Nerissa’s POV

"Have you seen the morning headlines, Lysander, or were you too busy enjoying the 'undeniable chemistry' the press is raving about to care that your wife is being dragged through the mud by every gossip blog in the city?" Xander asked while he slammed a business magazine onto the breakfast table, staring directly at his son. I kept my eyes fixed on my coffee cup, trying to ignore the glossy cover where Lysander and Seraphina were pictured laughing together at a corporate gala.

"The press writes what sells magazines, Father, and if they find Seraphina more interesting than a woman who barely speaks two words at dinner, that isn't my problem," Lysander replied while he casually buttered a piece of toast, his voice completely calm.

"It becomes your problem when it makes this family look like a circus, and Malia and I didn't raise you to treat your wife like a placeholder while you parade an old flame around town," Xander snapped back, but before he could continue, Talia dropped her fork onto her plate with a loud clatter.

"Oh, stop acting like Lysander is the villain here, Dad, because we all know the only reason he’s in this miserable marriage is because Nerissa backed him into a corner five years ago," Talia said, shooting me a look of pure loathing. "She saw our family was going under and she used her little 'favor' to demand a wedding ring as repayment, so why should he have to act like he loves a woman who basically bought him?"

"Talia, watch your tongue in this house," Malia warned, her voice tight as she glanced between us.

"Why should I, Mother? Everyone is thinking it, and she just sits there playing the victim while our name is ridiculed," Talia scoffed, crossing her arms.

I gripped my napkin under the table, my nails digging into my palms as the familiar sting of her words hit home, but I didn't defend myself because explaining the truth felt like shouting into a void. They thought I used a modest inheritance to trap him, but the reality was that I orchestrated a silent bailout through Vane Holdings to keep the Blackwood name from disappearing, and I hadn't demanded the marriage for power, I simply hoped that five years of being his shadow would make him see me.

"Talia is right, Father, so let's stop pretending this was some grand romance that I’m suddenly ruining," Lysander added while he stood up, his eyes flickering toward me. "I paid my debt by giving her my name and a roof over her head, but I never promised her my heart, and I certainly didn't promise to hide the fact that I’m finally happy again now that Seraphina is back."

"You are a married man, Lysander, and your actions have consequences for Blackwood Industries," Xander shouted, slamming his hand down.

"Then fire me, Father, but don't tell me who to spend my evenings with," Lysander deadpanned, pushing his chair back.

Malia reached over to touch my arm, her eyes full of pity. "Nerissa, dear, don't listen to them, they don't understand how much you've done for this house."

"I think I've heard enough for one morning, so if you'll excuse me, I have some things to attend to upstairs," I said quietly, interrupting her, and I walked out of the room without looking back.

The rest of the day passed in a blur of silence until the front door slammed late that evening, and I heard the heavy, stumbling footsteps of Lysander coming up the stairs. He pushed into our bedroom with his tie hanging loose around his neck, his eyes bloodshot as he stared at me.

"Are you still awake, or are you just waiting here to see if I’ll finally say something nice to you so you can report back to my father?" he slurred while he walked toward the bed.

"I wasn't waiting for a report, Lysander, I was just going to sleep," I answered, but before I could move, he reached out and pulled me toward him, his grip tight and desperate. He kissed me with a kind of hunger that felt more like anger, and I let myself get lost in it because even a hollow intimacy was better than the cold silence he usually gave me.

We moved together in a way that was passionate but completely empty of warmth, and when it was over, he rolled away immediately and reached into the drawer of his nightstand. He pulled out a small emergency contraceptive pill, placing it on my side of the table with a sharp click.

"Take it now, I don't want to wake up tomorrow and find out you've tried to turn tonight into a permanent mistake," he muttered, his back turned to me as he pulled the covers up.

I sat up slowly, my heart aching. "Lysander, did you ever once imagine a future with me? Even at the very beginning, was there ever a moment where you thought we could actually make this work?"

He was silent for so long I thought he had fallen asleep, but then his voice came through the dark, flat and crushing. "No."

"Then why did you stay for five years?" I whispered, my voice cracking in the dark room.

"Because of the contract, Nerissa, but even contracts have an expiration date," he answered coldly.

I didn't cry, I just stared at the little white pill on the nightstand until the sun started to peek through the curtains the next morning. Lysander was already in the shower when I finally stood up, walking over to the bathroom trash can, and I let the pill fall into the bin, burying it under some crumpled tissues so he would never find it. It was the first time in five years that I hadn't done exactly what he told me to do, and I knew that everything was about to change because the wife who obeyed every command died the moment he told me I had no place in his future.

Lysander's POVI came out of the shower still toweling off my hair when I saw Seraphina sitting on the edge of the bed, my phone in her hand, watching me the way a cat watches something it's already decided to catch."Who's Nerissa," she said, "to be calling you at this hour."I stopped mid-step. "What?""Your phone rang. I answered it." She said it plain, like there was nothing strange about it at all. "You answered my phone.""It was buzzing on the nightstand while you were in the shower. I didn't think that was a crime." Her eyes stayed on my face, watching close. "Is it?""No. It's just." I set the towel down, buying myself a second I didn't really have. "Unexpected.""Is it." She said it flat, not really a question. "Because from where I'm sitting, it looked a lot less unexpected than you're pretending. She had your number Lysander. Not the office line. This one.""That doesn't mean anything.""Doesn't it?" She set the phone down on the bed beside her, careful, like she wanted m

  • Chasing The Wife He Discarded   Ch: 58 She Picked Up Instead.

Nerissa's POVI sat there for a long time before I picked up the phone.I told myself I was just deciding how to say it. Where to start. How much to give him at once and how much to hold back for later. That was the sensible reason, the one I could say out loud if anyone asked.I dialed before I could talk myself out of it.It rang twice. Then a click, and a voice that wasn't his."Hello?"I froze for half a second, phone pressed hard against my ear."Who's calling?" Seraphina said, when I didn't answer fast enough.I almost hung up. I should have hung up. Instead I sat there and said nothing long enough that she filled the silence herself."Nerissa." She said my name slow, like she was tasting it. "I'd know that little pause anywhere.""Where's Lysander.""In the shower. His phone kept buzzing, so I answered it." A pause, and I could hear something shift in her voice, curiosity sharpening into something else. "Imagine my surprise.""Tell him I called. I'll try again later.""Oh, I do

Nerissa's POVNicholas found me in the kitchen before I'd finished my coffee, hair sticking up on one side, dragging his blanket behind him like it still counted as pajamas."You're up early," I said."Nicole snores.""She does not.""She does." He climbed onto the stool next to me, blanket and all. "Can I have pancakes?""Ask the chef nicely and maybe."He slid off the stool and padded toward the kitchen door, already forgetting he was supposed to be quiet about it, and for a minute I just sat there and let myself enjoy every moment of it.The minute didn't last long.Rousseau's office called at nine to confirm the meeting, and by ten I was sitting across from him in a me small room off the Rue du Marché, no sign on the door, one lamp burning even though the sun was already up outside."You look like you haven't slept," he said, by way of greeting."I haven't. Get to the part where you tell me why."He didn't smile at that, which told me more than the words would have. He slid a sing

Nerissa's POVI didn't sleep much. I kept waking up every hour, checking my phone, half expecting a headline to already be sitting there waiting for me.By six, I gave it up.The twins were still asleep when I passed their doors, so I let them be and went down to the kitchen instead, where Priya was already sitting at the counter with two cups of coffee and a face that told me the morning wasn't going to start easy."You didn't sleep either," I said."Neither did you, from the look of it." She slid one of the cups toward me. "I have an update. You're not going to like it.""When do I ever.""The photographer. His name's Devereux. Freelance, like he said, works for whoever pays him that week." She turned her tablet around so I could see it. "We got his memory card last night. What we didn't get was his phone.""His phone.""He'd already sent two shots to a photo agency in London before Marcus ever knocked on his window. Standard practice for guys like him. Nerissa's POVI stood at the top of the stairs with my phone pressed to my ear, listening to Priya breathe on the other end while security moved."Marcus is at the gate now," she said. "Two more coming up the back road.""Tell them not to approach alone.""Already told them."Lucien came up the stairs two at a time, his own phone still in his hand, jacket thrown on over his undone shirt. "I'm going down there.""No, you're not.""Nerissa.""You're staying in this house." I kept my voice low, even though the twins were asleep two doors down and wouldn't hear a whisper through a closed door. "If something's actually wrong out there, I don't need you standing in the middle of it. I need you here."He didn't like it. I watched him not like it for a full three seconds before he nodded once and stayed put.My phone buzzed again. Priya."Talk to me," I said."Marcus has eyes on the car." A pause, and something in her voice shifted, lighter now, less careful. "Nerissa, it's not what we though

  • Chasing The Wife He Discarded   Ch: 54 Under My Own Roof.

Nerissa's POVThe house was quiet by the time Lysander's car pulled out of the drive. I stood at the window a minute, watching the taillights fade past the gate, and let myself breathe for the first time in what felt like hours. All I could feel for him at this point was just pity.I checked on the twins before I did anything else.Nicole was curled on her side, one arm hanging off the bed, the shark book still open on her nightstand where she'd fallen asleep reading it again. I closed it, marked her page with the ribbon, and pulled the blanket back up over her shoulder.Nicholas had kicked his off completely. I fixed that too, tucking it around him the way he liked it even though he'd never admit that out loud.I stood there a minute longer than I needed to, listening to them breathe.Lucien was in the study when I came down. Tie gone, sleeves rolled up, a glass in his hand he hadn't touched."He's gone," Lucien said. Not a question."He's gone.""How'd it go?""About how you'd expec
