~•~ The video had ended long ago, but the awful intimate sound of him and the woman kept replaying in my head. As we returned to the living room, everyone was silent. My friends were staring at me like I was a ticking time bomb but I was just trying to make sense of everything. I couldn’t even cry. I was feeling so many things at once that I tried to regulate my emotions. Logically, it wasn’t possible that Douglas would cheat on me. He always called me the most beautiful woman. He said I was the best partner he’d ever had. He even wished he had met me earlier. But the video was clear as day. It was filmed at an angle that I was certain he didn’t know he was being filmed. I was tempted to text the person who sent the video but I didn’t want to break my heart even further. I needed to confront Douglas. I needed to confront him as soon as possible. Just as I picked up my phone to call him, the door opened and the man in question stepped in. His regular lazy smile was on his lips as he saw the state of the house. “You decided to change the flowers last minute, didn’t you?” For a moment, I just stared at him, wondering how my lovely fiancé could do something so evil to me. His eyes darted from me to Noelle to Tessa, eyebrows furrowing when we all stayed silent. “Is something wrong with the preparation?” I glanced at Noelle and Tessa and they both nodded at me before packing up and leaving silently. Douglas looked behind them as they disappeared through the door. “Babe, is everything okay?” He rushed forward, attempting to hold my arms. I pulled away. “Did you cheat on me, Douglas?” I didn’t have the time to beat around the bush. My wedding was tomorrow. I needed to know whether or not it was going to go through. His face registered his shock at my question, then as if he had practiced it a million times, he laughed. “What are you talking about, baby? Why would I cheat on you?” He looked so honest that I started to doubt if the video was real. “You’re literally the love of my life.” I closed my eyes briefly. This was so hard to do as Douglas had never given me a reason to doubt him. But I needed to clear things up. I picked up my phone, played the video, and handed it over to him. “Isn’t this you, Douglas?” His jaw ticked. “Who sent this to you?” “Is that you or not!?” I yelled. His face was clear and his voice was unmistakable. He couldn’t deny it. “It’s me but–“ “But what?” I interrupted. “This is obviously recent. Your tattoo is right there. Even your hairstyle is the one you started cutting earlier this year. What the fuck, Douglas?” “Look, Rena,” he tried to hold me again. I didn’t let him. Who knew how many women he had touched with that slimy hand of his? “The wedding is tomorrow. Let’s not do this now, okay?” I blinked. “What?” He moved closer. “You’ve spent months planning everything. People have flown in from several cities just for our wedding. If this gets out, we’ll both look stupid. We’ll handle it privately. For now, let’s just go through with it.” My mouth fell open at his audacity. Something inside me broke then. If I hadn’t caught him red-handed, would he have lied to me forever? Did he even care about me? Did he intend to continue cheating after we got married too? “Go through with it?” I asked in disbelief. “You cheated on me, Douglas!” “It was a mistake, Serena! It meant nothing.” I stared at him, unable to recognize the man in front of me. He wanted me to dismiss his cheating like it was nothing. He wasn’t even apologetic. He just wanted to save face. How the hell did I not see the signs? “Serena, please. You love me. We can fix this. Tomorrow, we’ll say our vows. We'll pretend this didn’t happen. No one else has to know.” Pretend it never happened. I took a deep breath, the tears finally rolling down my cheeks. “Get out, Douglas.” “Serena–“ “I said get out!” The silence that followed was deafening. Realizing he couldn’t argue about that right now, he sighed and turned around, leaving the same way he came. As soon as he left, I fell to the ground and broke down in tears. Tessa and Noelle rushed in. They hadn’t left after all. Tessa knelt beside me, her voice gentle. “You did the right thing.” Noelle placed a hand on my shoulder. “You’re not marrying a man who cheats and expects applause for it.” I tried to nod but the tears wouldn’t stop rolling. They wouldn’t get it, not fully anyway. I thought I had found the love of my life. I’d imagine our life together, our future. I thought we were going to be together forever but it turned out I didn’t even know the man I was supposed to be marrying. Everything I knew was crumbling right before my eyes. How the hell was I supposed to move on from this? When Lila finally arrived, she was surprised to see us all on the floor. Noelle filled her in and she was about to go out and look for Douglas if Noelle didn’t stop her. “That bastard,” she seethed. “If he wanted to fuck everything that walks, he could have just stayed single.” Her words had me crying harder. He was supposed to be my Douglas, not every woman’s man. As if I wasn’t in enough pain already, another text came through. Through my blurry eyes, I checked it. It was the unknown number. [In case he tries to gaslight you into thinking it’s nothing, just know that this has been going on for two years. He visited my place last night.] Without thinking, I threw my phone against the wall. My chest tightened so hard I thought I wouldn’t be able to breathe. “Cancel it. Cancel everything.” I couldn’t even recognize my own voice as I spoke. Tomorrow was supposed to be the happiest day of my life. Now, I just wanted to erase it from existence.Serena Vale~•~Lila was much more excited than I was to go office hunting. I wasn’t sure if she slept on the plane or not but she woke me up as soon as she came in with a large cup of coffee and a bag of donuts that were way too sweet to be healthy.I didn’t complain.I needed the distraction. I needed her presence. Tessa always wanted to come with me but she was stuck at some event.“You’re not doing this alone,” she announced like I had any plans on doing it alone in the first place. “I have strong opinions. I won’t let you start your empire in a depressing box.”“Get out, Lila,” I laughed. “Let me shower at least.”She reluctantly left the room, taking the coffee and doughnuts with her. I got in the bathroom, took the quickest shower known to man, and called the agent to let him know we were on our way. When we went downstairs, Lila took my keys and slid into the driver’s seat. I took the passenger's seat, taking a sip of my coffee.“Rule number one,” she said as she started the
Serena Vale~•~I went back home after that. I knew it was immature to run away after every silly argument but it wasn’t like that was my home anyway. Rafael tried to stop me when I decided to leave, but he didn’t succeed.I spent that night tossing and turning in bed. Two sides of my brain were fighting. I wouldn’t want either of them to be connected to a person I hated just for business, but turning down Marcus’ offer, if he had any for me, wasn’t very logical either. If Douglas magically came out of prison and wanted to collaborate with them, I would feel betrayed if they agreed even if I wouldn’t explicitly tell them not to work with him. Then again, Marcus wasn’t the one who stole Vetrov's software. It was his father. Making one person pay for the other’s sin was illogical. There was no right decision when it came to this. I accepted that and I was able to have three hours of sleep. When I woke up the next morning, I took my laptop with me and went straight to a coffee shop. I
Nikolai Vetrov~•~My words hung in the air for a few seconds and Serena’s hand tightened around her fork. Her wide eyes were stuck on mine as she asked, “What?”I exhaled slowly. I didn’t like talking about my parents’ deaths. I didn’t like talking about a suspicion I never got to confirm because the accident happened eighteen years ago. Eight years before I became legal. Twelve years before I had access to important files.I took a seat on the couch opposite hers. “I’m not saying he killed my parents. I don’t know what he was capable of at twenty, but my father spent months working on a piece of software. He poured everything into it. He was weeks away from launch until my birthday night.”A muscle in my jaw ticked at the reminder but I forced myself to keep calm. Serena dropped her plate on the coffee table, giving me all her attention.“My father had been working for days nonstop. I didn’t care then because I was a child so I threw a tantrum when he wasn’t home for my birthday. Th
Serena Vale~•~“So are we ever going to talk about Marcus Grant?”I didn’t turn immediately. I focused on transferring the egg from the pan to the plate before I spoke. “What do you want to talk about?”Nikolai had never been the jealous type. Well, at least, not that I knew of. Even when Grayson Wolfe was obviously pursuing me, they didn’t question me every two seconds and weren’t bothered when I went for one-on-one meetings with him.But he had been hung up on Marcus Grant since Lila mentioned him in the car last night. The only reason we lasted this long without talking about him was because of sex.“Did he approach you? Or did you go to him?”I turned around to see that he was leaning against the kitchen island with his arms crossed. “He came to me. We talked. We exchanged cards and that was it.”“He went to you?”“Mmhmm.” I nodded. “He heard about my campaigns while I was working with Rafael.”Nikolai didn’t respond for a while. He just stared at me, his lip caught between his t
Nikolai Vetrov~•~As soon as Serena texted me that she was ready to leave, I was out of the house instantly. I got in my car and drove straight to the venue of her mixer. I stayed there for about five minutes before they came out. Serena looked magnificent in her red dress. The picture she sent hadn’t done justice to it. The slit flashed her thigh with every step she took. Lila followed behind her with a gold dress that matched Serena’s shoes, but my eyes lasted a second on her before they went back to Serena.I watched as Serena’s eyes searched around the curb before her eyes finally landed on my car. I got out then, rounded the hood, and opened the back door for them wordlessly.Serena grinned and tugged her friend so they would walk faster. Lila got in first, saying a quick thanks. But Serena’s eyes raked over me. “You clean up nice for a chauffeur.”“I’m multitalented.” I shrugged, offering her my hand. As I helped her in, I let my thumb brush the inside of her wrist long enough
Serena Vale~•~The venue was louder than I expected. Not because of loud music or over-the-top yelling, but the constant buzz of conversation reminded me that it was a networking mixer. Tall cocktail tables occupied the room, each one surrounded by people in custom suits and dresses, looking like they belonged there.I felt out of place, but Lila’s hand around mine made me feel more confident. “Rule number one,” Lila murmured as we stepped in, immediately stealing two flutes of champagne from a passing server and handing one to me. “No selling unless they ask.”I nodded. “Rule number two?”“Smile confidently.”Lila got into it immediately. She didn’t give me time to give myself a pep talk before she pulled me along with her to a small circle near the bar. “Serena, this is Marco DeLuca and Vittoria DeLuca, his wife. They run a luxury hospitality group.”Marco smiled politely. “Nice to meet you, Serena.”Vittoria gave me a wave.Lila continued. “Serena is a marketer. She just left a
