrowed.“Tell me you’re not following me to class,” she said. “Because you don’t have to.”Christian didn’t hesitate. “It’s part of my job description. I must.”Mia didn’t wait to argue. She turned, reopened the door she had just shut, grabbed her bag, and took off toward the faculty building, heels tapping fast against the concrete. She didn’t want him catching up.But then, just as she rounded a corner—She bumped into someone.A woman with blonde hair…Mia’s laptop bag slipped from her shoulder and dropped to the ground as she tried to steady herself a

Mia looked on, her gaze pinned on Christian. Her mind lingered on the bare line of his chest visible beneath the open collar. For a second, everything around her dulled. Her thoughts wandered to what that chest would feel like beneath her palm again, and the clean scent that probably clung to his skin. Then his voice broke through her thoughts—clear, deep, and professional.“Ma’am, we’re forty minutes away from the school. We need to get going if you don’t want to be late on your first day.”The word struck her. Ma’am?She blinked, stunned. Christian hadn’t called her that since the day she insisted he stop. That word used to feel stiff, impersonal. Why now? She hadn’t changed. She was still Mia.Or had she changed overnight? She glanced down at herself, then back at him.She opened her mouth to correct him, but the memory hit—she had said they’d keep it professional. Strictly professional.Fine. If he wanted to be professional, she’d wear it like a crown. She cleared her throat and d

The rest of the evening moved like it didn’t exist.Mia locked herself in her room, drowning in shame and the sting of rejection. The silence inside those four walls screamed louder than anything. She clutched her pillow and stared at the ceiling for hours, unable to understand how one moment of vulnerability had ended in humiliation. Her skin still tingled where Christian had touched her, her pride still raw from the way he had walked away.Meanwhile, Christian buried himself in the basement. The air felt heavier than usual, like even the walls knew something had broken. He kept pacing, jaw clenched, fists tight. He couldn’t imagine what it would be like to face Mia after that. But in his heart, he had made a decision. From now on, it was strictly professional. No lines blurred. His duty was to protect her, not take advantage of her pain.Upstairs, Raven sat on the couch, her phone pressed to her ear. She had called Noah more times than she could count. Still no response. Every call

Christian cupped Mia's face gently, his thumb brushing along the curve of her cheek, his fingers smoothing over her brow like he was committing her to memory. He stared into her eyes with a softness that stole the air from her lungs."Do you really want this?" he asked, his voice husky, barely above a whisper.Mia didn’t answer with words. Her lips met his in a kiss that trembled with hunger and heat. That was her answer—a kiss that wasn’t soft, but certain. She poured everything into it: confusion, need, pain, longing. He responded just as fiercely, his hands roaming her back like he needed to feel every breath she took. But then, something shifted.Christian broke the kiss and stepped back. His breath trembled, and his hands dropped from her body as if letting go of something sacred. His chest rose and fell, uneven, his eyes no longer locked on hers."I can’t," he said.Mia's heart plummeted. Her voice came out tight. "What do you mean you can’t?"He took another step back, like spa

Christian swallowed hard. His hands dropped away like they’d been burned. He stepped back, jaw tight, eyes not meeting hers. He’d crossed a line. Broken something he swore he wouldn’t. And yet… part of him wasn’t sorry.“I didn’t mean to,” he said, voice hoarse. But the way he looked at her said otherwise.Mia stood frozen, every emotion she’d buried clawing to the surface—shock, confusion, anger, something else.Something dangerous.Because for a second, she hadn’t wanted to pull away. Not even a little. She opened her mouth, but nothing came. And for once—he had no words. Then the silence cracked.Reality hit her like a slap, yanking her out of the daze. Her eyes widened. Her whole body tensed. Then she exploded. She stormed toward Christian and slapped him—hard. The sound cracked through the room. Christian’s head turned sharply with the blow, but he didn’t move. He stood still, jaw tight, gaze lowered, the sting spreading across his cheek like a brand.Mia stood in front of him, h

  • Chasing Midnight Promises    Chapter Fifty: Soft. Accidental. Brief. But real.

Mia walked slowly down the narrow passageway, each step echoing off the walls. The air was dry, thick with dust and an eerie stillness that seemed to press in on her. The corridor stretched longer than she expected, lit only by flickering bulbs that cast trembling shadows on the cracked concrete. She wrapped her arms tightly around herself as a sudden gust of cold air swept past. It wasn’t just cool—it was cutting, like fingers of ice crawling beneath her skin.A shiver ran down her spine, but she didn’t stop. Her legs moved like they weren’t hers anymore, like something deeper was pulling her forward. Then she heard it. A soft hum—low at first, barely there. It sounded like dozens of computer monitors buzzing at once. The farther she walked, the louder it became. Her pulse quickened. Curiosity and unease wrestled inside her.“Is someone living down here?” she whispered, brows tightening. “No… it’s just me, Raven, and Christian. So… who else?”The hallway curved, then straightened aga
