Lauren, the daughter of Mr McCarthy, he is also Melissa's father.
They both have the same father, that's why lauren is being treated like trash and as a maid in the house because they believed she was born out of wedlock and she and her mother were not worthy to be in their family.
She knew of all these but didn't bother or try to leave because she knew they were the only ones that could help in paying for her mother's surgery.
Her mother had been on the sick bed, and her condition was getting worse every day, with lauren not being able to pay the surgery money.
She left the house late in the evening and went to the hospital her mum was admitted.
Even though she was treated like a maid there, she was allowed to leave the house whenever she wanted.
She was told that the doctor had asked of her, and she went straight to his office. She opened the door and greeted the doctor in charge, who quickly offered her a seat.
“I am glad you are here, I was about to tell the nurse in charge of your mother to call you” The doctor said and Lauren's heart skipped a beat while thinking of every worse thing that might have happened.
“Is there a problem?” She asked.
It felt like her heart was in her mouth as she waited patiently, staring at the doctor expecting him to say whatever was going on.
The way the doctor took time before speaking inputted more fear in her as she thought of one drastic thing, but she quickly discarded the thought and focused on the doctor.
“Not really, but there might be a problem if we don't act fast” the doctor finally spoke.
“Your mum's condition is getting worse, and we need money for her surgery,” the doctor said.
“We need to do it as soon as we can. otherwise, it might be too late” the doctor said, and Lauren bit her lips.
She knew she had nowhere to go and get the money or even borrow it.
She smiled and assured the doctor that she will work on it.
“You should do that quickly, please, so we can perform the surgery on her before it goes out of hand. Once it does, then surgery won't be able to solve the problem”
Lauren left his place and went to her mother's ward.
Her heart broke when she saw her mother, she looked lifeless. Lauren sighed and entered the ward, she sat beside her mother and helped rub her two hands so they could become warm.
A few minutes into that, she slept off, she was really tired, she barely had time to rest in the house as she was always working.
She woke up late the next day. She gasped when she checked the time and saw she had slept till the afternoon of the next day.
She stood up and rushed out of the hospital, and then she took a cab that drove her back home.
Inside the cab, several thoughts clouded her mind, and she thought of asking her father if he would give her the money. She knew he might rebuke her, but she thought of trying her best.
The cab dropped her, and she entered the house. She took a deep breath and walked in.
She gasped when she saw that it was the whole family that was there. She bit her lips and clenched her fist.
Fear and sweat covered her body. She had hoped to see him in private, to talk to him, and beg him if he could have a change of mind and help her.
She knew him being in the midst of the family having a meal with them would make it harder for her to ask him for what she wanted from him.
She stepped forward, and they all turned their attention to her when they saw her.
Melissa frowned when she saw her, she had always hated Lauren and never for once had she acted nice towards her.
She always felt like the lady might come one day and snatch away her father from her. And so she always made sure to inflict pain on Lauren at any chance she got.
Melissa had been looking for Lauren around the house before the meal so she could give her plenty of work, but when she didn't see her, she had to give someone else to do the work.
“What are you doing here staring at us like that?” One of the family asked.
“I am sorry for disturbing your meal, I just want to speak with father” Lauren said, mumbling the last word under her breath.
“Father?” Melissa asked and chuckled.
“You have no father here witch” Melissa half yelled.
She hated that Lauren had called him father, and she hated how that had sounded in her mouth.
She always imagined Lauren getting her father, and then she gets treated just like she treats Lauren, and those thoughts made her hate Lauren the more.
Mr McCarthy placed his hand on Melissa shoulder and urged Lauren to speak.
“Mother is dying, she needs surgery quickly and I need money to pay, I don't have any and I don't have anyone to run to, please help me” Lauren cried out.
She went on her knees and clasped her two hands together. Melissa scoffed and rolled her eyes, seeing Lauren's behaviour. As a pathetic and attention seeker own.
“How dare you come here to disturb us during our meals asking for money for your stupid mother's Surgery, she can die for all we care” one of the family member said and Melissa chuckled in satisfaction, she always loved the way they scolded Lauren every time.
“But I need the money. If I don't pay quickly for Mother's surgery, she might die” Lauren said.
“Who cares if she does? She can die for all we care” They said and scoffed.
“Leave here now” one of the family members yelled.
“So much guts to come here and ask my father for money, you look so pathetic” Melissa said, and laughed.
“I should make a video of this” She brought out her phone, but before she could start recording, Lauren rushed out of the place.
She was sobbing as she ran out of the house and boarded a cab back to the hospital. She went to her mother's ward and hugged her.
“Why? Why do they hate me so much?” Lauren Sobbed.
“They have too much money and helping me won't cost them anything, but they won't do it” Lauren mumbled.
“They always treat us like trash and will never consider us as part of the family. They just hate us,” Lauren said.
“I can't wait for you to be well, mum, so I can leave that house”
She raised her head and stared at her mum whose eyes were closed.
Lauren sighed and held her mother's hand.
“I don't even have half the money we were asked to bring” Lauren said.
She started rubbing her mother's hand again. She always did that every time she went there, believing it made her mum warm, and she also loved doing it.
She sighed and rested her head on the bed, thinking of what to do.
ALEX'S OFFICE
Alex sat on his wheel chair focused on his work, his face cold as usual, his sea blue eyeball moved along with the laptop as he operated on it.
He never got distracted when working, his mind was always on work when he was in his office. He always made sure he dropped anything that would divide his mind when he was at work but there was something hovering in his mind that won't leave no matter how he tried to get rid of those thoughts.
He was also worried about why he hadn't gotten any reply from the McCarthy family. His mind wasn't in what he was doing, so he dropped it and wheeled to the window.
He could see the outside company from there, so he watched people walk around and also do different things.
As much as he hated to admit it, he was really worried, he had the feeling that his proposal could get rejected.
He called Dan, and the guy rushed to his office.
“You called for me” Dan said.
“I haven't gotten a reply from the proposal I ask you to drop. What's happening?” Alex asked.
“I also haven't seen a reply from them, sir,” Dan said.
Alex frowned while staring outside. His mind was far away, but it felt like he was watching everyone.
“What should I do, sir?” Dan asked.
“Just wait till when they send a reply, regardless, the wedding date is still on, and the wedding will go on” Alex said.
“But, what if it is rejected?” Dan asked, and Alex glared at him with his usual cold gaze.
“I am sorry, sir, I just wanted to know what to do if the proposal is rejected.” Dan rushed his words and rushed out of Alex office.
Alex sighed, knowing that thought crossed his mind, but he discarded it, knowing he could never be rejected
Lauren cleaned her tears and checked the time. She saw it was leading to the afternoon, and she knew the family would have gone to take care of their own businesses. So she left the hospital and boarded a cab back home with the intention of meeting Mrs McCarthy. Since she wasn't in the family meeting, she thought she could talk to her to see if she would help her.The cab stopped in front of the house, and Lauren ran inside. She stumbled on the maids. It looked like she was the one they had been waiting for. They stood at the kitchen door waiting and glaring at her. It seemed like they had planned what they would do to her. “Do you think you are some special kid all because you are an illegitimate child of McCarthy?” One of them asked. “What are you talking about? Lauren asked. “You refused to do your appointed work. Instead, you chose to run around skipping work.” Another maid said. “I was busy, and I always do my work, I never ask you to do them for me,” Lauren said and passed
Alex woke up to the sound of soft knocking on his door. Ariana, his personal maid entered when he replied, his eyes still stuck on the newspaper in his hand. She helped him shower and dress, careful not to step on him throughout the activity. It was the same every day, yet something felt unusual. He had only three days to bring up a wife to the investors.By the time he arrived in the dinning room, a delicious feast of breakfast had been set, but he didn't have the appetite for one. So he asked for a cup of black coffee instead. The name Melissa McCarthy kept ringing in his head like some sort of mantra.“There's still nothing on her, boss.” Alex looked up to see Dan, his right-hand man, standing over him.He remained quiet for some time, just sipping on his drink. But Dan could notice how his hand tightened on the mug.“What is taking them so long? Even a rejection should have gotten here by now. What games are they playing?” Alex muttered.Dan stood stiff, not responding. He didn't
Alex's eyes burned into the young woman as she found her way to the front of the now silent courtroom. The soft yet, deliberate click of her heels was the only sound that could be heard, a complete contrast to the wild storm that brewed inside Alex. His right-hand man, Dan, tensed beside him, his lips held in a deep scowl.“And who might you be?” Alex finally asked as she stood directly in front of him.“Lauren. Melissa's half sister,” she said simply. “The wedding contract was sent to Melissa, so why are you standing here in her place?” Alex asked coldly.“Melissa has no interest whatsoever in you. To her, you're just another man in the queue dying to get a taste of her love,” she said as she looked at him. “But you'll never be able to get pass that queue.” She glanced at the wheelchair he sat on.Alex raised a brow in question. He still didn't comprehend why she was standing there in front of him, offering herself willingly.Lauren was obviously very different from her sister. She d
”Well, well…” Jake started, his lips stretched into a taunting smirk. “You couldn't get the palace princess, so you went for the dirty palace maid instead.”Alex tensed as he watched his evil uncle and nephew walk out of the shadows, his body immediately going rigid, his mask of indifference now in place. So this is your replacement for Melissa…even for you…” Jake eyed Lauren. “…this is too low,” He clicked his tongue. Dan stepped forward in front of them, a deadly glare pointed at the two bullies.“You should take your leave now,” Dan demanded.“What will you do?” Jake smirked.Dan narrowed his eyes at him, before he pulled out a metallic black object, just enough for the man to see it. Something like fear flashed on Jake's face, but he quickly concealed it, smiling. “No need to get all macho on me. I'm only here to congratulate my cousin on his new marriage.”Dan stepped back a bit, but still stood defensively, ready to attack if Jake tried anything threatening.“Did you really thi
The mansion was strangely quiet except for the soft buzz from the TV. It felt like a place of secrets for Lauren. Her eyes roamed all the corners of the room but, yet, she couldn't find anything that made the large room homely. Her heart beat wildly against her chest. The weight from the earlier discussion she had with Alex's cousin still haunted her. She should have stood back. Alex's business wasn't hers. She wanted this marriage to go smoothly and be invisible to most of the members of the family. But she had just dug her grave. Now, Jake would make sure she regretted ever coming to this side of the world. The door finally creaked open to reveal Alex, wheeling himself in. His dark eyes immediately landed on her before he glanced away from her.Lauren felt a strange heat, flow through her body. Her heart tugged with a strange desire, but she quickly dismissed it.“You're still here,” Alex spoke up, as he went towards the window that had a nice view of the landscape outside. His back
Lauren couldn’t sleep that night. She kept tossing and turning on the unfamiliar mattress, despite how comfortable it was. Earlier that evening, two maids had suddenly approached her after the heated argument she had with Alex. He had wheeled himself to his study while she sat down on the couch, looking stupendous. They told her Alex had instructed them to take her to her room. She trailed behind the maids, passing different rooms until they stopped at a room with large double doors. The master’s bedroom. The room had a king sized bed and mosaic paintings as dark as the owner. Before Lauren could utter a word, some men came in rolling 2 queen sized beds. She watched as they rolled the king sized bed out and put the two beds at either side of the room. They didn’t say a word, just quietly setting everything up with precise efficiency before slipping out. The whole day, Alex didn’t speak to her.He didn’t offer any explanation about the sleeping arrangements and she didn’t ask either.
Lauren woke up to the sound of rustling. She plopped her hands down on the bed, her sleepy eyes moving towards the source of the noise. She saw Alex, rummaging through his massive wardrobe. Her gaze trailed down his body, his broad shoulders flexed beneath his loose shirt. The two top buttons where opened and Lauren gulped.Despite being in a wheelchair, he looked way more healthier that the average men. His hands moved swiftly and efficiently. And that alone sparked some kind of feelings in her. Their argument from the previous night had long been forgotten. His eyes snapped to hers and she turned away, blushing slightly from being caught ogling him."Where are you going?" Her voice was raspy, sleep clinging to her words.Alex glanced at her for a moment before returning his attention to his tie. ‘’Work.’’Lauren eyes widened. She bolted upright, the sheets slipping off her body as she swung off the bed. ‘’Work?’’ She repeated, stunned. ‘’What about me?’’‘’You?’’ He arched a brow, s
Alex was enveloped with grave silence after Lauren walked out.She didn’t slam the door. Didn’t look angry too. Just nodded and walked out.And somehow, that was way worse.Alex stared at the muffin that was still untouched on his desk and he shook his head. He didn’t want it anymore. The rest of the day passed by in a blur of back-to back meetings and files that needed to be worked on. But she didn’t return. And he was starting to feel restless from how eerily quiet the room was.It wasn’t until the sun dipped below the horizon that Alex got up and exited his office. He found Lauren plopped on a couch in the guest lounge sulking. He cleared his throat trying to get her attention. ‘’Let’s go.’’ She looked at him dejectedly but still nodded, following behind him. Alex kept distancing himself from Lauren. But that only made Lauren cling to him more. She kept going with him to work, same routine everyday. And for some reason, Alex didn’t mind. ‘’Are you ready?’’ Alex asked as the ca
Lauren sat propped up in her hospital bed, the sterile hum of machines a faint backdrop to the storm in her heart. Her body ached—broken ribs, bandaged feet, a swollen face—but the pain of Alex’s betrayal seared deeper into her nerves. The memory of Melissa, naked in his bed, smirking like she had won a game, was a wound that she knew will never heal. Alex had chosen her half-sister, shattering every vow. She clutched the thin blanket, tears drying into resolve. I’ll make them pay.Suddenly, the door creaked open, and Tom Devon, the stranger who’d found her collapsed outside Alex’s mansion, days ago, walked in.Lauren noticed as his tailored suit and sharp jawline screamed wealth, but his eyes held a warmth that disarmed her. “You’re awake,” he said, voice low, steady. “I’m sorry for barging in but I thought I’d check on you before I head out.”Lauren glanced at him, wary. “Why do you care? You don’t even know me.” Her tone was sharp, but exhaustion softened the edges. She turned awa
Lauren lay in the hospital bed, her body surging with intense pain, her heart a graveyard. The image of Melissa, naked in Alex’s bed, smirking like she had just won the battle, was a wound that wouldn’t stop aching and bleeding. It seemed like it would never heal. She’d fought through kidnappers, stumbled through woods, her love for Alex had become her downfall. It had become ash.Suddenly, her phone buzzed on the bedside table, waking her from her deep thoughts, a blocked number flashing. She grabbed it, her hands shaking as bandages pulled at her raw skin.“Who is this?” she demanded, voice hoarse and shaky, cracked from screaming into the void of her captivity.A distorted voice answered, cold and mocking. “Lauren, you seem to be tougher than we even imagined, now I see why Alex is so infatuated with you. But it's too bad. Your Alex, your husband? He’s already moved on.”Her phone pinged, an incoming notification. A video loaded: Melissa in Alex’s office, hours ago, her manicured h
The screen lit up—a grainy feed, Lauren tied to a chair, face swollen, blood crusting her lip. A masked figure stood behind her, voice distorted. “Alex, you want her back? Pay up. Everything—accounts, deals. Or I promise you'll never see her again. Not even her dead body.”Lauren’s eyes, defiant but scared, met the camera. “Alex, don’t,” she rasped, before a fist struck her jaw, silencing her. The video cut to black.Alex’s hands shook, rage boiling. “They’re torturing her,” he said, voice breaking. “Find them, Carter. I’ll give them anything, but I want their heads. I want my Lauren back.”“We’re tracing the upload,” Carter said, already dialing. “It’s encrypted, but we’ll crack it.”Alex stared at the blank screen, Lauren’s battered face burned into him. He’d failed her, let her doubt him, let her run. But he loved her, more than the contract, more than his pride. “I’m coming, Lauren,” he whispered, voice fierce. “Hold on.”His phone buzzed again—an unknown number. A new video loade
Alex maneuvered his wheelchair through the quiet house, the hum of the wheels on hardwood the only sound. The clock on the mantle ticked past 11:30 PM, each second a needle in his gut. Lauren's absence gnawed at him—her fierce exit after their fight, clutching that damn photo and note, replayed in his mind. "I need the truth," she'd said, voice breaking, before storming out. He'd let her go, thinking she'd cool off, and come back. But the house felt wrong, too still, her jacket gone from the hook, one of his cars no longer in the drive.“Lauren?” he called, voice rough, rolling into the kitchen. No one answered. The study door was ajar, his laptop open, the light flashing, the sticky note with Dan’s login glaring—DKane—temp123. She’d been digging. His chest tightened. That text she’d shown him, the one about her mom’s death, had spooked her so much. “Warehouse, midnight…the proof he did it”. He’d told her it was a trap, but her eyes, wild with doubt, hadn’t listened. He grabbed his
Lauren's car rattled through the industrial district, the dashboard clock ticking toward twelve midnight. Her hands continued to shake on the wheel, the USB drive and her childhood camp photo stuffed in her jacket, haunted her thoughts every second. That text “Warehouse, midnight. Proof he did it. Come alone” burned in her brain like acid, her mom’s frail hospital smile haunting her. Alex’s voice, sharp and desperate, rang out: “It’s a trap.” Melissa’s sneer countered: “Him or the truth.” She’d stormed out, choosing answers over both. She had to find out what was going on.She needed to clear Alex's name…secretly. The warehouse squatted under a buzzing floodlight, steel walls scarred with rust. She parked a block away, heart slamming against her ribcage. Her phone had no signal. She crept to the door, half-open, dim light leaking out. “I’m here,” she called, voice tight, but the fear lingered. “Show me the proof.”A rough laugh answered. “Right on time, Lauren.” A man stepped forwar
Lauren stumbled into the empty hallway, the office door slamming shut behind her, the childhood photo and note gripped between her fingers. “If you leave now, you’re breaking more than a contract—you’re breaking me”—cut deeper than she’d expected, his cold edge laced with something raw, but the note’s accusation drowned it out. Her tears spilled, her breath jagged, as she pressed against the wall, whispering, “What am I supposed to do now? Believe him, or run?” The photo, her eight-year-old self in a pink designer camp t-shirt, stared back, and a memory roared to life, fierce and unrelenting.Flashback****Rain lashed the woods, the summer camp a distant murmur beneath the howl of a flash flood. An eight-year-old girl, scrawny and drenched, slogged through mud, her borrowed t-shirt—Melissa’s, bright pink with the cam’s logo—plastered to her skin. She’d taken it after Melissa sneered at her faded clothes, unaware it would mark her as her evil sister“Hey!” she yelled, her voice swallo
“You’re staring,” Alex said, his voice low and sharp, cutting through the morning quiet of the dining room. He sat at the head of the shiny table, his wheelchair positioned like a throne, his dark eyes flicking up from his tablet to meet the blue's of Lauren. She froze, her coffee mug halfway to her lips, heat creeping up her cheeks. A small smile threatened to stretch on her lips. “I’m not staring,” she said, too quickly, setting the mug down with a clink. “I’m just… thinking, you know.”“About?” His tone was cold, but a faint smirk tugged at his lips, the kind that made her heart stutter. It was the same smirk he’d worn last night, when he’d admitted he wanted to try love—for her. She wanted to giggle at the mere thought of it.Lauren shifted in her chair, her fingers twisting the hem of her sweater. “Us,” she admitted, her voice softer. “What we said last night. Making this work. It’s… a lot to take in.”His smirk faded, his gaze sharpening, assessing her like a deal he wasn’t sure
Lauren suddenly sat up on the couch, her body stiff, her heart raw from last night. Alex’s kiss clung to her like a scratch she couldn’t itch—fierce, desperate, and far too real. She’d unraveled in his arms, seeking anything to lessen the pain that followed her since her mother's death, only to pull back with a shaky, ‘This doesn’t change a thing.’Now, guilt continued to gnaw at her. She’d married him for money, a cold deal to pay for her mother’s surgery. Love wasn’t in the contract, it was never in the contract. So why did her chest tighten so much at the thought of him?The house felt empty. Alex and her were the only people staying there. She hadn't seen or heard from Dan, Alex's right hand man, since her mother's death. Alex didn't even seem affected by his absence. Her phone sat on the coffee table, its silence heavy. The threatening text, “ Stop, or you’ll end up like your useless mother,” burned at the back of her mind. She hadn’t told Alex. He was her husband on paper, not h
Lauren stood at the passage of Alex’s house, her travel bag slung over her shoulder, the weight of her grief heavier than the load itself. The modern glass-and-steel facade loomed before her, cold and unwelcoming, a stark contrast to the warmth of her mother’s small apartment. Her chest ached so painfully she urged to clutch them in her hand, her eyes still raw from tears that wouldn’t stop. The threatening text from the unknown number burned in her mind—Stop, or you’ll end up like your mother—but it was her mother’s still face that haunted her the most. Who would want to hurt a woman like that? She wanted to believe it was all a dream, but everyday, it hot more realer than the last Coming here, to Alex’s, felt like surrender, but she had no choice. The door opened quietly before she could knock, and Alex was there, his wheelchair framed in the doorway, his face unreadable, as usual. “You made it,” he said, his voice softer than she had expected.“Don’t make a mountain out of it,” s
