Calculated Tenderness

Vesperian’s knot finally started to deflate, but he didn’t pull out right away. He stayed draped over me, heavy and warm, his breath slow against the back of my neck. I lay there catching my breath, body still trembling from the aftershocks, the draining magic humming contentedly under my skin.

“You’re not rushing off this time,” I muttered, voice rough.

He hummed low in his throat. “Not yet.”

After a few more minutes, he finally eased back and slipped free. I hissed at the sudden gush of slick and seed that leaked out of me. Before I could even try to move, his arms slid under me. He lifted me like I weighed nothing.

“What are you doing?” I asked, stiffening in his hold.

“Bath,” he said simply. “You’re a mess.”

I wanted to snap at him, tell him to put me down, but my limbs felt like water. He carried me across the chamber into the attached bathing room. Steam already rose from the large tub, servants must have prepared it while we were... occupied.

He lowered me into the hot water carefully. I sank in with a groan as the heat soothed my sore muscles. Vesperian rolled up his sleeves and knelt beside the tub. He picked up a soft cloth and started washing me.

I stared at him. “You don’t have to do this yourself. You’re the king.”

“I know what I have to do,” he replied, running the cloth gently over my shoulders, then down my arms. His touch was surprisingly careful, tracing the bruises he’d left on my hips without pressing too hard.

I closed my eyes for a second, then forced them open again. “This is just so I can take more later, right? Keep your breeding vessel functional?”

He didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he lifted one of my legs out of the water and washed it slowly, thumbs pressing into the tight muscles of my calf. “You took me hard twice in one day. Your body needs care.”

A bitter laugh escaped me. “Care? From you? After everything you just did?”

His golden eyes met mine. “Yes.”

He moved the cloth across my chest, over my sensitive nipples, then lower. I bit my lip when he cleaned between my legs, gentle despite how thoroughly he’d wrecked me earlier. The contrast made something ache in my chest.

“Why are you being like this?” I whispered. “In the throne room you made it clear I’m just a tool. Now you’re playing nursemaid?”

Vesperian set the cloth aside and reached for a small jar of salve. “Turn around. Let me see your back.”

I hesitated, then shifted in the tub. He scooped some salve onto his fingers and started applying it to the marks on my shoulders and neck. His fingers moved in slow circles, working the ointment into my skin with a patience I never expected from him.

“I need you functional,” he said quietly, echoing my earlier words back at me. But his hands lingered on my waist, thumbs stroking just above the curve of my ass. “Strong enough to carry my child. Healthy enough to survive the pregnancy.”

I twisted to look at him over my shoulder. “That’s all this is? Making sure your experiment doesn’t break too soon?”

He paused, fingers still on my skin. For a moment, something flickered in his expression, something almost soft. “You’re more resilient than the others. Your body handles me better than I expected.”

“Others,” I repeated, voice tight. “Like the cousins you killed?”

His jaw tightened but he didn’t pull away. Instead, he kept applying the salve, moving down to the bruises on my thighs. “They weren’t strong enough. You are.”

The gentleness of his touch warred with his words. I wanted to hate it. I wanted to shove him away and scream. But the way he cared for me, the quiet focus in his eyes... it cracked something inside my chest. Part of me wanted to believe this was real. That the king who hunted my kind could actually see me as more than a cursed womb.

“Stop,” I said suddenly, voice cracking. “Don’t do this. Don’t act like you care. It’s worse than when you’re rough.”

Vesperian’s hand stilled. He looked at me for a long moment, golden eyes searching my face. “I’m not pretending, Eli. I need this to work. For both of us.”

He helped me out of the tub and dried me with a thick towel, his movements still careful. When he was done, he wrapped it around my shoulders and guided me back to the bed. Fresh sheets had already been changed by servants.

I sat on the edge, watching him. “You’re staying longer than last time. Why?”

He sat beside me, close enough that our thighs touched. “Because the bond is pulling. And because I want to make sure you’re alright before I return to my duties.”

My heart stuttered. I looked away, staring at the floor. “I hate how good that sounds. I shouldn’t want you near me after what you’ve done. After what you are.”

“But you do,” he said softly. Not a question.

I didn’t answer. The soul resonance hummed warmly in my chest, stronger now. Even without the heat driving me, I felt it, the pull toward him. The strange comfort of his presence.

Vesperian stood eventually, pulling his robes back into place. “Rest. I’ll send food. And I’ll be back tonight.”

As he walked toward the door, I felt it again. That tug. Even as he left the room, I could sense exactly where he was going, down the corridor, turning left toward the main hall. My body wanted to follow. My mind screamed at me to stop.

I curled up on the bed, pulling the blankets tight around me. The places he’d touched with salve felt warm. Cared for.

This was dangerous. I was starting to crave him outside the heat. Not just his knot, not just the power I stole from him, but him. His voice. His hands. His complicated presence.

I pressed my face into the pillow and groaned. “What the hell is wrong with me?”

The bond answered with a soft, insistent pull toward wherever he was in the palace right now. And no matter how hard I tried to ignore it, part of me already waited for him to come back.

The royal wing felt smaller with every passing hour."You will not leave these chambers without a full escort of six guards and either myself or Lord Caelum," Vesperian said, voice leaving no room for argument. He stood by the window, arms crossed, watching servants and mages work around the room. "No more garden walks. No more slipping away. Kieran’s forces are too close."I sat on the edge of the bed, one hand resting on my heavy, rounded belly. The child shifted restlessly, as if he could feel the walls closing in too. "So I’m not just a prisoner anymore. I’m a treasure locked in a vault."Vesperian crossed to me in three strides. He cupped my face with both hands, thumbs stroking my cheeks. "You are everything. And I will not lose you to my brother’s madness." His eyes flicked down to my belly. "Either of you."Mages moved through the room, placing glowing runes on the doorframes and windows. I couldn’t stop shaking.Vesperian’s arms stayed locked around me, one hand splayed wide over my rounded belly while the other stroked slow, soothing lines down my back. His heartbeat thumped steady against my ear, but I could feel how hard he was working to keep it that way. The vision still burned behind my eyes, fire, blood, our son standing in the ruins like a god of destruction.“Eli,” he murmured, voice low and rough. “Tell me what you saw. All of it.”I pressed my face harder into his neck, breathing in his cedar-and-smoke scent like it could chase the nightmare away. The child kicked restlessly inside me, reacting to my terror. “It was bad. Really bad.”His hand tightened on my belly. “I felt it through the bond. Like someone drove a blade through your chest. Talk to me, little Omega. I can’t protect you from what I don’t understand.”I pulled back just enough to look at him. His golden eyes were intense, glowing with that fierce protectiveness that always made my chest ache.

Four months. My belly was heavy now, round and tight, making every step feel like I was carrying the weight of the entire empire. The golden glow under my skin had deepened, pulsing in time with the child’s movements. I stood by the window, one hand supporting the underside of my stomach, feeling him shift and press against my ribs.“You’re getting so strong,” I whispered, rubbing slow circles. A powerful kick answered, making me wince. Protective instinct surged through me so fiercely my vision blurred for a second. No one was going to hurt him. Not Kieran. Not the court. Not even the power I kept stealing from his father. The door opened behind me.Vesperian stepped in, his movements a fraction slower than they used to be. I felt it through the bond before I even saw him, the quiet exhaustion he tried so hard to hide.“You should be resting,” he said, voice rough but warm. He crossed to me and wrapped his arms around me from behind, hands automatically settling over my belly. The ch

“Where were you?”Vesperian’s voice cut through the chamber like a whip. He stood in the middle of the room, arms crossed, golden eyes locked on me with predatory focus. The door clicked shut behind me, trapping us together.I swallowed hard, one hand instinctively moving to my rounded belly. “I told you. I needed air. The royal wing feels like a cage sometimes.”He took a slow step forward. “Don’t lie to me, Eli. I felt you through the bond. You were somewhere you shouldn’t be. Again.” His gaze dropped to the faint glow still visible on my collarbone. “You’re getting bolder. Stronger. More independent. I want to know why.”My heart hammered. The child kicked sharply, reacting to the rising tension between us. “You want me healthy for the baby, don’t you? I’m just… stretching my legs. Testing how far this new body of mine can go.”Vesperian closed the distance in two strides. He caught my chin, forcing my face up. “Testing how far you can push me, more like. I’ve given you everything.

I waited until the corridor outside went quiet. Vesperian had been pulled away hours ago for urgent meetings about Kieran’s approaching army. The bond tugged at me, faint but persistent, letting me know he was still deep in the war room. Good. That gave me time.My belly felt heavier today, the round swell making every movement more noticeable. But my senses were sharper than ever. I could hear the guards two halls away breathing, smell the faint oil on their weapons.
