LOGINEmily sat on the bed, picking up her phone to search for the next flight to Texas. “There's nothing left for me here,” she said to herself. She arranged her things disregarding the fact that she had paid for a week. All she wanted was to leave California with all its memories behind.
The next morning, she was on her way to the airport. She had arranged her things the previous night. She woke up before dawn because her flight was in the morning. When she arrived at the airport, she stared at every corner. It felt like one of her nightmares but it was her reality. An hour later, she boarded the plane without daring to look back. When the plane took off, she closed her eyes, allowing silent tears to slip down her cheeks. "This is the end of everything I once knew and the beginning of a new life,” she murmured to herself as she wiped the tears off her face. Five years later. The ringing of the alarm clock jolted Emily from her sleep, she quickly turned it off not wanting to disturb her toddler. All attempts to go back to her peaceful slumber were futile, as her busy mind was already awake. She stayed in bed for a short moment before rising to her feet to begin her day. Her first destination was the kitchen to get her usual dose of morning coffee. Emily was never a coffee person but as a mom, with a job and a son to prepare for school, the caffeine helps her get through her morning without feeling lazy. After preparing coffee, she started making plans for breakfast while gulping her coffee. After a while breakfast was ready, she trudged into her toddler's room to see the cute little boy still lost in his sleep. Emily always had a smile whenever she came to wake him up for school every morning. Five years ago, she'd made a very tough decision to be a single mom, to bring the child of the man who had left her broken to this world. It was a tough start for her at first, as a struggling young woman. Then it became the best decision of her life. She focused on creating a better life for herself with her son as her motivation because she couldn't bring an innocent child to suffer. Luckily for her, a few months after discovering her pregnancy, she'd found a job as a personal assistant to the project manager in a textile manufacturing company. After two years of working hard and being diligent, she was promoted to executive manager. Emily didn't know what would have become of her without her little boy in her life. Yes, things were tough at the beginning but the child was the light in her world. Still smiling, Emily stepped towards his bed and knelt beside it. “Good morning, honey,” Emily whispered in his ear, while raining kisses all over his face. A sigh escaped the toddler's lips, as he stretched his limbs on the bed, his eyes slowly opening to see his mom beside him. “It's Monday, baby. Don't you want to see your friends in school?” Emily asked gently carrying him from bed, with her arms wrapped protectively around him. “Good morning, Mom,” the toddler murmured in a sleepy haze with his head resting on Emily's shoulder. Emily walked to the bathroom to bathe him. After a while, Emily and her son were ready to leave the house, after having their breakfast. “Come on Ethan, get your backpack let's leave.” She urged the toddler, who immediately ran towards his room. Ethan returned with his blue bag slung over his shoulders, resting on his back. Emily noticed food particles around his mouth, she crouched to his level, wiping the particles with his napkin. They left the house for his school, after dropping him off, she headed to work. As Emily drove to work, she leaned back in the car seat, her gaze fixed on the road as different thoughts came to her mind. “Wow...five years had passed already,” she said with a surprised look etched on her face. It felt so unreal to her how far she had come. From the girl who was broken from betrayal and pain, to an independent woman who now had a reason to leave. Her cheeks had red stains as the thought of Ethan flashed through her mind. Even though he was Edward's spitting image, she couldn't hate her little boy because he was lovely and innocent. Her mind drifted to the office. For the past five years, she'd stayed away from the opposite gender, avoiding introducing her child. She wasn't ready to start all over again with another man. She chased them off with her son as an excuse. But Benjamin Moore has never been moved, he still wouldn't let her be. He kept making advances even when it was clear she wasn't going to give him a chance. "Maybe it was finally time to give Benjamin a chance?" She asked herself in her thoughts. These thoughts roamed her mind until she arrived at work. She immediately discarded her thoughts to focus on work. While in the office a knock sounded on the door. “Come in,” she called out without raising her head from the computer screen. “Are you planning to work through lunch?” The familiar voice asked in an amused tone. Emily raised her head to see Benjamin leaning against her desk. “I've got loads of work to attend to,” she shrugged. “Can't they wait ma'am,” he asked in a persuasive tone. As much as she would love to go out with him, she was trying to round up early to go pick her son up from school. Emily had convinced him that they could have lunch in the office together. So he left to get lunch. Benjamin was handsome, well-mannered, and very nice. She'd seen the way most female colleagues ogled and admired him but he's never given them the attention they craved instead, he showered her with it even though she was mean to him in the past. About ten minutes later, he arrived with two burgers and milkshakes. They ate together while having a little chit chat. After a while, she was back to work. She quickly rushed to her work so she could go pick up her son early. She couldn't afford to be late. After some time she was done with her work. She glanced at the time and quickly packed her things. She grabbed her bag and headed straight to her car. The drive to Ethan's school was quick this time around. As she pulled in front of the school gate, she saw most of the school children playing happily. She searched for him with her eyes looking at every corner. Then she spotted him standing at the edge holding onto his backpack. She came down from her car calling his attention. Immediately he saw her, he ran in her direction. “Mommy!” He called out running to give her a tight hug. Emily bent down to give him a warm embrace. “How was school today?” She asked while brushing his hair. “It was fine,” he replied, holding her hands. As they got into the car. Just as she was about to start the car. Ethan suddenly voiced out the same question he'd been asking all week. “Mommy, where's my daddy?” he asked innocently.Emily's thoughts were disrupted as Edward threw her into his bed. She immediately rose to a sitting position.“I promise I'll never hurt you again, Emily.” He sat beside her and reached for her palm, placing it flat on his chest.Emily's heart leaped, her lips suddenly going dry from lack of words. The sincerity in his eyes was almost enough to melt her heart.“Natasha is out of town for a few days on a business trip, and Joan has no place to stay.”“No friends or family?” Emily inquired, her chest boiling with anger.“Her friends are all busy, and her family resides in Asia.”Emily's gaze narrowed at him.“I'm not interested in what you choose to do with your child or your ex-wife.”Her heart ached because, deep down, she knew she was lying. And Edward could see it through her.“I have nothing to do with her.”“But her child is in your home!”Edward gulped, his Adam's apple bobbing.“It's pretty obvious you still want her, don't you?”“I can never want her back, Emily. She lied to me
Edward asked, his expression turning cold. The smile that had been on Natasha's face dropped.“Do I have to get a restraining order against you so it'll be clear you are no longer welcome here?”The more he stared at her, the angrier he became. He detested the fact that she showed up with Joan, her new ploy to manipulate her way back into his life. Because she knew he had a soft spot for the toddler. He regretted ever mixing up with this woman. The last thing he wanted was for Emily to see Natasha and her daughter.Edward expected her to respond with a sassy comeback, but instead, her voice softened. A sad expression was etched on her face.“I have no intentions of disrupting your peace, but I need a favor from you.”Edward's brows knitted together, wondering what she was up to.“I can't help you,” he stepped back, intending to shut the door on her, but her words stopped him.“I…it's about Joan.”Edward's eyes darted to the little girl who had been staring at him, watching the entire
Emily sat at the breakfast table staring at the cup of coffee in front of her. Her mind was far from the dining room.It was still stuck on Betty's words. Please don't leave us again. The words were still stuck in her head. What did Betty mean by us? Did she mean herself and her grandparents? Or did she mean herself and Edward? The thought alone made Emily uncomfortable. She pushed it away and focused on a much bigger problem.Which is Benjamin.A knot formed in her stomach. How exactly was she going to explain any of this to him? How was she supposed to tell him she wasn't in California, taking care of a sick aunt? How was she supposed to explain that she was currently trapped inside her ex-husband's mansion because of a ridiculous contract? And how was she supposed to explain that the contract still had power over her life even after five years? It just didn't make any sense. The lies were becoming too much, and she hated it.Benjamin had been nothing but good to her. He was kind,
“I’m sorry, it’s just…” Emily paused, biting down on her bottom lip while trying to find the right words to say to Benjamin.Because the truth sat heavily in her chest.Emily couldn't tell him she was trapped inside Edward Carter’s mansion, sleeping in the same room with him.She was terrified of what Benjamin would think, and scared of losing the relationship she had built with him because of Edward’s stupid games. On the other end of the line, Benjamin’s voice softened.“Emily?”She shut her eyes briefly before forcing herself to speak.“My aunt's condition got worse,” she lied. “So I had to stay back a little longer.”“In California?”“Yes.”“You should have told me things were this serious.”Emily swallowed hard.“She’s the only distant family I have left,” she added. “I just… didn’t want to become a burden to anyone.”The moment the words left her mouth.Benjamin had done absolutely nothing wrong, and yet here she was lying to him.“You could never be a burden to me,” he said.Em
Emily felt the heat of a warm body seeping into her, coupled with an arm around her waist holding her tight. It made her feel comfortable and loved, and a sigh slipped from her lips as she cuddled more against the body, not caring to know who it was, while wishing to fall deeper into her peaceful slumber. She heard a chuckle sail into her ears and the arm around her waist tightened pulling her closer against his chest. Warm breath fanned her neck before she heard the words.“You love being in my arms, don't you?”Her comfort was stripped the moment she recognized the familiar voice. It was Edward. And what the hell was she doing in his arms? She immediately snapped her eyes open trying to free herself from his hold, but his grip got tighter. In the midst of her fight, the memories of what she had thought was a dream, but now realized was a flashback, began to fade away.“Calm down Cupcake,” Edward growled into her ear.Emily hissed in response, holding onto his arm and trying to push
It's been five whole days since Emily signed the agreement that changed everything. Five days of pretending and reminding herself that this was temporary. It was just two years. That was what she kept telling herself every morning when she woke up in his mansion, which never for once made her feel comfortable because no matter how beautiful the house was, it still felt like a cage. And the only reason she remained inside was Ethan. Her son was playing upstairs, unaware that his mother was signing away two years of her freedom because she was terrified of losing him.Edward had offered her an advance payment after the contract was signed. He claimed it was part of the agreement, but Emily had looked him straight in the eyes and refused. She didn’t want his money and she definitely didn’t want to feel indebted to him.Two days after signing the contract, she had flown to Texas to get some of her belongings and Ethan’s things from her apartment. She had packed quietly and paid her rent i
Edward acted deaf to her question. For a minute, she couldn’t hold the documents properly. Her mind felt blank.Full child custody for what? Her throat tightened. Her eyes slowly lifted and drifted towards Edward who sat comfortably as if everything was fine.“Are you deaf? I said, What is this?”
Her fingers tightened around the phone while her heartbeat slowly began to rise.“Emily?” Benjamin called again from the other end.She quickly swallowed the panic rising from inside her throat.“Y…yeah, I’m here.”“Are you okay?” he asked softly, his voice sounding concerned.Emily closed her eyes
Emily stirred in her sleep, her brows furrowing as warmth surrounded her body. The blanket wrapped around her felt heavier than she remembered, and a familiar masculine scent lingered around her, making her pause unconsciously to catch her breath. She stayed still for a moment, then slowly opened h
She folded her arms tightly.“I am not sleeping in the same room with you.”Edward’s smirk only deepened.Emily’s eyes widened slightly.“You’re impossible!” she whisper-yelled immediately, scared of waking Ethan up.Edward chuckled.“But you’re still here.”Emily glared at him angrily while he loo
