Bliss.
"Thank you. I'll definitely come by again." The lady says on her way out. Noise from the busy street whooshes in through the open door. "You're welcome. Have a great day." I reply before the door closes. The floor is a mess - littered with hair and plastic packaging. I grab a broom and start sweeping.
My stomach rumbles as I finish sweeping. My body requires her sustenance and she will not be denied. I go out to get food from a cute little restaurant down the block. I order to go since I can't leave the salon unattended for too long. I used to have people working with me but those weren't pleasant experiences so I work alone now.
The sun feels warm against my skin but not in a sticky sweaty way. It's evening and the little shopping district lights up. People are going in and out of shops or just passing by. But I'm too hungry to take in the beautiful evening scenery, I speedwalk to my salon. I imagine I look a little odd, considering the looks I'm getting.
By the time I get there, I'm heaving like a fish out of water - the distance wasn't even much. I'm so out of shape, it's baffling. I open the glass door and hurry inside. The air from the air conditioner hums through the store, it's cool - no pun intended. All my gratitude to whoever invented the A.C.
I sit in the chair near the wide display window and proceed to devour the food. I got cheesy beef burgers and curly fries and a cold peach drink. I bite into the burger and my senses are slammed with a burst of cheesy beefy goodness. This is what it means to live!
I'm chomping away at the last sacred bits of my burger when my phone starts buzzing. Its a call from Josiah - he's one of my close friends. I answer the phone and his cheerful greeting.
"Hello, Bliss the wiz?". He's such a dork. My baby.
"Hi Jojo." My cheeks warm.
"So... How's work?." His voice is soft.
"It's good but I'm not working right now, so I got something to eat."
"What did you get?"
"Beefy cheese burger, fries and a peach drink. The basics, if you will." I reply and take a sip of the drink. It sends a zing of deliciousness down my throat. I make a small noise of satisfaction.
"What was that?" Josiah asks. I hope I didn't sound weird.
"The sound of adoration. I've found my new favorite drink." I take more sips of said drink.
"Now I want to know what it tastes like." He groans.
"I'll buy it for you when you stop by the salon next time." The thought makes me smile.
"Thank you." He sounds excited.
I giggle. Like a lovestruck butterfly. "You're welcome."
"So... We're still on for today, right?" He asks.
"We? Who's we? What's today?" I ask confused.
"You asked Grace and I to come over." He says perplexed.
"Oh, yeah! I forgot." I did forget.
"Should we still come over?" He asks hesitant.
"Of course. I miss you." I soothe.
"You missed lil ol' me? I'm flattered." He teases.
"You're an idiot." I smile. He's so cute.
"Only for you, Mamas." He lilts.
I scoff. "Whatever."
"I missed you too by the way." He says softly.
My heart flutters. "Awwww. You're so cute." I coo.
"I am?" He laughs.
"Yes, you are."
"How?" He asks in disbelief.
"There's no particular reason. You just are." I pop some fries into my mouth.
"Mhmmm. Oh! I've gotta go... I'll see you later?" He inquires.
"Yes, you will. Have a great day, Bubs.' I tell him.
He laughs. "You too. Bye." He hangs up.
My cheeks hurt from smiling too hard. I eat my food while enjoying the view outside. Music plays softly in the background from speakers I hung on the walls. The setting sun paints the sky in a golden orange hue, seeping into my salon through the big window and door, etching itself onto every surface. Warmth - I feel content. I'm so cheesy! - no pun intended again.
Evenings make me happy because it means I'll be able to go home soon. I usually close the salon around 6pm. I'm already so tired. The door opens, disrupting my thoughts. My next appointment has arrived. Time to be professional, I guess. "Good evening."
................
I finally locked up a few minutes past six. I took a cab home instead of waiting for the bus. When I got home, I showered and changed into an oversized tshirt and shorts. I'm in the kitchen cooking spaghetti when Grace calls.
"Hey, big head." She hollers. She's so weird.
"My head's not big, you butt." I roll my eyes.
"Yeah, I do have a big butt." She says it in the smuggest tone possible. And let me tell you, my friend's butt is no where near big. It's not non-existent but it's not big.
"Whatever floats your boat. I don't want to talk about your butt. Why'd you call me?."
"I'm near your apartment and Jo's on his way too. Prepare for our arrival." I forgot they were coming over. Thank God I decided to cook.
"Why are you so weird! I'm cooking spaghetti.' I wedge the phone between my ear and shoulder as I look through my fridge for bell peppers.
'Thank God, I'm starving. Bye.' She says before ending the call. I hope the food will be enough 'cause my friends and I eat like hungry lions.
I decide to do vegetable stir-fry sauce thingy since it's faster. I start chopping the veggies. The spaghetti's already done, so I put it away and get to saucing. A few minutes of me doing some of my finest culinary work, I'm done with the food and it looks edible and smells edible, so it is edible. Boom, so much logic.
Since the food's done, I go into my room to put on some deodorant cause I don't wanna smell like armpits. I put my braids in a bun, return to the living room and throw myself on the couch which I bounce off of but I'm good. I like having my friends over, they give my life a little spice. I don't go out much, so this is my type of fun.
I'm already comfortably watching tv, when I hear knocking, followed by the banging and shouting that is Grace. Before my neighbors come out and find the source of unnecessary noise, I open the door and drag her in. Grace in all her brown glory grins at me like a maniac while I glare at her. She just smiles and pulls me into a hug.
'Bliss, how are ya?' She asks while I'm smooshed into her neck.
'If you let me go, I'll be fine.' She does infact let me go but not because I tell her to. There's another knock on my door.
'That should be Jojo.' Is what she says before opening the door. My stomach is acting weird.
And there he is, Josiah. He's hugging Grace or rather she's hugging him. They're almost the same height with only an inch difference. But the way she has him hunched over, you'd think he was taller than her by a lot. She lets him go and he looks at me. I blink too much?... I don't know but I put on my biggest smile - I think its too wide... 'Hi Jojo'.
After I let them in, we ate and washed the dishes. Our bellies full and our limbs like rubber, we were sprawled out on both couches in the living room. "Let's watch Ratatouille." Grace says from the single couch.I raise my brows at her. "Because we ate spaghetti?""Yes, indeed." She nods.Beside me, Josiah already has the remote in his grasp and is searching through Disney plus. 'Of course you're eager to watch it. You want to see your crush.' I smirk at him and use my left foot to poke his sides. He twists his body away from me. Wiggly little baby. 'Keep your foot away from me.' He laughs and swats my leg away."I don't have a crush on Colette. I just think she's cool.' He justifies."I didn't say it was Collette though. Did I?" I tease."But I knew that's who you were talking about." He says defensively. I smirk at him."I believe you Jojo. Don't mind Bliss." She coos at him."Thank you. You're such a good friend unlike somebody." He sniffs mischievously."Since I'm such a bad fr
Bliss. The days after the little get together at my place are neutral. Work goes on at a steady pace, more people come to my salon. I had Bluetooth speakers installed to play music in the background while I work, a little inspo from the dinner I ate at. I like the vibe it gives and it reduces awkward silences. I've never been a social person except when I'm around people I know. That's why I put speakers in the salon, to reduce the silence. I'm shy and nervous around people so opening up the shop challenges me to be a little more free around people. I've met a lot of different people with different behaviors and now I do have to interact. Its definitely a learning curve. One person I'm glad to have met is Eden. She's the owner of the convenience store next door. She always has stories to tell about people she met or her thoughts in general. I really do love her stories and theories - they make m
Josiah. I love buying Bliss books because she loves to read. I went to a new bookstore and bought two books I hope she likes. I want to give them to her when I see her. I didn't plan to use the books as an excuse to meet up with her but it kind of played out like that. It's been two days since I refused to tell her which led to me being threatened(not seriously though). I'm not even sure when we'll see each other because we're both busy, I'm a lazy bum and I don't know what time management is. I own a shop and sell ceramic ware, porcelain and Stoneware. Plates, vases, cups, mugs, all that stuff. I also dabble in pottery, a little. My job is flexible so I have more freedom than a normal 9-5. But I'm always busy doing everything and nothing at the same time. That's a terrible life habit. Don't be like me. Luckily, I have two people working for me - Joan and Tiny Tim - who isn't tiny
Bliss. It's Sunday and I'm excited about going out with Jo. I don't know what to wear and where we'll be going. I'm feeling kinda nervous and excited. This isn't a date, he just wants to give me the books he got me. My belly hurts, is this normal? 'You need to stop stressing out'. I snap out of my thoughts and turn towards Grace. We went to church together so she's dropping me off at home. 'I'm not stressing. Why would I? I'm just going out to eat with Jo. I'm not stressing.' I sound like I'm convincing myself. She scoffs. 'Uh huh. If you're not stressing over it, then why are you wringing your fingers? You've been doing it for a while now.' I immediately stop and try to justify my action. 'I'm just doing finger exercises. To loosen muscular tension.' What am I saying? She looks shocked. 'What does any of that mean? Put m
Bliss. The fluffy feeling from my outing with Jo is still fluttering around my insides. I didn't notice I'd been smiling until Eden pointed it out as I was opening my salon in the morning. After that I realized my cheeks were kind of hurting and then I tried to stop smiling. Yesterday was so fun and my new books! Wow. I sent Jo a thank you message again this morning. He's such a thoughtful person and it doesn't help that he's funny and cute. I feel like I'm on happy floating clouds and thankfully I just finished making someone's hair, so I have some time to talk to Eden about yesterday. Not like she wasn't already bugging me to tell her the details. Lazy Eden already put her part timers in charge of her store and parked her big head in mine. I tell her everything that happened and by the end of it I'm smiling at the memory. She's just staring at me and smiling weirdly. Creep. 'What? Why are y
Bliss. Sunday comes faster than I expected. Eden, Grace and I are buying popcorn and drinks for the movie we're watching. We decided to watch a movie first and then eat dinner after. Maybe we'll add something else later. We pay for the drinks and popcorn and enter the theatre 'cause the movie is meant to start in less than an hour. We go in after showing our tickets to the usher at the door. There's no one in here except for the two people sitting together near the front. We pick seats in the middle row because they're far from the A.C. The theatre is a bit cold. Thanfully the three of us expected that and brought sweaters. We're a tight knit trio. *Wink-Wink*. Get it? No? Ok. 'I think my body parts are about to freeze and fall off.' Eden grumbles and rubs her hands together beside me. 'It's not that cold.' Grace says while pulling on her sweater. Her act
Bliss. The Sun is setting - it looks like a big orange ball melting into the horizon and the sky is streaked with hues of purple-blues, oranges and fluffy clouds ~ I wonder what they feel like. Evenings like these remind me of sunsets spent in my Mama's salon. Which reminds me, I need to call her. The cool breeze flutters across my face from the open car window while my friends sing along to songs playing on the radio. I occasionally join in but my eyes unconsciously find their way back to the sky. I want to eat and watch the sun as it sets and I know it's cheesy but I like it. Sometimes I watch it by myself and it's so peaceful. 'Can we eat somewhere that has big windows?' I ask and lean in between the two front seats causing both of them to stop their singing fiasco. Eden replies without taking her eyes off the road. 'A lot of places have those. W
Josiah. I've been having ice-cream cravings since I watched food network last night. I love ice cream so much, I wish I could swim in it. Actually scratch that, I don't wanna die of hypothermia - It's not worth it and I'd have ice-cream stuck in places that it shouldn't be stuck in. Yuck. I haven't left my office since I got here even when it was my lunch break - I had food delivered to me. So many emails, phone calls, text messages... Who said making money was easy? I need a break. I walk into my assistant's office - which is attached to mine - to tell her I'm going out for a while. She shoos me away and tells me to be back on time for the meeting I have later. My employees greet me as I pass the general work area. The nearest ice-cream shop is within walking distance from my office so I don't have to drive. It's late afternoon and the sun is hot - perfect reason to get some ice-cream. The s
