FAZER LOGINChapter 3: The High Altitude Trap
The private jet soared over the snow-capped peaks of the Rockies.. The air inside the cabin felt really thin. Elena sat across from Julian in a leather armchair. A glass of champagne sat on the mahogany table between them. For two hours they had been playing a high-stakes game of "Truth or Dare" without the dares. Julian had a file on her—names of her childhood pets, her GPA from design school, her favorite poet. "You are really thorough, " Elena said. Her voice sounded tight. "Do you do background checks on all the women you date? Or am I special?" Julian didn't look up from his laptop. "I don't date Elena. I get interested in people.. When I'm interested I do my research." "I am not something you acquire, " Elena snapped. "In the eyes of the public you are the woman who tamed the Vane beast " Julian said. He finally closed his laptop. He leaned forward, his gaze boring into hers. "To my brother you are the woman making me human. To Penelope you are a threat to the family's image. If you slip up once—if you forget that I'm allergic to shellfish or that I spent three years in London—she will ruin everything." Elena leaned back, crossing her arms. "Fine. Let's talk about you then. You said you looked like a monster after the video.. You didn't apologize. You waited five years until you needed a merger. That's not a conscience, Julian. That's a calculation." The cabin lights flickered as the plane hit turbulence. Julian's hand shot out steadying her glass. His fingers brushed hers—steady and strangely grounding. He didn't pull away immediately. "The world sees what it wants to see, " he said. His voice dropped to a vibration that thrummed in her chest. "Five years ago I was under a lot of pressure to prove I was as tough as my father. I chose the target to prove it on. I can't change Elena's past Elena. I can only control the present." "Fasten your seatbelts " the pilot's voice crackled over the intercom. "We're beginning our descent into Aspen." The "Vane Cabin" was a glass-and-timber palace perched on a cliff. Snow fell in silent flakes coating the world in a peaceful layer. As they entered the foyer the smell of cedar and expensive vanilla greeted them. Silas and Penelope were already there draped in cashmere sipping mulled wine by a fireplace. "There they are!" Silas beamed, pulling Elena into a hug. "The talked-about couple in New York. I have to say, Elena seeing Jules actually leave his office before midnight is a miracle only you could perform." "Hes been very... Attentive " Elena lied, forcing a smile. Penelope stepped forward, her eyes scanning Elena. "It's charming. Truly. Although Julian I was surprised to hear you're staying in the West Wing. It's so... Intimate. Especially for a couple that recently reconnected." Julian didn't miss a beat. He slid his arm around Elena's waist pulling her close. The heat of his body was startling against the mountain chill. "We've wasted time apart, Penelope. I don't intend to waste any more." He led Elena toward the staircase. "If you'll excuse us, it's been a flight. We'll see you at dinner." The moment they reached the suite and the heavy oak door clicked shut Elena spun out of his grip. "You're enjoying this " she accused, gesturing to the room. It was a masterpiece of luxury: a stone fireplace, panoramic views of the valley and a massive king-sized bed covered in white throws. "I'm performing, " Julian said, shedding his overcoat. ". If you want your firm to survive I suggest you do the same. Penelope has already checked the guest list for the Aspen club. She's looking for holes in our story." "I can't sleep in that bed with you, " Elena whispered. Julian stopped mid-stride turning to look at her. The firelight played across his face making him look less like a CEO and like something ancient. "Don't be a martyr, Elena. The bed is big enough that we won't have to touch. Besides, the walls here are thick. The staff talks. If the maid sees the pillows on the floor tomorrow morning the story breaks." He walked toward the bathroom pausing at the door. "Take the side. I'll be out in ten minutes." Dinner was a game of warfare. Penelope interrogated them on everything from their " date" to their plans for the future. Elena held her own drawing on her years of ghostwriting experience. By the time they returned to the suite Elena was exhausted. She changed into her modest silk pajamas in the bathroom. When she emerged Julian was already in bed propped up against the headboard with a tablet. He wore a pair of black pajama pants. His chest was broad, marked by a scar across his ribs. Elena climbed into the side sticking to the edge of the mattress. The silence was deafening, broken by the crackle of the dying fire. "The scar " she said softly. "Where is it from?" Julian didn't look up. "A reminder that I'm not invincible. A car accident, ten years ago. My father was driving." "I'm sorry, " she murmured. "Don't be. It's the thing he never gave me that stuck." He turned off the tablet. Slide down under the covers. "Go to sleep Elena. We have the hike at dawn." Elena closed her eyes. Sleep wouldn't come. She was aware of the man inches from her—the scent of him, the steady rhythm of his breathing. Hours passed. The fire faded to embers. Elena had finally drifted into a sleep when a muffled sound startled her awake. It was a whimper. She turned her head. Julian was tossing his brow furrowed in sweat. He was trapped in a nightmare, his hands gripping the sheets. "No, " he muttered, his voice thick with vulnerability. "Not her. Anything. Her." Elena hesitated, reached out her hand hovering over his shoulder. "Julian? Julian woke up." As her fingers touched his skin his eyes snapped open. In the light they weren't cold or slate-blue—they were wide with raw terror. Before she could react his hand shot out grabbing her wrist and pulling her toward him. "Elena?" he gasped, his breath hot against her face. "It was a dream " she whispered, her heart racing. He didn't let go. His gaze searched hers and for a heartbeat the billionaire vanished. There was a man who looked broken. He leaned on his forehead resting against hers. "Don't leave, " he rasped. The wasn't a nightmare. It was the fact that for the time, in five years Elena didn't want to pull away. Then the door handle turned. "Julian? Elena?" Silas's voice called out from the hallway. "The alarm system is tripping I think there's—" The door swung open. Silas stood there frozen as his eyes landed on his brother pinned against the wedding planner their faces inches apart. "Oh " Silas whispered, his face turning pale. "I... I think I just realized why the cameras are outside."Chapter 126: The Sovereign SkyThe double doors of the meeting room closed behind Harold Vance and his team of lawyers, the sound echoing through the huge room like a final decision. The eighty-fifth floor was quiet now with no frantic movements from the old people in charge, just the calm power of the new group. The morning sun finally came out from behind the mist in Manhattan casting beams of light across the shiny black table reflecting off the glass walls like a new beginning.Julian stood by the windows, his long coat thrown over a chair. His big frame was outlined against the city waking up below his shoulders strong and proud. The big battles in the world and the secret computer attacks were over; the accounts were settled, but his gray eyes were still focused, his attention shifting from defense to total control. He did not look out at the city for long. His gaze went back to the room focusing entirely on Elena.Elena sat at the head of the meeting table with a charcoal scarf
Chapter 125: The Sovereign VaultThe elevator went up fast through Vane Tower but it did not shake. The air inside the elevator felt thin because it was moving quickly. The floor numbers on the wall were changing fast. 60, 70, 80. Julian was in control.Julian stood in the middle of the elevator, his frame casting a big shadow on the steel walls. His black coat was open showing his chest. His gray eyes were fixed on the screen looking cold and serious. He had his hand around Elena's waist holding her close to him. It was clear that Julian was in charge of the tower, the registry and Elena.Elena had her fingers on her phone looking at the screen. The blue light from the phone made her face look sharp. The quartz pendant around her neck was still. The silver band on her hand was moving a little as she worked on the defensive perimeter."Marcuss team has gotten into the server room " Elena said, her voice. Sharp. She swiped her finger across the screen looking at the information from th
Chapter 124: The Citadel GatesThe tires of the Escalade screeched on the wet concrete of the Teterboro tarmac. The Gulfstream’s stairs had not even fully lowered yet. The rain in New York was a drizzle. It turned the skyline into glowing monoliths against the pre-dawn sky.Julian led the way down the steps. His movements were smooth and full of energy. His black cashmere overcoat was blown by the wind.. His big frame stayed upright. He was like a shield against the elements. The moment Elena reached the step his big arm wrapped around her waist. He lifted her over the pooling water. He held her close to his side. Marcus held the door of the vehicle open.Inside the SUV it was not quiet and luxurious like the jet. It was like a command center. Three tactical monitors were on the partition wall. They showed real-time security feeds from Vane Tower’s garage to the penthouse.Elena put her mobile command unit into the central dashboard cradle. She linked her VALE_09 engine to the vehicle
Chapter 123: The Manhattan ReturnThe airport at the base of the Hudson Valley was really dark and scary with rain pouring down on the armored cars as they arrived. The tires were kicking up a lot of water, which was catching the lights from the airport. The storm was even worse here, making a lot of noise as it blew through the valley. In the middle of the airport the Gulfstream plane was waiting, its engines already running and making a lot of noise.Julian got out of the car first. He was not using an umbrella, a big black coat to keep him dry. He looked very serious like he was in charge of everything. He turned around. Helped Elena out of the car pulling her close to him so she would not get wet. They walked across the airport together with Julian shielding her from the rain.Elena was holding her phone tightly trying to keep it dry under her coat. She was wearing a necklace that felt heavy around her neck but it made her feel safe after what they had just been through. When they
Chapter 122: The Manhattan Re-alignmentThe wood fire in the library was crackling, the only sound competing with the heavy rain hitting the big windows of the villa. The room was a space with dark wood shelves, old leather books and comfy velvet armchairs but it felt tense, like a war room.Julian stood by the fireplace with a glass of scotch in his hand. He wasn't drinking it. He wore a black sweater and his big frame looked strong and alert. His gray eyes reflected the flickering flames staring out into the dark valley. His business empire was secure. He was still on high alert.Elena sat at the oak desk typing away on the computer. She had a charcoal shawl wrapped around her and a raw quartz pendant hung still against her neck. On her hand a simple silver band caught the warm light of the fire as she worked on some encrypted files from Thomas Vance's device."Thomas wasn't just talking to Geneva, " Elena said, her voice clear and calm. She worked her magic on the files uncoveri
Chapter 121: The Foundations of BetrayalThe heavy iron vault door fully opened with a mechanical sound. This let in a wave of filtered air into the damp stone hallway. Inside the server towers made a pitched humming noise. It sounded like the steady heartbeat of a trapped animal.Thomas Vance stood in front of Terminal 04. His hands stopped moving over the keyboard. He was Baron Hendrick Vance's nephew. Thomas had been the logistics coordinator for the estate for five years. He had worked with the Vane framework for a time. Julian had become the chairman. Thomas had been there before that. He was a careful person. Thomas had managed the estate's transit lists with accuracy. Now Thomas looked different. His face turned pale under the lights. His eyes moved quickly to the monitor. The VALE_09 decoy files had just finished a deletion process.Julian entered the room first. He was very tall. Blocked the exit. His presence made the air in the vault feel tight. Thomas had trouble breathing
Chapter 119: The Domestic GhostThe bad smell of burned electronics went away as the armored SUV drove away from the Nice airfield. Outside the rain had finally caught up with the Mediterranean coast making the flashing blue lights of the emergency vehicles look like long blurry lines against the d
Chapter 4: The Crack in the Armor The room was super quiet and you could hear a pin drop. Elena's heart was beating fast. It was like she had a drum in her chest. Silas was standing in the doorway with his hand on the doorknob. He looked confused then really shocked. Julian didn't move back. He d
Chapter 2: The Lion’s DenThe Vane Headquarters was a building made of black glass and steel that stood tall in the midnight sky of Midtown. As Elena stepped out of the cab the cold wind blew her hair across her face. She didn't even notice. She was too scared. Her heart was racing fast. The lobby
Chapter 1: The Ghost of Viral Past The invitation was heavy with lettering; it felt like it could hurt someone. In the world of Manhattan high-society parties a Vane invitation was not a piece of paper it was a ticket to the most exclusive group of people. Elena Rossi stared at the names on the i
