The private jet soared over the snow-capped peaks of the Rockies.. The air inside the cabin felt really thin. Elena sat across from Julian in a leather armchair. A glass of champagne sat on the mahogany table between them. For two hours they had been playing a high-stakes game of "Truth or Dare" without the dares. Julian had a file on her—names of her childhood pets, her GPA from design school, her favorite poet. "You are really thorough, " Elena said. Her voice sounded tight. "Do you do background checks on all the women you date? Or am I special?" Julian didn't look up from his laptop. "I don't date Elena. I get interested in people.. When I'm interested I do my research." "I am not something you acquire, " Elena snapped. "In the eyes of the public you are the woman who tamed the Vane beast " Julian said. He finally closed his laptop. He leaned forward, his gaze boring into hers. "To my brother you are the woman making me human. To Penelope you are a threat to the family's image. If you slip up once—if you forget that I'm allergic to shellfish or that I spent three years in London—she will ruin everything." Elena leaned back, crossing her arms. "Fine. Let's talk about you then. You said you looked like a monster after the video.. You didn't apologize. You waited five years until you needed a merger. That's not a conscience, Julian. That's a calculation." The cabin lights flickered as the plane hit turbulence. Julian's hand shot out steadying her glass. His fingers brushed hers—steady and strangely grounding. He didn't pull away immediately. "The world sees what it wants to see, " he said. His voice dropped to a vibration that thrummed in her chest. "Five years ago I was under a lot of pressure to prove I was as tough as my father. I chose the target to prove it on. I can't change Elena's past Elena. I can only control the present." "Fasten your seatbelts " the pilot's voice crackled over the intercom. "We're beginning our descent into Aspen." The "Vane Cabin" was a glass-and-timber palace perched on a cliff. Snow fell in silent flakes coating the world in a peaceful layer. As they entered the foyer the smell of cedar and expensive vanilla greeted them. Silas and Penelope were already there draped in cashmere sipping mulled wine by a fireplace. "There they are!" Silas beamed, pulling Elena into a hug. "The talked-about couple in New York. I have to say, Elena seeing Jules actually leave his office before midnight is a miracle only you could perform." "Hes been very... Attentive " Elena lied, forcing a smile. Penelope stepped forward, her eyes scanning Elena. "It's charming. Truly. Although Julian I was surprised to hear you're staying in the West Wing. It's so... Intimate. Especially for a couple that recently reconnected." Julian didn't miss a beat. He slid his arm around Elena's waist pulling her close. The heat of his body was startling against the mountain chill. "We've wasted time apart, Penelope. I don't intend to waste any more." He led Elena toward the staircase. "If you'll excuse us, it's been a flight. We'll see you at dinner." The moment they reached the suite and the heavy oak door clicked shut Elena spun out of his grip. "You're enjoying this " she accused, gesturing to the room. It was a masterpiece of luxury: a stone fireplace, panoramic views of the valley and a massive king-sized bed covered in white throws. "I'm performing, " Julian said, shedding his overcoat. ". If you want your firm to survive I suggest you do the same. Penelope has already checked the guest list for the Aspen club. She's looking for holes in our story." "I can't sleep in that bed with you, " Elena whispered. Julian stopped mid-stride turning to look at her. The firelight played across his face making him look less like a CEO and like something ancient. "Don't be a martyr, Elena. The bed is big enough that we won't have to touch. Besides, the walls here are thick. The staff talks. If the maid sees the pillows on the floor tomorrow morning the story breaks." He walked toward the bathroom pausing at the door. "Take the side. I'll be out in ten minutes." Dinner was a game of warfare. Penelope interrogated them on everything from their " date" to their plans for the future. Elena held her own drawing on her years of ghostwriting experience. By the time they returned to the suite Elena was exhausted. She changed into her modest silk pajamas in the bathroom. When she emerged Julian was already in bed propped up against the headboard with a tablet. He wore a pair of black pajama pants. His chest was broad, marked by a scar across his ribs. Elena climbed into the side sticking to the edge of the mattress. The silence was deafening, broken by the crackle of the dying fire. "The scar " she said softly. "Where is it from?" Julian didn't look up. "A reminder that I'm not invincible. A car accident, ten years ago. My father was driving." "I'm sorry, " she murmured. "Don't be. It's the thing he never gave me that stuck." He turned off the tablet. Slide down under the covers. "Go to sleep Elena. We have the hike at dawn." Elena closed her eyes. Sleep wouldn't come. She was aware of the man inches from her—the scent of him, the steady rhythm of his breathing. Hours passed. The fire faded to embers. Elena had finally drifted into a sleep when a muffled sound startled her awake. It was a whimper. She turned her head. Julian was tossing his brow furrowed in sweat. He was trapped in a nightmare, his hands gripping the sheets. "No, " he muttered, his voice thick with vulnerability. "Not her. Anything. Her." Elena hesitated, reached out her hand hovering over his shoulder. "Julian? Julian woke up." As her fingers touched his skin his eyes snapped open. In the light they weren't cold or slate-blue—they were wide with raw terror. Before she could react his hand shot out grabbing her wrist and pulling her toward him. "Elena?" he gasped, his breath hot against her face. "It was a dream " she whispered, her heart racing. He didn't let go. His gaze searched hers and for a heartbeat the billionaire vanished. There was a man who looked broken. He leaned on his forehead resting against hers. "Don't leave, " he rasped. The wasn't a nightmare. It was the fact that for the time, in five years Elena didn't want to pull away. Then the door handle turned. "Julian? Elena?" Silas's voice called out from the hallway. "The alarm system is tripping I think there's—" The door swung open. Silas stood there frozen as his eyes landed on his brother pinned against the wedding planner their faces inches apart. "Oh " Silas whispered, his face turning pale. "I... I think I just realized why the cameras are outside."Chapter 122: The Manhattan Re-alignmentThe wood fire in the library was crackling, the only sound competing with the heavy rain hitting the big windows of the villa. The room was a space with dark wood shelves, old leather books and comfy velvet armchairs but it felt tense, like a war room.Julian stood by the fireplace with a glass of scotch in his hand. He wasn't drinking it. He wore a black sweater and his big frame looked strong and alert. His gray eyes reflected the flickering flames staring out into the dark valley. His business empire was secure. He was still on high alert.Elena sat at the oak desk typing away on the computer. She had a charcoal shawl wrapped around her and a raw quartz pendant hung still against her neck. On her hand a simple silver band caught the warm light of the fire as she worked on some encrypted files from Thomas Vance's device."Thomas wasn't just talking to Geneva, " Elena said, her voice clear and calm. She worked her magic on the files uncoveri
Chapter 121: The Foundations of BetrayalThe heavy iron vault door fully opened with a mechanical sound. This let in a wave of filtered air into the damp stone hallway. Inside the server towers made a pitched humming noise. It sounded like the steady heartbeat of a trapped animal.Thomas Vance stood in front of Terminal 04. His hands stopped moving over the keyboard. He was Baron Hendrick Vance's nephew. Thomas had been the logistics coordinator for the estate for five years. He had worked with the Vane framework for a time. Julian had become the chairman. Thomas had been there before that. He was a careful person. Thomas had managed the estate's transit lists with accuracy. Now Thomas looked different. His face turned pale under the lights. His eyes moved quickly to the monitor. The VALE_09 decoy files had just finished a deletion process.Julian entered the room first. He was very tall. Blocked the exit. His presence made the air in the vault feel tight. Thomas had trouble breathing
Chapter 120: The Ridge SentinelThe storm over the Hudson Valley was really bad at midnight. It tore through the pine trees that lined the steep road to the ridge. The armored Escalade drove through the storm, its windows getting hit with rain as it made its way up the final mountain turns. After the corporate wars in Brussels and the problems in the French Riviera, going back to their private place felt more like a military deployment than coming home.Julian sat in the dark back seat, his big body straight and giving off a lot of energy. His dark shirt was open at the neck. His jaw was set in a hard line. His gray eyes kept looking at the estate's security dashboard. His big hand was on Elena's back holding her close to him. This showed that he was in charge of her safety as they entered their borders, which had been compromised.Elena had her high-security command unit on her lap. Its blue light shone on her face. She had a quartz pendant around her neck and a silver band on her ha
Chapter 119: The Domestic GhostThe bad smell of burned electronics went away as the armored SUV drove away from the Nice airfield. Outside the rain had finally caught up with the Mediterranean coast making the flashing blue lights of the emergency vehicles look like long blurry lines against the dark glass. In the back of the SUV it was very quiet. Elena sat with her laptop on her knees typing with a careful pace that she always used. The rough quartz pendant around her neck did not move against her collarbone. The silver ring on her finger shone under the vehicle's white lights.Julian sat next to Elena looking strong and in charge. He had his arm around her pulling her close to him with a grip that showed he was protecting her. His gray eyes were fixed on the screen watching as the shadow cartel's money was being taken away."The money transfer is going smoothly, " Elena said, her voice clear and sharp. "The VALE_09 system has taken all the regime's hidden money. Every single franc
Chapter 118: The Biometric LockoutThe inside of Hangar 4 was an empty space made of corrugated steel. It smelled like fuel for airplanes, hydraulic fluid and electronics that were working hard. In the middle of the floor there was a jet with no company name on it. The jet was black and medium sized. Its engines were not making any noise. A small unit was humming and making the ground vibrate.Under the jet's wing a temporary medical station was set up. It had computers that were showing a strong yellow light. This light was making shadows on the jet's body.Julian walked past the pieces of the side door. He was really big. Blocked the whole exit. His jaw was tight with anger. His gray eyes were fixed on something in front of him. He did not look at the guns that were lying around the room. Just being there he made the air feel thick and hard to breathe.Elena was standing next to him. She was wearing a leather coat that was a little open. Her fingers were moving quickly on the comput
Chapter 117: The Hangar BreachThe plane landed at the Nice-Côte d'Azur airport in the middle of the night. The Mediterranean coastline was dark. The lights from the coast were shining bright. The Gulfstream plane touched down on the runway with a lot of force making the people inside feel like they were being pushed back into their seats.Julian did not wait for the stairs to come out of the plane. Soon as the door opened he started walking down feeling the warm air of the French Riviera on his face. He was not wearing his coat. The tie and the top button of his shirt was open. His eyes were cold and angry. He looked very powerful as he walked out onto the open space.Elena followed him, her long black coat flying around her legs as she walked. Her face was serious and strong and the stone pendant around her neck was shining in the light of the cars that were waiting for them. There were three black cars with armor given to them by Marcus and his team."The people guarding the hangar
Chapter 116: The Riviera VectorThe Gulfstreams engines were really loud as the plane took off from the runway at Brussels-Abelag. It was like a roar that just got louder and louder. The plane went up into the air fast and the sky was all rainy and stormy. There was no time to relax after what happ
Chapter 115: The Eviction MandateThe room inside the grand maritime chamber of the Palais de Justice had changed. It was no longer quiet and calculating. Now it was a place of panic. The light coming through the stained-glass skylight was darker and longer casting shadows across the empty benches.
Chapter 107: The Southern TerminalThe night air in Miami's Biscayne Bay was heavy and humid. It rolled across the veranda of the Mandarin Oriental suite. The neon skyline of downtown Miami was mirrored in the waters of the bay. This was a change from the glass tower they had left behind in Brickel
Chapter 106: The Sealed PerimeterThe elevator shaft in the Brickell tower made a groaning sound as the emergency back-up generators started working. They hum-clicked to life with a mechanical shudder. The main digital display panels inside the elevator were not working. Instead there was an eerie
