"You're not Michael."

Victor stared at the woman across the visitation table.

She didn't look offended. She simply placed a leather folder in front of her and folded her hands over it.

"No. I'm Diane Cross. I'm covering for your usual attorney this morning."

"Where is he?"

"Family emergency."

Victor's eyes remained fixed on her.

"Michael doesn't send substitutes without warning me."

"These things happen, Mr. Moretti."

"Not to Michael."

Diane held his gaze for a moment before opening the folder.

Regina knew something was different the moment she entered the dining room, breakfast had already been served. The cook had arranged everything neatly across the long table, while the nanny moved quietly through the adjoining hallway, checking the nursery and speaking softly with one of the household staff.Regina's attention went straight to the small black box sitting beside her usual place at the table. She stopped.Alexander was already seated across from it, reading something on his tablet. He looked up.“Good morning.”Regina pointed toward the box.“What is that?”Alexander glanced at it.“Your breakfast.”She gave him a look.“That is definitely not breakfast.”His mouth curved.“Then I suppose you'll have to open it.”She approached the table slowly. The box was small, elegant, and wrapped with a narrow ivory ribbon. There was no name on it. No note. Nothing that gave away what was inside.Regina looked at Alexander.“You did this?”She pulled the ribbon loose. The lid lifted

Elliot Shaw walked through the correctional facility gates with a temporary identification badge clipped neatly to his jacket. He didn't look nervous, and he didn't look excited either. Elliot simply looked like a professional beginning another assignment. A corrections officer checked his identification, compared it with the authorization on the tablet, then opened the inner door.“Behavioral health?”“Yes.”“Administrative wing is through there. Someone from the department should meet you.”“Thank you.”The door closed behind him. He continued down the corridor, keeping his pace steady while taking in his surroundings without appearing to study them. The movement of officers, the placement of cameras, the controlled doors and the steady rhythm of scheduled activity all registered in his mind.At the behavioral health office, a woman named Dr. Miriam Cole looked up from her desk when he approached.“Elliot Shaw?”“Yes.”She stood and offered her hand.“Miriam Cole. I supervise behavi

Marcus chose the location carefully. The hotel lounge was quiet in the late afternoon, occupied mostly by business travelers who kept their conversations low and their attention on their phones. Nothing about the room suggested that anything important was happening. Elliot Shaw arrived exactly on time. He wore a charcoal suit without a tie and carried a slim leather folder beneath one arm. He paused near the entrance, scanned the room once, then walked toward Marcus. "Mr. Hale?" Marcus stood. "Elliot?" They shook hands. "Please." Elliot took the seat opposite him. Marcus waited until the waiter had placed two glasses of water on the table before speaking. "I understand you applied to Moretti Correctional Facility several months ago." "I did." "You weren't selected." "No." "Would you still be interested in the position if another opening became available?" Elliot studied him. "That depends on the position." "Behavioral health assessment." Elliot's expression changed sl

Marcus began with a search. Not through criminal databases or private security networks, but through professional directories, employment records, and recruitment platforms where qualified people left ordinary trails behind them. He needed someone who could enter a correctional facility without looking like they had been sent there. Someone whose résumé would explain his presence before anyone thought to question it. Marcus leaned closer to his screen as another profile disappeared from the list. Too much disciplinary history. Next, a former security consultant, too suspicious. He kept going. The person had to satisfy several requirements at once. The right qualification. A clean professional history. Experience around correctional environments. A personality that wouldn't attract unnecessary attention. Most importantly, the person needed to be comfortable listening. Marcus opened another database. The search became narrower. Behavioral health specialists, clinical psychologists, co

Regina woke up with her mouth tasting like chalk. She blinked at the ceiling. 2:14AM glowed red on the clock. The room was dark except for the little nightlight Alexander had plugged in last week "just in case." Her stomach made a sound. Not a normal hungry sound. It was a specific sound. She thought of pickles and ice cream altogether. Regina groaned and rolled over. Alexander was asleep beside her, one arm thrown over her stomach like he did every night now. His face was relaxed in a way it never was during the day. "Babe," she whispered. He didn’t move. "Alexander." Nothing. She sighed and tried to get up by herself. The moment her feet hit the floor, his eyes snapped open. "What’s wrong?" He was already sitting up, hand on her arm. "Baby? Pain?" "No. No pain." Regina smiled, tired. "I’m just hungry." "Okay. I’ll make you something." He was reaching for his phone already. "What do you want?" Regina hesitated. "Pickles and vanilla ice cream together." Alexande
