Chapter 19

Two days later, as the crisp morning sun began to pierce through the thick mountain mist surrounding the Frostwell estate, the heavy fog holding Lydia captive began to recede.

Inside the quiet hospital suite, the vitals monitor suddenly hummed with a change in rhythm. The flat, steady pulse picked up speed, the line spiking as neural activity flooded back into her conscious mind. Lydia’s toes twitched beneath the blankets, and a soft, shallow breath expanded her bruised chest. For the first time in seven days, her mind was no longer retreating into survival instincts; it was reaching outward, taking in the environment around her.

She felt the cool linen sheets against her skin, the sharp scent of medicinal herbs, and above all else—an overwhelming, comforting blanket of heat wrapping around her right hand. The scent of rain, dark mahogany, and winter pine filled her senses, driving away the horrific memories of stagnant water and cold cellar iron.

At the central monitoring station just outside the room, Dr. Vance stood up abruptly from his chair, his eyes fixed on the telemetry screens.

“Her brain waves are shifting into active awareness,” Vance murmured to a attending nurse, his heart racing. He snatched his tactical comms device from his belt, pressing the command channel button immediately.

“Alpha,” Vance spoke into the receiver, his tone crisp and urgent. “Lady Lydia is coming out of the coma. Her vitals are elevating—she’s waking up right now.”

In the grand packhouse two miles away, Asher was mid-sentence, reviewing a stack of service records with Gamma Liam at his mahogany desk. The second Vance’s voice crackled through the radio, Asher froze. The heavy leather chair screeched against the hardwood as he vaulted to his feet, abandoning the files entirely.

Without a word, he bolted from the office, his raw Alpha speed blurring as he tore through the packhouse halls and out into the morning air. He didn’t wait for a vehicle; he surged across the manicured grounds in a furious sprint, his chest heaving, his wolf clawing at his ribs in absolute, frantic anticipation.

By the time he pushed through the double doors of the trauma wing, his heart was hammering louder than a war drum. He slowed his rapid pace to a quiet, deliberate tread as he approached her door, forcing his chest to rise and fall evenly so his overwhelming aura wouldn’t agitate her fragile state.

He pushed the door open softly and stepped inside.

Lydia’s head was tilted on the pillow. Her long, dark eyelashes were fluttering against her high cheekbones, fighting the heavy residual fatigue lingering in her muscles. A faint, low whimpering sound caught in her throat as the bright sunlight stung her sensitive eyes.

“Easy, little one... easy,” Asher breathed, his voice dropping to a low, velvety murmur that instantly anchored her.

He crossed the room in three long strides, dropping to his knees beside the bed. His large, calloused hand immediately engulfed her small, pale fingers, pouring a steady, radiant wave of golden mate energy directly into her bloodstream.

Lydia’s entire body shivered as the magic rippled over her skin, washing away the cold ache in her bones. Slowly, carefully, her emerald-green eyes fluttered open, struggling to focus against the glare until they locked squarely onto the tall, dark-haired male kneeling at her side.

She took in the deep shadows beneath his eyes, the rough stubble along his hard jaw, and the intense, agonizingly soft blue gaze staring back at her with a devotion so deep it took her breath away.

“Asher...” her voice was barely a raspy whisper, dry and fragile as fallen leaves, but to his ears, it was the sweetest sound in the universe.

A shuddering breath escaped his lips, a single tear slipping down his cheek as he brought her hand up to his mouth, pressing his lips flush against her knuckles. “I’m here, Lydia,” he rasped, his thumb brushing tenderly over her cheek. “You’re at Frostwell. You’re safe. I’ve got you.”

Lydia’s emerald eyes remained locked on Asher, but the soft relief in her expression slowly began to fracture. The haze of the coma dissolved completely, leaving behind a stark, brutal clarity. The warmth of the room faded beneath the sudden, suffocating weight of her memories.

Flashes hit her in rapid, violent bursts—the icy stench of the damp wine cellar, the heavy metallic rattle of silver chains against stone, and the rough, cruel hands of the rogues tearing at her body. Three endless days of torment burned through her mind: the crushing blows, the agonizing pain, and the absolute horror of being violated while bound and helpless. She could still hear their mocking laughs echoing in the dark, still feel the phantom weight pinning her down against the cold concrete.

Her breath hitched in a sharp, terrified gasp. The colour drained instantly from her face, leaving her pale as porcelain.

A violent tremor wracked her petite frame. Instinctively, she flinched, trying to shrink away as panic seized her chest. Her heart raced out of control on the hospital monitors, the rapid, erratic beeping filling the silent room. Tears welled in her green eyes, spilling over her lashes in hot, frantic streams down her bruised cheeks.

“No... please...” she choked out, her voice breaking into a ragged, heart-wrenching sob. She curled slightly inward, her small hands coming up to cover her face as her body re-experienced the unbearable trauma of those three days.

Asher felt the sheer agony crashing through the mate bond like a wave of acid. His heart shattered into a thousand jagged pieces, every sob escaping her throat twisting like a blade in his chest. He immediately eased his physical posture, suppressing his massive Alpha aura entirely so he wouldn’t overwhelm her fragile state. He didn’t force her into a tight embrace, keeping his hands visible and hovering close with soft, trembling gentleness.

“Lydia, look at me,” Asher pleaded softly, his voice thick with uncontainable grief and fierce, protective tenderness. “You’re safe. They can never touch you again. I killed them, little one. They are dead.”

He gently extended his fingers, allowing tiny, soothing golden sparks of mate energy to brush against the edge of her wrist without pinning or restraining her.

Recognizing the pure, untainted warmth of his soul, Lydia wept harder, her tears soaking into the white linens. The horrific dark memories fought against the comforting reality of his presence, but the mate bond offered a sanctuary her shattered spirit desperately needed. Slowly, through her shuddering sobs, her small hand reached out through the darkness, her bruised fingers clinging tightly to Asher’s wrist as if he were her only lifeline in a drowning world.

  • Crown of Frost and Gold   Chapter 52

The horn of the northern gate sounded three long, clear notes that echoed through the snow-capped gorges of the Frozen Spine, signaling a triumphant return.Down in the main courtyard, hundreds of pack members from Frostwell, Howler, and Ironwood had gathered along the stone ramparts. As the heavy iron gates swung wide, a dark shadow burst through the pine treeline at blistering speed. Zane bounded across the frosty cobblestones in his majestic wolf form, his dark coat dusted with snow and his brilliant blue eyes blazing with fierce, untamed energy. He leaped onto the central stone dais, skidding to a halt before shifting seamlessly back into his human form. His chest heaved with deep, steady breaths, sweat glistening against his brow in the crisp mountain air, but he stood tall, unyielding and proud.Beta Silas stepped forward, holding an ornate silver pocket watch in his gloved hand. He clicked it shut with a sharp snap, his amber eyes locking onto the young prince before a rare, br

  • Crown of Frost and Gold   Chapter 51

The frosted boughs of the ancient pine forest creaked under the weight of an early autumn snowfall, dusting the high trails of the Frozen Spine in crisp white. High on the Sentinel’s Crag—the highest overlook in the Frostwell territory—fourteen-year-old Zane Frost stood with his boots planted firmly on the stone, his breath rising in silver plumes against the icy morning air.He wore the dark leather tunic of the northern vanguard, trimmed with grey wolf fur, and his sharp blue eyes—strikingly clear, just like his father’s—were fixed on the horizon where the first pink and gold rays of dawn were breaking through the clouds.Behind him, the heavy snow crunched under a familiar, authoritative step. Alpha Asher Frost walked out onto the stone ledge, his broad shoulders draped in the dark, heavy mantle of the sovereign Alpha. Time had added silver strands to his dark hair at the temples, but his presence was as commanding and formidable as ever.Asher stopped beside his son, looking down

  • Crown of Frost and Gold   Chapter 50

Ten years after the fall of the Silver Crest Dominion, the Whispering Ridge stood not as a barrier of blood and ash, but as the golden crown of a thriving empire. Where war horns had once echoed through frozen gorges, merchant caravans now sounded silver bells, traveling along stone-paved highways that linked the Frostwell territory, the Howler pack, and the Ironwood realm into an unbreakable trinity of peace.High upon the eastern battlements of the Frostwell stronghold, Alpha Asher Frost stood with his broad arm wrapped securely around Luna Lydia. Time had only deepened the majestic aura surrounding the Alpha pair. The fine lines around Asher’s icy blue eyes spoke not of stress or sleepless siege nights, but of a decade spent watching his people flourish. Beside him, Lydia remained the radiant pulse of the kingdom, her sovereign grace and sharp mind keeping the alliance anchored in unwavering justice. Beneath their skin, the golden threads of their mate bond burned as bright and vib

The amber sunlight bled into deep indigo along the jagged peaks of the Frozen Spine as dusk settled over the Moon Grove. Torches flickered along the stone perimeter, casting long, dancing shadows across the festival grounds where laughter, music, and the heavy scent of roasted meats filled the crisp mountain air.Silas stood near the edge of the stone terrace, his fingers loosely wrapped around a horn of spiced mead, though he hadn’t taken a sip in ten minutes. Beside him, Vanya was leaning against the stone balustrade, watching the young wolves dance around the central bonfire. But as a cool mountain draft swept up from the lower gorge, bringing with it a faint, unnatural scent—burnt copper and damp ash—Silas’s posture shifted in an instant. His amber eyes narrowed, his spine straightening like a drawn bowstring.Vanya didn’t miss it. She didn’t ask what was wrong; she simply set her cup down on the stone ledge, her gray eyes instantly scanning the treeline below the eastern gate.“W

  • Crown of Frost and Gold   Chapter 48

The heavy oak doors of the lower corridors gave way to a flood of golden mid-morning sunlight as Silas and Vanya stepped out into the bustling central courtyard. The Solstice festival was in full, glorious swing. Lively northern fiddles chimed through the crisp air, mingled with the booming laughter of visiting warriors, the clinking of pewter mugs, and the rich, savory aroma of spiced roasted meats roasting over open stone hearths. For the first time in years, Beta Silas Black walked into a crowd without a ledger in hand or a scowl of intense vigilance locked onto his brow. Beside him, Captain Vanya had tossed her dark traveling cloak over one shoulder, her storm-gray eyes gleaming as she took in the vibrant energy of the Frostwell grounds.High on the dais, Alpha Asher was leaning back in his grand carved seat, his arm draped securely over Lydia’s waist as young Zane sat nearby, enthusiastically describing a practice maneuver to Alpha Mason. The moment Asher’s sharp blue eyes caught

  • Crown of Frost and Gold   Chapter 47

Dawn had not yet broken over the Frozen Spine when the grandfather clock in the corner of the lower map room chimed five times. The subterranean chamber was cold, smelling of old parchment, iron ink, and beeswax, illuminated only by a pair of heavy brass oil lamps casting long shadows across the central oak table.Silas sat at the head of the table, his dark hair neatly combed back, wearing a crisp linen shirt beneath a dark leather vest. Spread out before him were the grand topographic scrolls of the northern provinces. He had arrived at four-thirty, unable to pretend that sleep was ever going to come after their midnight meeting in the courtyard. The heavy oak door swung open precisely on the fifth chime.Captain Vanya stepped through the threshold, shedding her dark traveling mantle to reveal a sleek, form-fitting tunic of Ironwood slate gray. Her dark hair was tightly braided, her storm-gray eyes sharp and fully alert despite the ungodly hour. In her hand, she carried a tightly bo
