~•~ The video had ended long ago, but the awful intimate sound of him and the woman kept replaying in my head. As we returned to the living room, everyone was silent. My friends were staring at me like I was a ticking time bomb but I was just trying to make sense of everything. I couldn’t even cry. I was feeling so many things at once that I tried to regulate my emotions. Logically, it wasn’t possible that Douglas would cheat on me. He always called me the most beautiful woman. He said I was the best partner he’d ever had. He even wished he had met me earlier. But the video was clear as day. It was filmed at an angle that I was certain he didn’t know he was being filmed. I was tempted to text the person who sent the video but I didn’t want to break my heart even further. I needed to confront Douglas. I needed to confront him as soon as possible. Just as I picked up my phone to call him, the door opened and the man in question stepped in. His regular lazy smile was on his lips as he saw the state of the house. “You decided to change the flowers last minute, didn’t you?” For a moment, I just stared at him, wondering how my lovely fiancé could do something so evil to me. His eyes darted from me to Noelle to Tessa, eyebrows furrowing when we all stayed silent. “Is something wrong with the preparation?” I glanced at Noelle and Tessa and they both nodded at me before packing up and leaving silently. Douglas looked behind them as they disappeared through the door. “Babe, is everything okay?” He rushed forward, attempting to hold my arms. I pulled away. “Did you cheat on me, Douglas?” I didn’t have the time to beat around the bush. My wedding was tomorrow. I needed to know whether or not it was going to go through. His face registered his shock at my question, then as if he had practiced it a million times, he laughed. “What are you talking about, baby? Why would I cheat on you?” He looked so honest that I started to doubt if the video was real. “You’re literally the love of my life.” I closed my eyes briefly. This was so hard to do as Douglas had never given me a reason to doubt him. But I needed to clear things up. I picked up my phone, played the video, and handed it over to him. “Isn’t this you, Douglas?” His jaw ticked. “Who sent this to you?” “Is that you or not!?” I yelled. His face was clear and his voice was unmistakable. He couldn’t deny it. “It’s me but–“ “But what?” I interrupted. “This is obviously recent. Your tattoo is right there. Even your hairstyle is the one you started cutting earlier this year. What the fuck, Douglas?” “Look, Rena,” he tried to hold me again. I didn’t let him. Who knew how many women he had touched with that slimy hand of his? “The wedding is tomorrow. Let’s not do this now, okay?” I blinked. “What?” He moved closer. “You’ve spent months planning everything. People have flown in from several cities just for our wedding. If this gets out, we’ll both look stupid. We’ll handle it privately. For now, let’s just go through with it.” My mouth fell open at his audacity. Something inside me broke then. If I hadn’t caught him red-handed, would he have lied to me forever? Did he even care about me? Did he intend to continue cheating after we got married too? “Go through with it?” I asked in disbelief. “You cheated on me, Douglas!” “It was a mistake, Serena! It meant nothing.” I stared at him, unable to recognize the man in front of me. He wanted me to dismiss his cheating like it was nothing. He wasn’t even apologetic. He just wanted to save face. How the hell did I not see the signs? “Serena, please. You love me. We can fix this. Tomorrow, we’ll say our vows. We'll pretend this didn’t happen. No one else has to know.” Pretend it never happened. I took a deep breath, the tears finally rolling down my cheeks. “Get out, Douglas.” “Serena–“ “I said get out!” The silence that followed was deafening. Realizing he couldn’t argue about that right now, he sighed and turned around, leaving the same way he came. As soon as he left, I fell to the ground and broke down in tears. Tessa and Noelle rushed in. They hadn’t left after all. Tessa knelt beside me, her voice gentle. “You did the right thing.” Noelle placed a hand on my shoulder. “You’re not marrying a man who cheats and expects applause for it.” I tried to nod but the tears wouldn’t stop rolling. They wouldn’t get it, not fully anyway. I thought I had found the love of my life. I’d imagine our life together, our future. I thought we were going to be together forever but it turned out I didn’t even know the man I was supposed to be marrying. Everything I knew was crumbling right before my eyes. How the hell was I supposed to move on from this? When Lila finally arrived, she was surprised to see us all on the floor. Noelle filled her in and she was about to go out and look for Douglas if Noelle didn’t stop her. “That bastard,” she seethed. “If he wanted to fuck everything that walks, he could have just stayed single.” Her words had me crying harder. He was supposed to be my Douglas, not every woman’s man. As if I wasn’t in enough pain already, another text came through. Through my blurry eyes, I checked it. It was the unknown number. [In case he tries to gaslight you into thinking it’s nothing, just know that this has been going on for two years. He visited my place last night.] Without thinking, I threw my phone against the wall. My chest tightened so hard I thought I wouldn’t be able to breathe. “Cancel it. Cancel everything.” I couldn’t even recognize my own voice as I spoke. Tomorrow was supposed to be the happiest day of my life. Now, I just wanted to erase it from existence.Serena Vale~•~Rafael insisted we go out to eat for our third anniversary because we didn’t go out to eat often. He did the work of looking for somewhere nice and private and reserving it before announcing it to us so we had no choice but to follow through.“Reservation for Moretti.” He told the receptionist who quickly signaled a waiter who in turn led us to the room Rafael had reserved. She pushed open the door and froze, so the rest of us stopped walking. I peeked inside the room to see a woman’s back facing us. She was putting on a black backless top. The man she was with was putting on a black suit that looked like it was specifically tailored for him. His gaze drifted to the door, narrowing on instinct. Then his gaze softened and he stood up. “Moretti?”The waiter was horrified. “I’m so sorry! It seems there has been a mix-up. The room must have been double-booked.”Rafael ignored her and walked straight in. “Giordano?”Nikolai shook his head at the sight. “It’s fine. We’ll ca
Rafael Moretti~•~I didn’t know what it was about Serena but my sister was weirdly obsessed with her. I didn’t know how they got close or when they did, but they were suddenly acting like best friends despite their age difference.I had accidentally mentioned that we would be moving into our new house and Chiara insisted on joining us and ended up dragging her twin into it.She was currently standing in the middle of the living room directing movers like she’d been doing this her whole life. “That lamp goes by the window—no, the other window. The tall one. Yes, perfect. Serena, tell them the rug should be centered.”Serena, who was unpacking books nearby, glanced up. “It’s already centered.”Chiara tilted her head. “It could be more centered.”The mover looked between them, clearly waiting for the actual homeowner to speak.Serena smiled sweetly. “It’s fine where it is. Thank you.”Chiara huffed but moved on to terrorizing the kitchen crew next. I felt bad for the movers but there wa
Serena Vale~•~“Do you think we should buy a house?” I questioned as I watched Rafael flip the pancakes.Rafael paused and turned around to face me. “There’s something incredibly sexy about a wealthy woman.”I rolled my eyes. I didn’t know if luck was on my side, but when I started my agency, I didn’t expect any profits for at least a year or two. However, my agency was rising very fast. But being wealthy was definitely an exaggeration. I had enough for a down payment, especially since I wanted some place very nice and with a lot of space. Nikolai, Rafael, and I would need our own office spaces. I still wanted separate bedrooms because for some reason, that seemed to be working for us, and even if I’d never thought about it until now, I wanted to build a family with them.“What do you think though?” I prompted. We’d been dating for a year and a half. Was buying a house together too big a commitment? Should we wait until we get married? If we got married? I absolutely hated mentioni
Nikolai ~•~Serena dropped her bag on the couch and walked further to where Rafael and I were standing. “What does that mean? You want to leave? Leave where? Haven’t you already left the company? You want to break up?”I glanced at Rafael, then back at Serena. Their thoughts were written all over their faces and they were thinking the same thing. Breaking up was the logical thing to do, especially in the state of mind that I was in. I could tell they were already worried about me and I didn’t want to bother them further, but I was still very selfish. They were the only good things I had in my life and I wasn’t about to lose that too.“No. I didn’t say that. I just want to go away for a while.”“Where to?” Rafael demanded.“Should we sit for this?” I asked. Neither of them felt like sitting down but they did anyway. I sat on the couch opposite them. “I’m not sure yet. I haven’t thought much about it.”“How long will you be gone?”My tongue poked the inside of my cheek at Serena’s qu
Rafael Moretti~•~Nikolai was struggling. It was pretty obvious to everyone around him. The fact that he had to keep up court appearances added to his pressure, which was why I wasn’t surprised that he didn’t care about anything else except the case.Thankfully, it came to an end a week later. Douglas had dragged it on for as long as he could until he couldn’t anymore and as expected, the judge ruled in our favor.Marcus paid compensation that almost bankrupted his company and still had to step down because nobody trusted him anymore. Either way, his company had already taken a hit and I doubted it’d be able to stand again whether or not he was CEO.As for Serena’s ex-friend, Noelle, she also had huge sums to pay in fines since she was directly connected to the mole. Most of his payments came from her account. She was too stupid to see that Marcus had been using her, but at least she wasn’t stupid enough to take all the blame. She even tried to reach out to Serena to help plead her c
Serena Vale~•~Two months after Marcus officially denied the claims, everything became quieter. The case didn’t explode the way everyone expected it to. Marcus didn’t countersue. He also didn’t drag my name into it.That should have reassured me. And it did. But only for a little while.Jess stopped asking if we were going to survive. Clients stopped hesitating before they signed contracts. The agency became more stabilized than it had been. There were no over-the-top offers, but there were enough to keep us going. We had also moved into a new office space which everyone was excited about, making them work even harder.I should have been relieved. But Nikolai had changed. He came home earlier. He slept a lot more. He stopped obsessing over work and stopped snapping at work emails that annoyed him. It looked healing, but I could tell that wasn’t it.If anything, it seemed like he was tired. It felt like I was watching him slowly detach from everything in his life. One night, I saw hi
