Masuk
I began my morning the same way I did every day for the past twelve months, tying my hair with a cheap ribbon and pretending it held my whole life together.
I slept like a pig last night, but I still felt tired.
Nevertheless, I rushed to work.
Nothing grand. I worked full-time as a waitress in a cafe. Fifteen bucks an hour.
By seven o’clock, the customers were already waiting outside for their daily morning ritual that was a cup of hot coffee.
I quickly wiped down a table, humming softly, but then I became aware of the small group of customers sneaking glances at me or maybe at my ponytail.
Sometimes, I wonder if they come here for the coffee or for me.
Either way, I think I should buy a better ribbon.
“Hey, daydreamer.”
A familiar voice drifted in from behind me.
Warm. Playful. A little cocky, to boot.
I turned around.
It was Ryan.
He slid behind the counter with a grin, holding two cups of caramel latte—one for himself and one for me.
I took it with a smile. “You’re early.”
“I have a girlfriend who gets grumpy without sugar,” he teased, tapping my nose.
I swatted his hand away but could feel warmth blooming in my chest.
With Ryan, everything felt… simple. Soft. Normal. Or at least normal enough.
He leaned on the counter, watching me tug my apron strings tighter. “You’re working a double today, aren’t you?”
“Of course, it’s the weekend,” I said lightly. “And rent doesn’t pay itself. I’ll be here until midnight.”
Ryan frowned. “Why work so hard on your own. If you asked your family—”
“No.” My tone hardened before I could soften it. “I left for a reason.”
He sighed but didn’t push. He never pushed. That’s what I love the most about him. He allowed me to be ordinary unlike my father who always insisted things be done his way.
A large shadow took shape outside the café window, followed by the reverberating purr of an engine much too expensive for this neighborhood.
A black sedan rolled up—luxury gleaming even under sunlight.
The owner of the cafe, Lucia, ran out like a cat chasing pristine meat to greet the rich customer.
The driver stepped out, adjusting his pristine gloves. His eyes darted around until he spotted me through the glass.
I immediately turned away, heart thudding. (Why the hell is that guy here?)
“Did that guy stare at you?” Ryan asked, brows scrunched.
“No. You’re imagining things,” my voice cracked. “This is my first time seeing him.”
“Is that so?” Ryan didn’t push me. “I don’t know why you ran away from your family, but you should reconcile with them.”
“The customer count is increasing. I gotta work.” I took a step to my right.
He held my hand, which he hadn’t done before in the cafe, so I was a bit shocked.
Before I could free myself, he let go of my hand.
“We’re going shopping this morning. I’ll buy a few pairs of clothes for you,” Ryan stated with a smile.
I was not expecting that. It moved my heart more than a bit. “Why so suddenly?”
“I got a promotion.” His smile stretched a little too wide, eyes gleaming in a way I didn’t quite recognize. He sounded both happy and proud of himself.
“That’s great.” I felt happy for him, but I was at work, so I couldn’t give him a hug. “But I… Uh.. I can’t come shopping today. There’s work.”
“I’ll talk with Lucia. You’re not the only waitress here, and we only need two hours at max, so…” he persuaded me with his unrelenting gaze.
And so I ended up nodding with hesitation.
Ryan poured some of his coffee into my cup before heading to Lucia.
Meanwhile, the car driver entered the cafe and came straight to the table I was cleaning.
He sat down and kept looking at me.
“I’m not coming home,” I said in a low voice. “Please tell that to my father.”
He took out his mobile and speed-dialed a number. “Sir, I found Young Miss Elena. She refuses to return home.”
A few seconds passed.
The phone call ended, and the driver spoke once more, “Master Aldridge is sick. He wants to see you.”
My heart shook for a second, but then I quickly snorted, “I’m not a fool. He’s just lying about being sick to trick me into coming home. You should just go home, and don’t tell him that I’m working here!”
“He’s going abroad to get treated for cancer in a few days, and he wishes to see you,” the driver stated, a hint of sadness flowing through his tone.
My expression froze. My hands trembled a little. I put the coffee cup down. My other hand stopped wiping the table.
Just then, Ryan came over and put his hand on my shoulder. “I talked with Lucia. She gave permission. Be ready at 10. We have two hours to shop.” He quickly planted a kiss on my cheek before leaving in a hurry.
“Is he your boyfriend?” the driver asked. “What does he do?”
I swallowed hard, forcing my voice steady. “Tell my father I wish him all the best with his treatment.”
The driver watched me for a long moment before nodding.
As he walked away, I pressed a hand against my apron to keep it from trembling.
I had run from home to escape a marriage.
Now that my father knows where I am, I could feel my ribbon breaking—the life I tied together starting to slip apart.
My throat tightened as awful thoughts crept in before I could stop them.
Am I going to lose this job?
Am I going to lose Ryan?
For the first time in a year… I wasn’t sure I was ready for what came next.
Adrian went into the garden and lay down on the grass, where there wasn’t much lighting. He purposely went there so that he wouldn’t be spotted by others. The dogs in the cages were staring at him as if they wanted to play with him.Because there were many guests, the dogs would be forced to remain in the cages for a few more days.He took out his mobile and hesitated to call Elena. What if she wouldn’t answer him?Pursing his lips together, he put the mobile aside.“Just what are you thinking, Elena? Isn’t marriage supposed to be swimmed together? If you have some issue, shouldn’t we solve it together? Why are you staying outside and even working for some consultancy company? I can’t quite understand what’s going through your brain? You’re risking so much by staying outside right now. Do you at least understand that?”He let out a deep sigh. There were only two days left before the wedding, so he was growing nervous. What if Elena were to say no?The thought alone shook his heart to
Adrian returned to his room to get some peace and quiet. But to his shock, there were boy kids playing games in his room.He went to Elena’s room, but there were some female guests there. Adrian had never seen their faces before. They tried to start a conversation with him, but he excused himself.Adrian went to the rooftop. And there, the sisters, Risa and Vienna, were screaming as they were both playing a VR game.Their dad, Milo, was laughing.Adrian slightly rolled his eyes and was leaving, but Milo shouted his name and called him over.“Adrian, wait,” Milo said.Adrian reluctantly walked over. “What is it, uncle?”“You should play this virtual reality game,” Milo said. “It makes you walk on thin ropes and jump from one rooftop to another. It’s scarily crazy.”“Did you call me just to say this?” Adrian asked in a bit of a cold voice.“Yeah, your wedding is nearing. It is time for you to be happy and smiling,” Milo said. “If you play this game, it will lift up your mood.”“And what
Adrian did not hear much of what Lilian said, but the few words he heard were enough for him to understand that she did not hold back.He thought Lilian was on his side, but now, he wasn’t so sure anymore.“Is what she said all correct, Adrian?” His father, Gareth, asked calmly.Though his voice was calm, his gaze was anything but soft.“There will be no smoke without fire,” Iva raised her voice, but Gareth reminded her about the guests with a hand signal, and she forcefully lowered her voice. “There’s no need to discuss this. We are receiving one hint after another that she’s not going to help us.“First, she turned the Huefner family into an enemy, then the Paine family joined them. Now, she’s dragging us into the midst of Conreid Brothers so they can pull us apart. As if these two issues aren’t enough to make us lose our hair, now she’s joined some random consultancy company and is pulling strings to remove our loyal advertisers. How many more disastrous signs must be given before
Adrian and Lilian went to two more company owners that were associated with Claimer Corp.Adrian did not use force this time but tried to convince them with his words because these men were multi-billionaires with political connections. Threatening them would only do more harm than good.Eventually, they returned home.Lilian was getting out of the car, but he held her hand and stopped her. “Wait.”“What?” she glanced at him.“Don’t run your mouth.”“...About Elena?”“Yeah.”“I won’t run my mouth,” she said softly. “I’ll just tell the truth.”“Sometimes, the truth isn’t so obvious.”“Why are you giving so much credit to Elena when she left without even telling you,” Lilian retorted. “I called her, but she’s not answering. I don’t understand why she’s feeling so stressed right before the wedding. What is she so confused about? Why is she so insecure? Her actions make me wonder if she doesn’t like signing the prenup. She probably can’t say that openly, so she left home to build unnecess
“Bro, we should stop,” Lilian said nervously. But Adrian didn’t stop.As Adrian got closer, Jeremy and Lucas recognized him.“It is the big little entrepreneur Adrian Claimer,” Jeremy said. “Move aside.”The bodyguards moved away.Adrian came over and stood before them. They did not shake hands or exchange smiles. The tension was tangible.Lilian was sweating even though the weather was still cool out here.“What brought you here, young lion?” Lucas asked with a smile.“You both know why,” Adrian replied. “Stop what you’re doing with the Huefners. That’s all.”“And if we don’t?” Jeremy asked, smugly smiling.“You will be starting a war you can’t afford to win,” Adrian said, staring him back in the eye.“Do you realize who you’re talking to, kid?” Jeremy stepped ahead. He was a few centimeters bigger than Adrian. “I can eat you for lunch.”Lucas put his shoulder on Jeremy and stopped him. He looked at Adrian. “I have a son and a daughter. They are of age. If you or your sister marries
Lilian couldn’t believe that Adrian just left the car.She jumped into the driving seat and followed him quietly. “I can’t believe he’s doing this. He’s always in self-control, yet he loses his cool when the matter concerns Elena. She’s clearly his weakness. If he’s not going to question her… I will.”Lilian called Elena’s mobile. The phone rang. But Elena didn’t answer the call.Lilian called five times.Still, no response.Lilian’s jaw hardened. “What the hell are you up to, Elena?”Adrian stopped at the bus stop and waited.Lilian stopped the car there. “Get in,” she said.Adrian booked a car on his mobile. “You should go. I booked a ride.”“Seriously?”“Yeah, seriously,” he replied.“I called your girl, and she didn’t answer,” Lilian said. “I called six times. Still no answer. Is she still sleeping? Alone, or with someone else in bed?”Adrian’s expression didn’t change, but he kept staring at his sister without blinking.“I’m just questioning her behavior, Brother. Shouldn’t she a
“I’ve spoken enough,” Gregg’s voice was cooked with arrogance backed by numbers. “I don’t need to hear what he has to say. I don’t want to give him that luxury. You can shoot.”Steve looked at the soldiers and nodded.“It’s over. I shouldn’t have come here,” Gareth’s hands shook, and he closed his
At the military headquarters of the country.Gregg was sitting and drinking with the Chiefs of Staff of the Air Force and Marine Corps.“I’m going to stay here until the heat dies,” Gregg said, slurping the red wine. “I don’t have to worry about the security, do I?”“Haha, there are tens of thousan
At Paine mansion.Desmond Paine just finished talking on mobile. He looked frustrated. “How the hell did that brat survive and get home? And the bounty on his head was also removed? How? Who was behind it?”He called a close friend in the underground.“Help me find out how the bounty on Adrian was
