Chapter 2

Author: Anonymous
Father gathered the finest treasure in the world for Rhea’s wedding gifts, even taking what was meant for mine.

He said to me, “Your sister is marrying far away to the merfolk. Since you’re marrying well, you should yield those worldly possessions to her!”

His blatant favouritism made my heart ache. I lowered my head, saying nothing.

Ariz couldn’t bear it. He squeezed my hand and whispered, “The dragon clan possesses countless treasures. I’ll have them sent over shortly. Don’t worry.”

The light in his eyes made me smile despite myself.

After having spent the last few days together, I discovered Ariz to be a cheerful person. Though he possessed the pride of the dragon clan, he never looked down on anyone.

Unlike Loire.

I caught sight of him out of the corner of my eye; his face was grim.

In my previous life, as his wife, I had long since learned to read his mood.

Rhea’s earlier actions had already offended him. Now Father’s disparaging words openly implied that marrying into the merfolk was inferior. For someone as prideful as Loire, it only fueled his anger.

Unwilling to watch my father and sister play at filial affection, I moved to leave with Ariz.

Rhea suddenly stopped us.

She addressed Ariz, “My sister has always been frail, less gifted than I, and even struggles with bearing children. Still she'll be your wife. You must not scorn her for these shortcomings.”

Even now, she was stepping on me while elevating herself!

She was clearly making things harder for me. I looked at Ariz anxiously.

He shot my sister a disgusted glance and said, “No need for Ms. Rhea to worry. Anny is marrying me, and I will protect her. To me, Anny is the finest woman in the world.”

Hearing Ariz’s reply, Rhea’s face twisted. She hadn’t expected such a bold response from him.

Hearing his words and feeling the steady warmth in his hand, my heart melted, and tears slipped down my face.

Thinking of Ariz’s failed ascension trial, my gaze grew firm.

In this life, I would do everything in my power to protect him.

On our wedding day, Father cried like a child.

Just as I felt a flicker of emotion, I heard my father whisper to Rhea, “Are you sure you want to marry that merman? You can still back out now. If need be, your sister can take your place.”

My expression turned cold. So did Ariz’s and Loire’s.

Though Father had spoken softly, both men possessed keen senses. They heard every word.

Seeing how foolish Father had become, I no longer wished to argue and turned toward Ariz.

Ariz took my hand, his expression somewhat unsettled.

I silently groaned, unsure how to comfort him.

Though clearly displeased, his touch remained gentle. He even produced several exquisitely crafted pastries.

Noticing my unease, his expression softened slightly as he said, “Though I’m angry, I know this isn’t your fault. I won’t take it out on you.”

My eyes stung slightly as I nodded.

Watching my father and sister, I couldn’t help but find it amusing.

Their behavior of treating marriage like selecting goods had already annoyed Ariz, let alone that merman Loire, who had never forgotten a slight.

Fortunately, in this lifetime, I had escaped.

I never saw Loire or my sister thereafter. Then again, it made sense. The merfolk dwelled in a remote stretch of the deep sea. Traveling there was no easy feat.Still, news of Loire’s failing his ascension trial reached my ears.He failed, and Rhea, bonded to him, suffered the backlash as well. This lifetime, Father still refused to give up on her. Yet, the merfolk were so remote that by the time he reached them, Rhea had already become mentally impaired. She returned to the human world with Father. Seeing her reduced to such a state, he could not bear to leave her alone. He stepped down as the leader of humankind and devoted himself entirely to caring for her. When Ariz finished telling me this, he studied my face cautiously.“Anny, you’re not upset, are you?”I shook my head. “I might have been before, but not anymore.”In the past, I truly would have been. For as long as I could remember, Father had favored Rhea. I’d believed that if I were exceptional enough, he might spa

The words sent shockwaves through the entire crowd, except for me.Seeing Ariz utterly disgusted, Rhea’s beautiful eyes filled with tears. Covering her face, she sobbed, “Ariz, do you believe in past lives and reincarnations? In my past life, when you faced your tribulation, I nearly lost my life because of your failure.“After being reborn, I didn’t know how to face you. I had no choice but to marry Loire. But I’ve always loved you.”Ariz cut her off quickly. “Stop… I feel sick. I don’t deserve this!”Rhea had laid bare the events of our past life, even embellishing her own role.In her version, I became the wicked woman who had hunted her down mercilessly and now had stolen her love.Ariz felt his brain couldn’t process it at all.“So my failure in the ascension trial was entirely because you formed a bond with me?!”My sister choked on her words. Ariz erupted in fury, “You fool! Look at your own strength! If you hadn’t bonded with me, my strength wouldn’t have fallen! Thank

At last, I understood. The reason I was standing here now was that the Sea God burned his own divine soul to grant me this chance at rebirth. He feared that even with a second chance, I might still end up married to Loire, so he allowed Rhea to be reborn as well.He knew that once reborn, Rhea would surely vie to marry Loire. As I grasped all this, gazing upon the Sea God’s benevolent face, I fell to my knees and wept, releasing all the grievances of my past life.Ariz knelt beside me, cradling me gently. The Sea God smiled with satisfaction.“You are my chosen heir. Alas, you are human.”“Sea God,” I said quickly. “Thank you for your grace. My husband is of the dragon clan. If you deem him worthy, I offer him the legacy!”Rhea sensed something amiss and shrieked, “How could she possibly be your chosen successor? Your heir should be Loire! She’s nothing but a bastard!”With a displeased flick of his sleeve, the Sea God sent her flying.Loire cowered, terrified, not daring

Coveting the empress’ throne, Rhea endured Loire’s violence without complaint. However, she soon realized he was nothing more than a hopeless cause with no ambition, and she did not even know how he had obtained the legacy. She shamelessly clung to me instead, irritating Ariz to the point where he nearly struck her.He held back from hitting her, but he did toss her out of the house. Finally sighing in relief, he said to me, “Your sister’s finally gone. Let’s pack up and hurry to claim the Sea God’s Legacy.“I can’t stand this godforsaken place any longer!”He looked deeply aggrieved. I quickly assured him, “The Sea God’s Legacy is about to emerge. I’ll take you to it, and once we’re done, we’ll return home.”Faint footsteps sounded outside the door. When they faded, Ariz and I exchanged a knowing glance. He burst into silent laughter. Seeing him so delighted, I couldn’t help smiling as well. We left the merfolk territory and dove deeper into the ocean. As expected, two litt

Ariz and I were strolling through the merfolk marketplace. It resembled a human market, except every stall glittered with treasures from the deep sea.Seeing how much I liked them, Ariz simply bought everything. As we wandered, we spotted Rhea and Loire nearby. His face was dark with displeasure. My sister looked worn down, casting him a careful, almost ingratiating glance. When they noticed us, Loire brought her over. The instant Rhea saw us, her demeanor shifted to haughty disdain. She curled her lips. “Some people are so foolish as to mistake trash for treasure,” she said coolly. “Young Lord Nithe, don’t say I didn’t warn you. My sister won’t be able to give you heirs.”Ariz’s expression instantly turned icy.Seeing this, Rhea felt a flicker of secret delights.“Anny and I will form a bond,” Ariz replied evenly. “She will share my eternal lifespan. Children will come in their own time. Don't bother yourself.“Besides, Anny possesses exceptional talent. Fortunately, I was t
