IVY.

The world made the decision to freeze. I was a desperate missile one minute shooting toward Sloan because I thought he was my only chance. After that I was a statue, completely terrified gazing at a scene that seemed to have been lifted from a cheesy romance book.

With wide shocked eyes Sloan stared at me. Across his shoulder the woman whom I called Ms. Liquid Starlight Dress turned Her astonishment swiftly turned into a frown with a slight furrow forming between impeccably defined eyebrows. As if I were an obnoxious bug disturbing her fine dining.

Bless his quick-witted enraged heart, Sloan pushed her away. Rather than violently more like a startled cat attempting to remove an unwanted strand of tinsel. He stumbled to his feet and untangled himself from her legs which to be honest appeared to have been sculpted by angels.

He was clearly at a loss for words. His jaw opened and closed like a fish out of water but he made no sound. I simply stood there and gazed. Now my painstak

SLOAN.It was a hazy walk back to the medical wing. There was still a sharp humming sensation inside of me from the cold hard rage I had let loose on Sophia but it was being subdued by another emotion. Fear. Its the kind of fear that makes your hands shake and your stomach knot. Ivy was the one I had to face. I had been given a name and some motivation by the conversation with Sophia but it had not helped me get ready for the challenging task of telling Ivy what had happened. I had to be honest with her about what had been taken away. the reality of what I was unable to shield her from. It felt impossible to hear the quiet click of the latch as I pushed open the door to her room. It felt like a fortress with the sterile white walls the quiet hum of the monitors and the smell of antiseptic. This is the only place in the world where I can let my guard down even for a brief moment. Ivy had woken. Leaning against the pillows she watched the door with a slight flicker of worry in the

  • Corrupt Temptation   CHAPTER 117: Lines of Fault

SLOAN The vigil was held. A brittle vessel adrift on a sea of cold consuming rage the relief that Ivy was awake was hollow. According to the doctor her memory loss was a disguised blessing which felt like a personal slight. I had to bear the weight of what had happened even though she didnt. It was me who had seen her lying on the ground unconscious and broken. It was me who felt the cold fear of her skin against mine. It was now my responsibility to ensure that those in charge made the payment. It hurt to put my hands around something else after they had just held hers in a tender desperate fear. Something worthy of the icy ruthless rage that had taken root in my spirit. Sophia was the sole suggestion the sole thread to pull. I moved down the hall my every step a controlled purposeful echo of my growing rage. The main halls gilded decor and mahogany paneling replaced the medical wings sterile white walls. The house was falsely silent beneath it I could hear a persistent annoying

  • Corrupt Temptation   Chapter 116: The Awakenings

SLOAN.There was a soft buzzing gray that had dissolved the world. A single overpowering feeling of fatigue replaced the cold leather of the chair the beeping monitor and the sterile white of the room. After what seemed like an eternity of fighting sleep I found out that the human body has its limitations. I briefly closed my eyes as my head sagged forward and my chin struck my chest. A whisper-soft sound drew me back from the edge. I had heard my name and the word for what seemed like an eternity. “Sloan?”I opened my eyes immediately. I felt confused for a moment my heart pounding frantically against my ribs. She was there when I glanced at the bed. She had her eyes open. They were open instead of glassy and pale as they had been.“Ivy.” I called. With aching and stiff limbs I leaped from the chair and knelt next to the bed, my hands above her like a mirage that would vanish if I touched her. “You’re awake. Thank God you're awake.”Her lips were chapped and dry. “My head hurts.”

  • Corrupt Temptation   CHAPTER 115: Watching over her

SLOAN.My entire world had been the bed in the sterile white room. The few feet of floor between her and the wall which I hadn't left in what seemed like a lifetime had become the entirety of my world. The chair was a permanent fixture and my restless body was causing its springs to creak. My tie was a faint recollection and my suit jacket was long gone. I was certain that the hollow circles under my eyes could be mistaken for a new zip code and my hair was in such a mess that I couldn't bring myself to straighten it out. The door was gently knocked on but I didnt even look. I knew who it was already. The staff was a parade of well-meaning people who saw me as a constant crisis that needed to be handled. A crisis that had a subtle hint of desperation and coffee. A maid whispered “Sir? I've brought a hot meal and a new shirt for you. You have not eaten any food.”With my thumb lightly tracing the back of Ivys hand I continued to stare at her. I whispered “Take it away” in a raspy vo

  • Corrupt Temptation   CHAPTER 114: A Toast in the Shadows

VICTOR.I owned a playground of possibilities, a glittering beauty of city lights beneath my penthouse office. Every blinking red and white . served as a silent reminder of the kingdom I had established and ruled from this peaceful opulent position. The only noise in the room was the soft clinking of ice in my glass as I swirled a century-old single malt and the hum of the city was like a faraway lullaby. The evening was suitable for a drink. Even a great night. I raised my glass and said “A toast to the empty room. To the chaotic beauty of a perfectly mishandled plan.” I sipped slowly and gratefully the amber liquid burning on my tongue. The large vicious dogs Sloans men had located us. It was expected that they would. My entire plan was based on the idea that he would discover us and then show up like the dependable jerk that he is. It was truly stunning. Though he is merely an instinctual being he believes he is very intelligent and strong. Additionally it is very simple to con

  • Corrupt Temptation   CHAPTER 113: The Storms Afterfall

Author's pov.The safe room was a harsh sterile environment. Sophia was being treated by a medic who was dressing a minor cut on her arm. The minor physical injury was a cost of the nights mayhem. Arthur could see the deeper wounds on Sophia's face which were her actual injuries. Her lips formed a thin white line and her eyes were vacant. A shadow of the lively person she usually was she sat on the edge of the cot. The springs on the bed creaked under Arthur's weight as he approached and took a seat beside her. After giving him a knowing glance the medic gathered his things and left. The ensuing silence was oppressive laden with the unsaid guilt that hung like a pall in the atmosphere. Arthur asked his voice softer than he meant to “Are you alright?”Gently he extended his hand to grasp hers. It was chilly. Sophia's eyes remained focused on the white impersonal wall across from him. “I’m doing okay. It's merely a scratch.”The calm mask she was wearing broke when she finally turne
