He straddled me, his hips swirling in slow, maddening circles. His body was right there, pressing into mine, and I couldn’t escape it; I didn’t want to. His hands found mine and guided them to his chest, and when my palms touched his warm skin, I was gone. My pulse was a blur of frantic beats pounding in my ears, drowning out the crowd's cheers and whistles. With his face inches from mine, Alec leaned in. His breath ghosted over my lips, his smile, cocky, knowing, playful, and somehow tender all at once. “You okay there?” he asked with an amused tone, and I opened my mouth, desperate to say something—anything—but nothing came out. My throat was dry, my skin was on fire and my mind was completely blank. All I could do was stare at him, completely mesmerized by how his body moved against mine and that wicked smirk on his lips. Before I knew it, heat pooled low in my belly, spreading downward, and I instinctively clenched my thighs together to stop the throbbing that ignited between my legs, but it was too late as I dampened the soft leather.

A rush of excitement coursed through me as I stepped off the jet at Silverglate Airport. I couldn’t believe I was finally here, ready to start my varsity journey and embark on a new chapter of my life. Alec and I hurried to the curb, where our ride awaited us. As we got in the car, I could not help but feel both nervous and excited. This was the first time I was so far away from my family and the familiar comforts of home, but the excitement of all the new experiences that lay ahead quickly drew me out of it. As we began driving through the city, I realized it was even more beautiful than I had imagined, and there was a sense of freedom in the air. My cousin Alec was in his fourth and final year, and he told me that life was fast here. "Wow!" I marveled at how the city sparkled at night. It was one of its most striking features, and as someone from a small, quiet town, I found it captivating. It also made me understand why Alec almost failed his first year. Silverglate was synonymous with glitz and glam, and its appeal exceeded its physical appearance. It was a hub for the entertainment industry and home to some of the world's wealthiest individuals. I aspired to be a billionaire one day, so it was fitting that my journey to adulthood began here. I smiled at that, recalling how Lux said this was where we would make our first stories to tell our grandchildren. Lux and I were best friends, and our families were very close. Thinking of her, I pulled out my phone and turned it on to find three messages from her, all of which asked if I had arrived yet. "How long until we get to the Academy?" I asked Alec, and he said we were about 15 minutes away. I told Lux, and she lost it and blew up my phone. She started yelling at me about how I said I would arrive before her, so I explained that we were delayed at the airport. I sighed, sliding down the window as I ended the call, and then I heard Alec speak again, saying we were almost there before asking what I thought of the city. I told him it was beautiful, and we took in the magical atmosphere as we drove past billboards and marquees advertising the latest blockbuster movies and upcoming events. Suddenly, a massive sign bearing the name Silverglate Academy appeared in front of me, widening my eyes as I gazed at the largest and most beautiful university I had ever seen. I had seen it in pictures, but seeing it in person was an entirely different experience. Our transportation stopped, and guides wearing university emblems greeted us. Meanwhile, reporters buzzed around us, welcoming us and illuminating our surroundings with their cameras. Alec guided us through the halls, explaining that he wasn't staying on this side, as he wasn't a new student, and wanted to see me in my room first. The guides were okay with it, and we took the elevator to the floor where my room was. When we arrived, they showed me the code but did not press it; instead, they rang the bell because someone was already inside. The door opened after a moment, and Lux lost it when she saw me. She leaped into my arms, screaming, eliciting smiles from the guides, who had already formed an incorrect impression of us based on her reaction. People frequently assumed Lux and I were a couple; we pretended to be when she received unwanted attention, but that was where it ended, on pretense. I was gay, but only she and I knew that, as I hadn't had the balls to come out to anyone else yet. My luggage was brought in, and I again introduced her to Alec. She had met him before, but I was unsure if she remembered him. Alec left after we confirmed our plans, promising to catch up later. Lux said she wanted to shower, but the door opened, and Alec entered again, saying he had forgotten to ask about the party. “What party?” I asked, but Lux replied instead. "This party," she said, walking to the closet to retrieve a gift bag and hand it to me. She explained that the party was for first-year students and would begin in two hours. I knew they held one, but I had no idea it was scheduled for tonight. Usually, they hold it after the formal orientation. The bag contained an invitation, a T-shirt with my name, and a keychain. Alec asked again about our attendance, to which we responded in the affirmative. We would not miss it. I asked Alec if he was going, and he said yes. We agreed to meet there, and he left again. Lux asked, "Are you going to shower first?" I replied, "She could shower first." "This is going to be epic," I muttered as I walked to my closet to unpack my belongings. ---- TWO HOURS LATER "Wow," Lux said in amazement as we entered the club where the party was being held, taking in the pulsing lights and thumping beat of the music. The air was thick with excitement as students danced and mingled, their enthusiasm infectious. This institution went all out with its parties, booking the most prestigious clubs to host them. The atmosphere was electric as we made our way inside, the bass vibrating through our bodies as we spoke while moving toward the bar, where we ordered drinks and took in the scenery. “Come, let’s sit down!” Lux said, and we settled into our seats, turning and facing away from the bar and towards the dance floor. And just then, I felt a magnetic pull toward the entrance, as if someone was watching us. I looked up, and the hottest guy I had ever seen stood in the doorway. “Shit!” “What? What is it?” “I think I just found him.” “Who?” "The guy who yanked not only me out of the closet, but the hangers, shoe rack, and last season's wardrobe." ----–------- Author's Note Thank you for diving into this story with me! I wanted to give you a quick heads-up about one of our key characters, Kairos, who happens to be a merman. As a sea person, his world differs from ours, as is how he refers to specific concepts. He may use "mer terminology" when describing some objects, concepts, and experiences that might sound unfamiliar. But don’t worry, I will ensure you always know what he’s talking about. This choice is intended to enrich the story and draw you deeper into his point of view. I hope you enjoy discovering his world as much as I enjoy writing it! Happy reading! –-------------A YEAR LATERLake's POV Reaching the borders of Kairos’s kingdom, my stomach was a swarm of nerves as I gazed upon the gates of my mate’s home for the first time.To say I was nervous would’ve been a laughable understatement, because I was practically vibrating. This was Darian and Mira’s wedding, and not just any wedding, but a royal event of the decade, and the first thing I noticed was the sheer beauty of it all.Even from the outskirts, the kingdom was breathtaking. Ornate sea silk banners in gold and aquamarine flowed with the currents, tied to coral pillars that stretched up like towers.Strings of glowing pearl lanterns weaved through sea fans and swayed gently in the water, illuminating the path ahead. Schools of tiny bioluminescent fish darted through the decorations like living confetti, casting fleeting shadows across our skin. The gates were carved from pale, ivory coral and inlaid with sunstone and lapis, which glittered in the soft underwater light.Guarding them stood
Lake's POV When we arrived at Kairos’s place, construction filled the air... drills, hammers, and voices calling over the noise. For a moment, I just stood there, taking it all in.The back half of the house, the part torn apart by the sea’s surge, was still a mess. But it wasn’t just rubble anymore. There were signs of rebuilding... scaffolding, fresh timber, and workers moving with purpose.Since we weren't running away this time, Kairos and I properly took in the damage for the first time.A man in a navy hat and dusty boots came over, wiping sweat from his brow. He introduced himself, and Kairos and I introduced ourselves back to him. He was the foreman on-site, letting us know they’d already started laying the new foundation. “The place’ll be back to itself in no time.”Kairos thanked him, and I stepped forward. “We want the pool to stay the same,” I said. “No changes, and that matters to us.”I loved that pool. It was the coolest thing, and we made memories there. The foreman g
Lux's POVLooking at myself in the mirror one last time, I smoothed down the short, emerald green cocktail dress I’d picked out for the evening. It hugged my body just right… cute, playful, and a little daring.Paired with red heels, I worried for a second that I might be overdressed, but it was Reed who had made the dinner plans and sent a car for me, indicating that we were going to a high-end place, so I couldn’t risk feeling underdressed. Mom and Dad always said it was better to overdress than underdress.I rechecked the time, grabbed my clutch, and was about to leave the room when I heard the door creak open. Stepping out of the room, I squealed at the sight that greeted me.“Oh my God!” Lake and Kairos stood there, and before either of them could speak, I was running across the room. Lake met me halfway, and I threw myself into his arms, laughing through the sudden rush of joy that bubbled up in my chest.“You didn’t even say you were coming back." I was beyond happy. “Are you g
Kairos's POV We headed to the zoo, and I was excited, especially at the thought of finally seeing an elephant. Lake told me he never forgot things, like when we met.We drove through the quieter side of the city, my father taking in the sights and Lake pointing them out to us. My mate enjoyed showing us around, and I couldn't wait to show him around in the deep one day soon, too.Reed had never seen my home, only pictures he had me take for him because he couldn’t swim that far. I hoped it would be different for my mate, since his abilities weren’t given to him like Reed’s, but by the gods themselves. We reached the zoo's gates, and from the outside, it looked like a giant garden, with banners fluttering and families milling about with ice cream and maps. But it wasn’t until we stepped inside that I felt like I had landed in another world.Lake explained again that it was where surface creatures lived, creatures I’d never encountered beneath the waves. But even knowing that didn’t pr
Kairos's POVLake and I cleaned up after breakfast, deciding to help Lake’s mom before heading out to meet with my father. He arrived early in the morning, choosing to stay at a hotel instead of accepting Lake’s parents' invitation, and that alone gave me knots in my stomach. When we finished, we headed up and got ready. Lake’s parents were waiting downstairs as we descended the stairs and wished us luck.Sliding into the car, the drive to the hotel was initially quiet before Lake tapped his fingers against the steering wheel, humming softly to the radio. He smiled when our eyes met and told me we had done enough worrying when we woke up. We had. We’d had such a beautiful day yesterday that we managed to push away the thoughts of my father, but this morning they came crashing back.We learned he wasn’t alone. Reed’s father had arrived with him, which didn’t surprise either of us since my father knew little about this world; having someone like him around made things smoother. As we ne
Lake's POVKairos and I eventually left the business district. We rode out from the city in the late morning, the tall towers and bustling traffic slowly fading behind us as I took him to the surprise destination. It was time for him to have his first riding experience, and the concrete and glass were soon replaced by open skies and long stretches of green. His father wouldn’t arrive until the early hours of tomorrow, and I wanted us to make the most of our time together before that happened. Sitting around and worrying wasn’t going to help.I was terrified of the mer king after he tried to kill me, but my love for Kairos was worth taking a chance on, so I did it.It was the reason I hadn't gotten into detail with my parents about how he tried to kill me; I had just said he got angry and tried to drag Kairos to the deep with him.My parents would never forgive him if they knew he tried to kill me, and it wouldn’t matter what reasons he had. So I made sure Kairos would never mention th
