~•~ The video had ended long ago, but the awful intimate sound of him and the woman kept replaying in my head. As we returned to the living room, everyone was silent. My friends were staring at me like I was a ticking time bomb but I was just trying to make sense of everything. I couldn’t even cry. I was feeling so many things at once that I tried to regulate my emotions. Logically, it wasn’t possible that Douglas would cheat on me. He always called me the most beautiful woman. He said I was the best partner he’d ever had. He even wished he had met me earlier. But the video was clear as day. It was filmed at an angle that I was certain he didn’t know he was being filmed. I was tempted to text the person who sent the video but I didn’t want to break my heart even further. I needed to confront Douglas. I needed to confront him as soon as possible. Just as I picked up my phone to call him, the door opened and the man in question stepped in. His regular lazy smile was on his lips as he saw the state of the house. “You decided to change the flowers last minute, didn’t you?” For a moment, I just stared at him, wondering how my lovely fiancé could do something so evil to me. His eyes darted from me to Noelle to Tessa, eyebrows furrowing when we all stayed silent. “Is something wrong with the preparation?” I glanced at Noelle and Tessa and they both nodded at me before packing up and leaving silently. Douglas looked behind them as they disappeared through the door. “Babe, is everything okay?” He rushed forward, attempting to hold my arms. I pulled away. “Did you cheat on me, Douglas?” I didn’t have the time to beat around the bush. My wedding was tomorrow. I needed to know whether or not it was going to go through. His face registered his shock at my question, then as if he had practiced it a million times, he laughed. “What are you talking about, baby? Why would I cheat on you?” He looked so honest that I started to doubt if the video was real. “You’re literally the love of my life.” I closed my eyes briefly. This was so hard to do as Douglas had never given me a reason to doubt him. But I needed to clear things up. I picked up my phone, played the video, and handed it over to him. “Isn’t this you, Douglas?” His jaw ticked. “Who sent this to you?” “Is that you or not!?” I yelled. His face was clear and his voice was unmistakable. He couldn’t deny it. “It’s me but–“ “But what?” I interrupted. “This is obviously recent. Your tattoo is right there. Even your hairstyle is the one you started cutting earlier this year. What the fuck, Douglas?” “Look, Rena,” he tried to hold me again. I didn’t let him. Who knew how many women he had touched with that slimy hand of his? “The wedding is tomorrow. Let’s not do this now, okay?” I blinked. “What?” He moved closer. “You’ve spent months planning everything. People have flown in from several cities just for our wedding. If this gets out, we’ll both look stupid. We’ll handle it privately. For now, let’s just go through with it.” My mouth fell open at his audacity. Something inside me broke then. If I hadn’t caught him red-handed, would he have lied to me forever? Did he even care about me? Did he intend to continue cheating after we got married too? “Go through with it?” I asked in disbelief. “You cheated on me, Douglas!” “It was a mistake, Serena! It meant nothing.” I stared at him, unable to recognize the man in front of me. He wanted me to dismiss his cheating like it was nothing. He wasn’t even apologetic. He just wanted to save face. How the hell did I not see the signs? “Serena, please. You love me. We can fix this. Tomorrow, we’ll say our vows. We'll pretend this didn’t happen. No one else has to know.” Pretend it never happened. I took a deep breath, the tears finally rolling down my cheeks. “Get out, Douglas.” “Serena–“ “I said get out!” The silence that followed was deafening. Realizing he couldn’t argue about that right now, he sighed and turned around, leaving the same way he came. As soon as he left, I fell to the ground and broke down in tears. Tessa and Noelle rushed in. They hadn’t left after all. Tessa knelt beside me, her voice gentle. “You did the right thing.” Noelle placed a hand on my shoulder. “You’re not marrying a man who cheats and expects applause for it.” I tried to nod but the tears wouldn’t stop rolling. They wouldn’t get it, not fully anyway. I thought I had found the love of my life. I’d imagine our life together, our future. I thought we were going to be together forever but it turned out I didn’t even know the man I was supposed to be marrying. Everything I knew was crumbling right before my eyes. How the hell was I supposed to move on from this? When Lila finally arrived, she was surprised to see us all on the floor. Noelle filled her in and she was about to go out and look for Douglas if Noelle didn’t stop her. “That bastard,” she seethed. “If he wanted to fuck everything that walks, he could have just stayed single.” Her words had me crying harder. He was supposed to be my Douglas, not every woman’s man. As if I wasn’t in enough pain already, another text came through. Through my blurry eyes, I checked it. It was the unknown number. [In case he tries to gaslight you into thinking it’s nothing, just know that this has been going on for two years. He visited my place last night.] Without thinking, I threw my phone against the wall. My chest tightened so hard I thought I wouldn’t be able to breathe. “Cancel it. Cancel everything.” I couldn’t even recognize my own voice as I spoke. Tomorrow was supposed to be the happiest day of my life. Now, I just wanted to erase it from existence.Serena Vale~•~I didn’t see the photos until Thursday evening. I’d spent the whole day in my new office, sketching initial ideas for Grant Tech and interviewing potential hires. I hadn’t signed the contract yet, but I couldn’t stop myself from working on it. It was the first company that had offered me a valid contract. The rest were still in the talking stage. My phone had been on silent for hours. I’d learned to keep it that way if I wanted to get any work done. It made me wonder how celebrities were able to leave peacefully. I wasn’t even one yet my notifications went crazy every day since my relationship with Nikolai and Rafael got confirmed. When I finally picked it up, notifications flooded the screen. As usual.Except this time, it wasn’t just random people.I had several texts from Lila.[Lila: Are you okay? Call me][Lila (2): Serena, answer your phone before I conclude you’re dead in a ditch somewhere]There were missed calls from her. There were missed calls from my mom t
Nikolai Vetrov~•~I hated VM Global Holdings.Well, I didn’t hate the company itself, but I hated the old fuckers who were trying their best to make sure the joint project Rafael and I were working on failed just so they could prove that we worked better individually.Three calls fell through today. Two partners were suddenly reconsidering. Meanwhile, one of the shareholders politely insisted that keeping Moretti International and Vetrov Industries separate was healthier for the market.Code for profitable for them.I don’t care though. I was going to make sure the project was successful. It didn’t matter who was standing in my way.I dragged a hand down my face and stared at the ceiling, taking a much-needed drag of the cigarette in between my fingers. I hadn’t slept for more than four hours in days. Anytime I closed my eyes, my brain ran numbers, scenarios, and threats. And most especially, Serena. She spent most weekends with us. She didn’t spend the last one with us and I knew it
Serena Vale~•~The cafe Marcus chose was minimalist, overpriced, and only two blocks away from his company. While driving to the cafe, I saw the building. It was huge, clean, and had Grant Tech written at the top of it. I arrived fifteen minutes early and chose a table near the window. Then I ordered my coffee and waited for Marcus to arrive. He came in at 10:59am.He was wearing a suit that looked like it was made specifically for him. He smiled when he noticed me and walked over. I stood up to welcome him. “Mr. Grant, it’s good to see you again.”“Call me Marcus.” He chuckled and sat opposite me. “Can I refer to you as Serena?”I nodded. Of course. I preferred being on a first-name basis with my clients. “You’re right on time.”“I try to be.” He said, glancing at my coffee which I’d gotten just five minutes ago. “Already ordered?”I nodded. “Didn’t want to waste time,” I said, hoping he didn’t take offense to that. I always had a hard time making a decision whenever I went to eat
Serena Vale~•~The first thing Rafael did when he walked into my office was look around like he was mentally calculating how much it would cost to improve it.The second thing he did was kiss me.Nikolai followed a second later, setting down three coffees and a box of pastries on the only flat surface available, which was currently the floor. He didn’t say anything at first. He didn’t kiss me. He just looked around. Took in the empty room. “This is good,” he said finally. “You chose well.”The praise did something warm to my chest.Rafael grinned, picking up a coffee cup from the floor and handing it to me. “You said furniture was coming today. Figured the CEO could use some manual labor.”“We brought extra screws, anchors, and paint touch-up. Whatever you need.” Nikolai said, bringing my attention to the toolbox in his hand.My heart did a stupid flip. They looked casual. They were in regular clothes that I’d seen them wear all the time, but it was different this time. Whenever the
Serena Vale~•~By Thursday, I still hadn’t responded to Marcus. My indecision started to feel less like a caution and more like fear. Fear of upsetting them. Fear of proving them right. Fear of choosing myself and dealing with whatever comes after.I hated feeling that way.Which was why as soon as I woke up that morning, I opened my laptop and forced myself to stop overthinking.I reread Marcus’s email one last time. Still professional. Still polite. Nothing that screamed trap even if I was actively looking for one.I drafted a reply.‘Re: Coffee and conversationMr. Grant Thank you for reaching out and for the kind words about my work. I’d be open to coffee next week. Feel free to suggest a day and time that works for you.Best,Serena.’I read it twice. Short. Neutral. No hidden implications. Then I hit send before I could talk myself out of it. Before the relief could properly settle in my bones, I heard a knock on the door. Lila opened the door before I could permit her to ent
Serena Vale~•~Lila was much more excited than I was to go office hunting. I wasn’t sure if she slept on the plane or not but she woke me up as soon as she came in with a large cup of coffee and a bag of donuts that were way too sweet to be healthy.I didn’t complain.I needed the distraction. I needed her presence. Tessa always wanted to come with me but she was stuck at some event.“You’re not doing this alone,” she announced like I had any plans on doing it alone in the first place. “I have strong opinions. I won’t let you start your empire in a depressing box.”“Get out, Lila,” I laughed. “Let me shower at least.”She reluctantly left the room, taking the coffee and doughnuts with her. I got in the bathroom, took the quickest shower known to man, and called the agent to let him know we were on our way. When we went downstairs, Lila took my keys and slid into the driver’s seat. I took the passenger's seat, taking a sip of my coffee.“Rule number one,” she said as she started the
