Lake's POV

Staring at the door to the house, I sighed, thinking about how much I wanted to get inside, but the house was locked, and I didn’t want to set off the alarm.

However, I was dying to get into my mate’s room and feel him. I missed Kairos, and it was crazy how much I missed him because he had just left. So I needed to pull myself together, and I did.

Walking away from the house, I gave it one last glance before jogging toward the gate and leaping over the fence, the same way I had gotten in.

I was still busy pulling the boat to the water when I thought to stop and check on Alec and hear if there had been any developments before I took the boat out. That was when he told me Reed had been found.

My heart jumped for joy, my mind flooded with relief. Reed and I weren’t best friends like he was with Alec, but the guy had been good to me ever since I got to Silverglade. Not to mention how good he’d been to my mate.

Kairos practically depended on him for everything, and Reed never co

Third-party POVThere was a pause after Valanthria's words before the Mer king lost it. He asked, "Why his son?" adding that his son was meant to be king; he was his firstborn. But Valanthria didn’t let the king speak; she rose just as he had done, asking whose son would have been the good choice to sacrifice. The Mer king thought she was making a mistake, asking why Kairos was his first, the one marked king, if he had to be a sacrifice.“Who told you that a firstborn has to be king, my king?” Valanthria asked, causing the king to pivot toward her with a blazing stare.Valanthria asked again before he could say anything. Which son, my king, paid attention to you all the time? And which son did you have to repeatedly say the same thing to before he would comply with your wishes? She shot him a knowing glance, and the king opened his mouth to speak, but his gaze strayed to Darian, who looked back at him.Valanthria closed the gap between her and the Mer king. “You have always known who

Third-party POVThe king stared at his queen, face pale, lips parting in disbelief. He looked toward the palace interior as though expecting this to be a dream until he slowly swam forward. And there she was. Velanthria sat upon a smooth stone bench near their table, legs crossed, her flaming hair suspended in the water like molten threads. She had made herself at home.A bowl of harvested fruit from the southern currents sat untouched on the table until she reached for one: a deep-blue kelpan apple slick with salt and still attached to curling seaweed vines. She raised it to her lips and bit into it with a casual smile, the crunch echoing like a clap in the silence.“The gods needed a messenger,” she said as she chewed slowly, then swallowed. “And I answered.”She set the apple down and rose, bowing to the Mer King.“My King.”Then she sat down while the king continued to stare at her, unmoving, screaming in his head that someone wake him up; he had seen too much. But just then, the

Reed's POV I woke to my father shaking my shoulder, his voice low but urgent. “Reed,” he said. “Did you see what’s happening?” I blinked, disoriented, my mouth dry.“No. What’s happening?”He turned and said over his shoulder, “Come. Look for yourself.” And I climbed out of bed, dragging my feet after him, my chest tight with unease. We stepped onto the balcony, and he handed me a pair of binoculars while the cold breeze bit through my thin pajamas as I raised them to my eyes, which widened. The sea wasn’t just churning, it was roaring, and just then, as if on cue, the sirens blared over the city.Waves surged unnaturally high, spilling over seawalls, tearing through barriers like paper, and my grip on the binoculars faltered. My stomach twisted as I recalled the night Kairos and Darian fought, praying this had nothing to do with Kairos.I had been restless since taking Kairos back to the ocean, nervous about the blowback when he told his family about him and Lake. And it became wors

Lake's POVCrashing into the sand jolted something back into place inside me, like my brain suddenly rebooted. Everything hit me: the storm, the water, and the Mer King. And then Kairos.I scrambled out of his arms, gasping, my heart thundering in my chest. His voice reached me, but it sounded so far away.“It’s okay. You’re safe now-”But I scrambled to my feet, and it was then that I felt something was wrong. Falling back in the sand, my eyes trailed to my legs, and my heart seized. They were gone, and in their place, glistening under the broken sky, was a silver tail… long… and alien.I screamed so loud I felt it tear through my throat as my mind completely went, and I shook it off me, trying to crawl backward, trying to undo it… whatever it was.Kairos grabbed me, but I thrashed, wild and panicked.“My Tayla! Lake!”But I felt like I was losing my mind. This couldn’t be happening. And just then, I felt something else brush against my shoulders, something heavy and foreign. My fing

Third-party POVLake scrambled to get up, dizzy from the back of his head hitting the wall, but he didn’t make it to his feet; he was ripped off the ground with such speed that a violent surge of vomit burst from his mouth. His body lurched, weightless, and he was airborne before he could process what was happening. His eyes widened in sheer shock just as he was hurled into the water with crushing force. The cold hit him first, then the blur of motion. The Mer King was on him again, giving him no chance to breathe, and Lake barely caught sight of the glowing trident before they plunged deep into the sea, its harsh light cutting through the darkness like a blade. The ocean floor rushed up to meet them, and Lake’s body hit the sand so hard the impact reverberated through his bones. A thick plume of debris exploded around him... sand, rock, and broken shell fragments spiraling outward like a shattered halo. His body thrashed violently as he fought to escape. Gills or not, he was drowning

  • Coming Out of the Deep    Chapter 153: Golden Eyes

Lake's POVI opened my eyes slowly, blinking against the darkness. It took me a second to remember where I was and that I must’ve fallen asleep. Sitting up, I rubbed my eyes and looked around the room.It was dark and thick, with the kind of silence that only comes with the late hours. Night had fallen completely, and I stretched, feeling the stiffness in my back and shoulders, then got to my feet with a quiet sigh. The switch was just by the door. I shuffled over and flicked it on, blinking again as the soft glow filled the room, and my stomach growled almost instantly, reminding me that I hadn’t eaten, like it didn’t want to remind me in the dark.I couldn’t believe I had slept for so long. It was just before five when Lux left, and now it was 11:30 p.m.One thing was sure: I wasn’t going anywhere tonight. I’d be spending the night here. I went through the house, turning on the rest of the lights.Reaching the kitchen, the space felt too wide as I headed straight to the fridge. I di
