Felix POV

I don't know when the needle hit reserve. The red warning light just showed up out of nowhere, and looking around, I doubted I'd find a gas station anywhere close. Great. Just great.

But it looked like I had some luck left in me, because right there was a fancy looking place called “Freni e Frizioni”, the sign said. I pulled in, handed my keys to the valet without really looking at him, and walked in like I belonged there.

I made my way to the bar and sat down.

Each glass I ordered reminded me of my father's words, the way he said them like there was no room to argue. And somewhere in between the drinks, my mind kept drifting to that motherfucker too, the same one who left my ass throbbing every time I moved.

I kept drinking.

A fresh glass appeared without me asking.

I looked up. Two men. One already too close, smile practiced, eyes dragging over the open collar of my shirt where a dark mark showed.

"Looks like you could use some company."

"I'm fine."

He sat anyway. His friend flanked the other side. A hand brushed my shoulder, lingered longer than it should have.

Irritation simmered low and cold. I set the glass down carefully.

"Move."

They didn't.

The hand on my shoulder tightened. Something crude was said about the bruises, about how cooperative I must have been last night, and I felt something in my chest go still and quiet.

I stood.

The first one reached for my arm. I broke the grip, stepped inside his space, elbow to the throat, knee folding him clean to the floor. The second swung wide and slow. I caught his wrist, turned it, drove him facefirst into the bar. Glass shattered. Someone screamed.

"Get him," one of them barked, and that was when I realized it wasn't just the three of us anymore.

Two more came at me from behind, fast, and sober enough to actually be trouble. I turned into the closer one, took a hit to the cheek instead of the jaw, and hit him hard in the gut. He folded, gasping.

The last one hesitated half a second too long. I didn't. A hook to the jaw sent him crashing into a barstool, both of them going down together in a mess of arms and broken glass.

Five men. Under a minute. My knuckles split open somewhere in the middle of it, a fresh cut stinging under my eye.

I stood there in the sudden quiet, breathing hard, blood on my hands, the whiskey making everything sharp and far away at the same time. The whole place had gone dead silent, guess that counted as a commotion. My heart pounded louder than any of it.

Renato's POV

From the mezzanine, the floor looked smaller than it was.

The woman on my right had been leaning into me for the better part of ten minutes, chest pressed deliberately against my arm, perfume so thick it sat at the back of my throat. She talked about a charity gala, a mutual acquaintance, the usual soft bid for attention. I nodded when it was required and let the rest of the room move around me the way it always did. People performed. I watched. That was the arrangement.

The manager appeared at my shoulder, voice low.

"Sir. There's a situation downstairs." The manager's voice stayed low, careful. “A fight broke out”

I slowly set my glass down.

Which idiot's fighting in my club?I thought, already standing.

I ignored the soft protest beside me and started down the stairs without hurry. The room parted the way it always did.

At the bottom of the steps I saw the aftermath first, the broken glass, five bodies on the floor in various states of consciousness, and one man still standing in the middle of it, breathing hard, dark marks visible at his throat under an open collar.

I stopped and he slowly turned. His whiskey dark eyes found mine across the wreckage, unfocused at the edges but locking onto me with a kind of certainty that had nothing to do with sobriety.

Recognition hadn't fully landed yet.

But something in my chest had already gone still and sharp.

He walked towards me at an unhurried pace, stepping over one of the men groaning on the floor like it was a curb in his way. Every eye in the room followed him, waiting for whatever came next, the way people always waited when they thought they were about to watch something violent.

He swayed a little as he walked. Just enough to notice. Just enough to make something low in my chest tighten in a way I didn't have a name for yet.

Blood traced along his knuckles, dried dark at the edges, and I found myself watching it more than I probably should have. He looked wrecked. He looked reckless. He looked like he'd walked straight out of a fight and hadn't decided yet whether he'd won.

He was charming like that. Infuriatingly so.

Something about him kept pulling my attention no matter how many times I told myself to look away from the tilt of his mouth, the loose, unbothered way he carried himself even now, even bleeding. My blood was doing something it had no business doing, running hot in a way I usually reserved for things I actually intended to keep.

Oh what an Interesting kitten, I thought to myself while watching him close the last  distance between us.

He stopped in front of me, swaying slightly, grinning up at me like the whole room hadn't just watched him put five men on the floor.

I felt my own mouth curve, slow and pleased, before I could stop it.

"There you are," he said, warm and delighted, like he'd been looking for me all night instead of stumbling in here by accident.

"You have blood on you," I said, low.

"You should see the other guys." He tried to be clever. It came out slurred, the words dragging at the edges, the floor clearly tilting under him more than he wanted to admit.

He took one step closer. Then another.

His legs gave out on the third.

  • Claimed by my next door neighbour   Chapter 10: What a Coincidence

Felix POV:‘What the hell is he doing here? In Finland. In this exact building. In this exact elevator, on this exact floor, at this exact time.’None of it made sense. None of it was supposed to make sense, because coincidences this precise didn't exist outside of badly written thrillers, and I refused to believe I'd somehow stumbled into one.Fuck. Fuck. Fuck, this can't be happening to me right now. The words looped in my head on repeat, fast and useless, drowning out the quiet hum of the elevator around us. My mind kept circling back to the same impossible math. Venice to Helsinki, a city he had no business knowing about. And even if he somehow had legitimate business in this city, why here, this wasn't some landmark penthouse people just happened to end up in. It was quiet, unremarkable, deliberately forgettable. Nobody wandered into this building by accident. And yet here he was, standing three feet away like the distance meant absolutely nothing at all.Renato stood there, h

  • Claimed by my next door neighbour   Chapter 9: Signals

Felix POV:Sunlight hit my face like an insult.I groaned, cracking one eye open just enough to confirm the world had, in fact, progressed into daytime without asking my permission first. The laptop screen had gone dark somewhere in the hours I'd apparently fallen asleep sitting up, my neck stiff from the angle I'd left it at, my back aching from a chair that had clearly never been designed for actual human comfort.‘Looks like I've got a lot to do.’I dragged myself upright, rubbing at my eyes, and pulled the laptop closer to check the code I'd left running overnight. Still processing. Still nowhere near confirming what I already suspected in my gut. I closed the lid without pushing it further, deciding my brain needed something other than tracker signatures before it would function properly again.I went to shower first. Standing under water hot enough to actually wake me up, I let my mind wander over everything that had piled up in the last seventy two hours from the bar, the dock

  • Claimed by my next door neighbour   Chapter 8: You can run but you can't hide

Felix POVI hit the gap in the fence at a full sprint, metal scraping against my jacket as I forced myself through the narrow tear, and didn't stop moving until I felt open pavement under my boots again.Eleven fifty three.Seven minutes. Seven minutes to find whatever was supposed to be waiting for me on this dock, because if it wasn't here, I was as good as caught. The shouting behind me hadn't stopped. If anything it got closer.Fuck. I could feel them closing in.I ducked between two containers, chest heaving, blood drying sticky across my knuckles. My eyes scanned the water ahead, desperate for anything that looked like a way out.There. A single boat, engine idling low, lights dimmed almost to nothing. A man stood at the helm, watching the dock with a patience that said he'd been waiting exactly for someone like me to come tearing out of the dark.I didn't slow down until I was close enough to see his face."You Felix?" he asked, voice low, already reaching out to haul me over t

  • Claimed by my next door neighbour   Chapter 7: The Dock

Felix POV:The city looked different at night when you were trying to disappear from it.I moved through backstreets instead of main roads, hood up, bag slung low across one shoulder. Every sense stayed tuned to the kind of alertness that had kept me breathing through worse nights than this. No car. Cars left records. I had called a cab from a burner number three blocks from my apartment and had it drop me two blocks short of the docks. The rest of the distance I covered on foot, past shuttered storefronts and alleys that smelled like rust and last week’s rain. The air changed the closer I got to the water. Salt first, then diesel, then something colder underneath both. The specific stillness that came with places nobody wanted to be caught lingering in after dark. Warehouses lined the waterfront, most of them dark, a few with lights still burning behind windows too grime-streaked to see through. Dock 14 sat at the far end, past a chain link fence with a gap someone had clearly cut th

  • Claimed by my next door neighbour   Chapter Six: The Morning After

FELIX POV:I woke up slowly, no spinning room this time, no confusion about where my hands had been. Just a dull throb behind my eyes and the heavy stillness of a body that had actually rested for once.Right. Hangover. The normal kind, no strange heat under my skin, no missing hours. Just whiskey and a headache with an honest explanation for once.I lay there a few seconds, staring at a ceiling that felt unfamiliar and familiar at the same time, letting the pieces settle into place on their own. The sheets. That faint, clean smell clinging to the pillow.I didn't need two heads to know I was back in Renato's apartment. Again.I sat up carefully, bracing myself for some new ache to announce itself, the way my body had the first morning I woke up here. Nothing came. No fresh soreness, nothing new written into me overnight. Just the faint, healing traces from that first night, quieter now, fading into memory instead of pain.Whatever last night had actually been, it hadn't been that.Do

  • Claimed by my next door neighbour   Chapter 5: Interesting

Renato's POV:I caught him on instinct more than intention, one arm hooking under his shoulders before his skull could meet the floor, and for a second I just stood there with him slack against me, blood on his knuckles staining my sleeve, that ridiculous grin still ghosting at the corner of his mouth even unconscious. So my kitten had teeths, and a temper. And absolutely no sense of self-preservation.I looked down at the men scattered across my floor and decided none of it was urgent enough to interrupt what I was currently holding."Clean this up," I told the manager, without looking away from Felix's face. "Whatever they want to say happened, let them say it. Just get them out before he wakes up.""And the one who's not moving?""Ambulance, if he needs it. Quietly." I adjusted my grip, pulling Felix more securely against me. "I'll deal with the rest of it tomorrow."Nobody argued with me. Nobody ever did.I carried him out through the side entrance, past the valet who had my car
