Isabella POV

The moon chamber looked exactly as it had on the night of my wedding ritual. The black obsidian floor. The wolf runes carved into the walls. The great round glass ceiling, open to the sky, with the full moon hanging in it like a silver coin.

But the beauty was gone. The runes glowed a sick purple. The air tasted like metal and old flowers. And in the center of the floor, drawn in thin black lines, was a circle as wide as a carriage, filled with tiny crescents.

I was lying in it.

  • Craved By My Husband's Best Friend    137. The End

Xavier POVFive years later, on the fourteenth of May, the Sterling garden was full of children. They ran everywhere. Under the long white tables and through the bed of crocuses and in wild, shrieking circles around the oldest maple. A small girl with dark hair and a gap in her front teeth sat on the lowest branch, ruling over a kingdom of cousins with a stern expression and a plastic crown that said BIRTHDAY QUEEN. A boy of about three, with James's grey eyes and Alina's wide smile, tried to climb up beside her and was repelled with a majestic wave."Jo," I called. "Be kind.""I am being kind, Papa." She did not turn her head. "I am being fair.""That is a different thing.""It is a better thing," said my daughter, and went back to governing.I stood on the terrace with a glass of lemonade and watched them, and I thought, not for the first time, that happiness is a very quiet sensation. I had expected it to be louder. I had expected trumpets. Instead it came in the form of a Tuesday

  • Craved By My Husband's Best Friend    136. The Best Thing

Marissa POV Ethan Harrison pleaded guilty to attempted murder in the second week of February. It did not take long. The security footage from the Sterling corridor, Dennis Hollis's sworn statement about the rented room on the east side, and a receipt from a hardware store for a pair of garden shears left very little room for argument. Hollis, who had spent months being frightened of the man who hired him, walked into the prosecutor's office on his own and sat down with a recorder and a cup of coffee and said, in a shaking voice, "I would like to be on the right side of this."The sentencing was held on a grey Thursday in a courtroom on the sixth floor. I sat in the second row in a soft navy dress, thirty three weeks pregnant, with Xavier on one side of me and Steve Fenwick on the other. Hailey sat directly behind us and had brought a thermos of tea and a pocketful of tissues. My mother sat beside her, upright as a candle, with her hands folded over her purse."You do not have to spea

Marissa POVThe baby shower was held on the first Saturday of January, in the glass sunroom at the Sterling house, and it was a pure, loud, sparkling riot.I was thirty one weeks along. I was the size of a small and extremely determined house. My feet had swollen into two soft little loaves, my back ached in three distinct places, and I had been informed by a kindly obstetrician named Dr. Ingrid Solheim that I was not allowed to run until after the birth, a pronouncement I had received in stony silence and Xavier in heartfelt relief. But I was happy. I was so happy that I kept forgetting to be afraid. The room was a garden of white and cream and pale gold. Naomi had designed the decorations, an arch of paper crescents hanging from the ceiling like a flock of silver moons. Elena had rendered a tiny three dimensional nursery that floated on a screen above the cake table. Eleanor sat in a wicker chair near the fireplace with a blanket on her knees and Tomas's violin in its case beside he

Xavier POVWe honeymooned in Prague, at my wife's insistence and my mother's request.Eleanor had asked us, quietly, the night before the wedding, to go and thank Tomas Verhoeven's daughter. I had assumed it would be a brief courtesy call. It became, instead, a week of narrow cobbled streets and church bells and warm yellow light on old stone, and an afternoon I will remember for the rest of my life.Katerina Verhoeven's workshop was a tiny room above a bakery in the Mala Strana quarter, full of pale curls of wood shavings and unfinished violins hanging from hooks like sleeping bats. She was a small, sturdy woman in her fifties with her father's gentle hands. When Marissa explained who we were, Katerina stood very still, then crossed the room and took Marissa's face between her palms."The woman from the letter," she said, in careful English. "The one with the crescent moon.""Eleanor," said Marissa."My father spoke of her until the end." Katerina's eyes were wet. "He said, I carved

Marissa POVI woke on the morning of my wedding to the smell of vanilla. It rose through the floorboards of the bridal suite in the Sterling guest wing, warm and sweet, curling beneath the door. I lay for a moment in the white bed with my eyes closed and my heart doing something unreasonable, and then I opened one eye.Hailey was standing at the foot of the bed holding a tray."Do not ask," she said. "The groom is not allowed to see you. But the groom has, according to Julian, been up since four o'clock in the kitchen, and the pastry chef from Le Petit Dessert has been in tears, and these are the result."On the tray sat a dozen vanilla cookies, each stamped with a tiny silver crescent. Beside them lay a folded note.Happy birthday, Zaika. Happy wedding day. I will be the man at the end of the aisle who looks like he has not slept. X.I laughed until I cried, and then I cried until I laughed, and then Hailey, who was supposed to be the calm one, sat down on the bed in her dressing gow

  • Craved By My Husband's Best Friend    132. I know

Marissa POV Planning a wedding, I discovered, is exactly like planning a building. There is a vision, a budget, a deadline and a large number of people who each believe they know better than the architect."The veil is too short," said Eleanor."The veil is perfect," said my mother."It stops at the shoulder.""It stops at the shoulder because the dress has a very beautiful back, Eleanor, and a very beautiful back should not be hidden.""A bride should have a long veil. It is a matter of principle.""A bride should be able to breathe, Josephine. It is a matter of oxygen."I stood on a velvet pedestal in a bridal boutique called Maison Ardent, wearing a column of ivory silk with a low scooped back and a hand stitched line of tiny silver crescents running down the hem, and watched two women in their sixties argue about tulle with the controlled ferocity of rival generals. The seamstress, a calm, grey haired woman with a pincushion on her wrist, had retreated to a corner and was eating

Marissa POVThe house was too quiet now that Ethan’s presence had been scrubbed from the entryway, but the silence didn't last long. A few hours after the mysterious courier vanished, the front door swung open for the only person who could match my level of chaos.Hailey burst in like a whirlwind,

Marissa POVI was the first to wake up. The room was deathly still, the only sound of the faint hum of the air conditioning. I felt the heavy and the weight of his arm draped across my waist, pinning me to the silk sheets. For a second, I let myself breathe in the scent of him, sandalwood and raw,

  • Craved By My Husband's Best Friend    2. Four Months?

Marissa POVI woke up to a cold, damp pillow. My face felt tight, my eyes swollen nearly shut from the "hot tears" that had slammed down my cheeks until I finally passed out from exhaustion. The house was deathly quiet....no sound of Ethan’s humming, no scent of morning coffee. Just the lingering g

  • Craved By My Husband's Best Friend    1. The Confession

Marissa POVI stood in the center of our pristine living room, the space I had spent the last two years turning into a sanctuary. Now, the silence felt like a predator. I was utterly bamboozled no, dumbfounded didn't even touch the edges of it. It felt as if the floor had suddenly liquefied, leavin
