VENUS

The silence that followed Aaron’s words wasn’t silence at all.

It was suffocating. Crackling. The kind of silence that came right before the gun fired. Everyone in that boardroom knew it. Felt it. Their eyes darted between Caroline’s blanched face, Dorian’s shaking fists, and Aaron’s calm, predatory stillness.

And then, he moved.

Not loudly. Not dramatically. Just leaned back in his chair, one hand still tethering me, the other resting on the glass table. He didn’t raise his voice. He didn’t need to. Authority poured off him in waves that strangled the air.

“You have two options.”

The words landed like a verdict.

“One,” he continued, gaze slicing straight through Dorian, “you renounce your title. Step down. Leave this building with what little dignity you still have. Quietly.”

Caroline made a sound in her throat, sharp and furious. But Aaron didn’t spare her a glance. His attention was fixed solely on Dorian.

“Or,” Aaron said, voice steady as steel, “I involve the autho

VENUS The boardroom was still trembling with the echoes of applause when Aaron was swept up by a tide of stakeholders. Hands reached for him, voices overlapping, congratulations pouring in like a flood he endured with the same composure he wielded in war. Papers were thrust at him, questions murmured, promises whispered. I stayed tucked by his side at first, but his world was suddenly swarming with numbers, politics, logistics, things that weren’t mine to fix. I watched him, my storm in his element, the way he shifted from predator to ruler, charming and commanding in equal measure. But then my gaze caught on someone else. Connor. He stood by the far wall, leaning against the marble with his arms crossed, a permanent fixture of shadow and silence. No grin. No sarcastic quip tossed into the chaos. No cheeky wink my way like he always used to when Aaron bulldozed a room. Just… quiet. I saw it in his shoulders—the weight, the restraint. He was here, but he wasn’t him. And maybe b

VENUS Rosemary’s hands trembled in mine. For a moment, the world was just her and me—Caroline’s poison still ringing in my ears, the weight of that secret pressing hot against my chest. Her lips parted, and her whisper scraped out like a blade dragged against stone. “Not a word, Venus. Not now. Not here.” Her grip tightened, surprisingly strong. “This is not the time, nor the place. The boardroom will be blood enough without spilling this secret too.” I wanted to argue. To spit fire. To tell her Aaron deserved the truth, deserved to know exactly what Caroline had stolen from him. But Rosemary’s eyes—dark, fierce, tired from carrying too many ghosts—stopped me. Not now. And she was right. Because when we stepped into that boardroom, another kind of war was waiting. --- The room stretched wide, gleaming and merciless, a cathedral built for power. The long glass table glittered beneath the overhead lights, lined with men and women whose eyes sharpened the moment Aaron strode in

VENUS Two weeks. That’s how long it had been since I’d watched Martha’s body burn into ash and smoke, since I stood by that pit of fire with Gianna at my side and Aaron’s chest at my back, refusing to fall apart. Two weeks since I faced Dain across steel bars and chains and told him he deserved to rot. And five months since anyone had seen Gerald. That number was the one that clung. Five months of silence. To most, silence meant safety. To me? It meant he was breathing somewhere nearby. Gerald didn’t vanish. He burrowed. He blended. He bided his time until the world stopped looking for him—then he struck. I knew in my bones: he wasn’t gone. Not yet. One night, I whispered it to Aaron in the dark, my voice raw against his shoulder. He didn’t answer. Just held me tighter, lips pressing against my temple like he could erase my words. But his silence was an answer of its own. He was hiding something. Him, Connor, Colton—their clipped tones and closed-door meetings were too sharp, t

VENUS They burned her. The fire devoured what was left of Martha Sinclair until there was nothing but brittle fragments and smoke curling into the night sky. I stood still through it all, rigid, my fists clenched inside Aaron’s coat pockets as though the leather could hide how badly my hands shook. Gianna flanked me on one side, her quiet, steady strength a balm I didn’t ask for but needed all the same. Sabine was on the other, silent but fiercely present, her gaze fixed on the flames like she could will them to erase every scar Martha left behind. And Aaron—always Aaron—stood behind me, close enough that I could feel the heat of his chest at my back. Colton was here too, he might've disliked Martha but he was somewhat greatful to her for raising me, even though it was in her fucked up way. Connor lingered nearby, silent sentinel, his hand tightening and loosening on the glass jar he’d eventually fill with Martha’s ashes. The blaze hissed and cracked, but there were no prayers, n

VENUSI woke to silence. Not the cold, suffocating kind that had wrapped itself around me in that apartment. Not the silence of horror, of blood-soaked walls and words carved in cruelty. This one was softer. Heavy, yes but steady. The kind of silence that belonged to Aaron. My lashes fluttered open, the light dim, the room familiar, the study. My body felt like lead, but I wasn’t alone. The second I shifted, strong arms tightened around me. His scent hit first, dark and grounding, the only tether strong enough to drag me back from the places my mind wanted to wander.“You’re awake.”His voice was low, gravel threaded with relief, but also tension. Always tension. Aaron never truly let it go, not even when I was curled against him.I tilted my head slightly, enough to see his face. He was watching me, of course he was. Storm-dark eyes, jaw taut, like he hadn’t blinked since I drifted off. The faint lamplight cut across him, highlighting every edge of restraint.Connor and Colton weren’
