LOGINChapter 6: The Ghost in the Ballroom
The investors were clapping loud but to Elena it sounded like a big wave crashing. She was still holding onto Julian and his body was the thing keeping her standing. She looked over his shoulder. Saw a woman standing at the back of the room. This woman made the whole room feel empty and cold. Julian saw Elena looking at the woman and his body got really tense. He was still smiling for the cameras. His smile did not look happy anymore. It looked scary. "Smile, Elena " Julian whispered to her. "The cameras are still rolling. We have to look happy. Keep looking at me." "Julian, who is that woman?" Elena asked, barely moving her lips. "And why is she talking to the CEO of Sterling Group?" "That woman is my past and my future talking, " Julian said. He pulled back from Elena. Held her hand. "Let's go say hello. It seems an old friend has come to congratulate us." As they walked to the back of the room people moved out of their way. The woman, Madeleine Vane, did not move. She looked elegant. Also a little old-fashioned. She was wearing an old suit. The CEO of Sterling Group, Marcus Sterling was standing next to her smiling like a predator. "Julian " Madeleine said. Her voice was soft and smooth. "You always knew how to make an entrance. Proposing at a rehearsal dinner is a cliché don't you think?" "Madeleine, " Julian said. His voice did not sound happy. "I thought the ocean was big enough to keep you busy. I did not know Sterling was paying for your trip now." "Marcus told me you were about to sell the family business to some people from Paris, " Madeleine said. ". That you were doing it for a girl who made you look stupid on the internet. You must be Elena. You look prettier than you did on YouTube." Elena felt embarrassed. It was different this time. She was not the girl she used to be. She felt Julian's hand get tighter around hers. She realized that Julian was scared. "I am the woman who is going to make sure this deal happens, " Elena said. "No matter who paid for your ticket." Marcus Sterling laughed. "Oh she has spirit, " he said. "I see why you want to keep her.. There is a problem with your deal. Madeleine never signed away her part of the company. Your father lied. He did not get rid of her, he just hid her." The room started to spin. Julian's grip on Elena's hand got loose. "The Bisset Group does not do business with a company that has problems, " Sterling said. ". Madeleine just made me her representative. The deal is dead Julian.. So is your fake engagement." Everything happened fast. The French people started making phone calls. The reporters started pushing forward. The security guards had to lock the doors to the ballroom. Julian did not say anything. He. Walked out of the ballroom and Elena had to run to keep up with him. He did not stop until they were back in their room. He slammed the door. Kicked a table breaking a vase. "Julian stop!" Elena said, backing away. "He lied!" Julian yelled. "My father told me she was not part of the company anymore. He told me he had bought her out. I spent ten years building this company. He left a way for her to come back." "You did not know, " Elena said. "How could you have known?" "I should have known!" Julian said. "Sterling has the power to stop the deal. He can take over the company. Everything I did, including proposing to you, was for nothing." He looked at the ring on her finger. "Is that all I'm to you?" Elena asked. "Just a part of your business plan? You told all those people you could not imagine your life without me." Julian stopped. He looked at Elena and his eyes were not angry anymore. They were sad and scared. "I said what I had to say to save the deal " Julian whispered. "But the deal is gone. Sterling wants to hurt us. He wants to show that our relationship is fake. He knows that if he breaks us he breaks the Vane image." "Then do not let him break us, " Elena said. Julian leaned in close to Elena. "There is one way to stop him, " he said. "If we are married he can not use our relationship against us. We have to get married tonight." "The wedding is in three weeks, " Elena said. "I do not mean the wedding, " Julian said. "I mean the part. We have to find a judge and sign the papers. If I am married to you Sterling can not use our relationship against me." Elena looked at Julian. This was a decision. Behind her was her life and in front of her was a man who was using her but who also made her feel alive. "A year, " she said. "You promised me one year." "I promise, " Julian said. ". We have to go now. Before Madeleine stops us." The phone rang. Julian did not answer it. Then there was a knock at the door. "Julian it's Silas, " his brother's voice said. "The security guards just called. Mom is not just, with Sterling. She brought a court order to stop you from being the CEO." Julian looked at the window. The snow was falling hard. "The stairs, " Julian whispered. "The pilot is waiting for us. If we can get to the plane they can not stop us until we land.. By the time we land you will be my wife." Elena looked at the ring at Julian. She took his hand. "Run, " she said.Chapter 122: The Manhattan Re-alignmentThe wood fire in the library was crackling, the only sound competing with the heavy rain hitting the big windows of the villa. The room was a space with dark wood shelves, old leather books and comfy velvet armchairs but it felt tense, like a war room.Julian stood by the fireplace with a glass of scotch in his hand. He wasn't drinking it. He wore a black sweater and his big frame looked strong and alert. His gray eyes reflected the flickering flames staring out into the dark valley. His business empire was secure. He was still on high alert.Elena sat at the oak desk typing away on the computer. She had a charcoal shawl wrapped around her and a raw quartz pendant hung still against her neck. On her hand a simple silver band caught the warm light of the fire as she worked on some encrypted files from Thomas Vance's device."Thomas wasn't just talking to Geneva, " Elena said, her voice clear and calm. She worked her magic on the files uncoveri
Chapter 121: The Foundations of BetrayalThe heavy iron vault door fully opened with a mechanical sound. This let in a wave of filtered air into the damp stone hallway. Inside the server towers made a pitched humming noise. It sounded like the steady heartbeat of a trapped animal.Thomas Vance stood in front of Terminal 04. His hands stopped moving over the keyboard. He was Baron Hendrick Vance's nephew. Thomas had been the logistics coordinator for the estate for five years. He had worked with the Vane framework for a time. Julian had become the chairman. Thomas had been there before that. He was a careful person. Thomas had managed the estate's transit lists with accuracy. Now Thomas looked different. His face turned pale under the lights. His eyes moved quickly to the monitor. The VALE_09 decoy files had just finished a deletion process.Julian entered the room first. He was very tall. Blocked the exit. His presence made the air in the vault feel tight. Thomas had trouble breathing
Chapter 120: The Ridge SentinelThe storm over the Hudson Valley was really bad at midnight. It tore through the pine trees that lined the steep road to the ridge. The armored Escalade drove through the storm, its windows getting hit with rain as it made its way up the final mountain turns. After the corporate wars in Brussels and the problems in the French Riviera, going back to their private place felt more like a military deployment than coming home.Julian sat in the dark back seat, his big body straight and giving off a lot of energy. His dark shirt was open at the neck. His jaw was set in a hard line. His gray eyes kept looking at the estate's security dashboard. His big hand was on Elena's back holding her close to him. This showed that he was in charge of her safety as they entered their borders, which had been compromised.Elena had her high-security command unit on her lap. Its blue light shone on her face. She had a quartz pendant around her neck and a silver band on her ha
Chapter 119: The Domestic GhostThe bad smell of burned electronics went away as the armored SUV drove away from the Nice airfield. Outside the rain had finally caught up with the Mediterranean coast making the flashing blue lights of the emergency vehicles look like long blurry lines against the dark glass. In the back of the SUV it was very quiet. Elena sat with her laptop on her knees typing with a careful pace that she always used. The rough quartz pendant around her neck did not move against her collarbone. The silver ring on her finger shone under the vehicle's white lights.Julian sat next to Elena looking strong and in charge. He had his arm around her pulling her close to him with a grip that showed he was protecting her. His gray eyes were fixed on the screen watching as the shadow cartel's money was being taken away."The money transfer is going smoothly, " Elena said, her voice clear and sharp. "The VALE_09 system has taken all the regime's hidden money. Every single franc
Chapter 118: The Biometric LockoutThe inside of Hangar 4 was an empty space made of corrugated steel. It smelled like fuel for airplanes, hydraulic fluid and electronics that were working hard. In the middle of the floor there was a jet with no company name on it. The jet was black and medium sized. Its engines were not making any noise. A small unit was humming and making the ground vibrate.Under the jet's wing a temporary medical station was set up. It had computers that were showing a strong yellow light. This light was making shadows on the jet's body.Julian walked past the pieces of the side door. He was really big. Blocked the whole exit. His jaw was tight with anger. His gray eyes were fixed on something in front of him. He did not look at the guns that were lying around the room. Just being there he made the air feel thick and hard to breathe.Elena was standing next to him. She was wearing a leather coat that was a little open. Her fingers were moving quickly on the comput
Chapter 117: The Hangar BreachThe plane landed at the Nice-Côte d'Azur airport in the middle of the night. The Mediterranean coastline was dark. The lights from the coast were shining bright. The Gulfstream plane touched down on the runway with a lot of force making the people inside feel like they were being pushed back into their seats.Julian did not wait for the stairs to come out of the plane. Soon as the door opened he started walking down feeling the warm air of the French Riviera on his face. He was not wearing his coat. The tie and the top button of his shirt was open. His eyes were cold and angry. He looked very powerful as he walked out onto the open space.Elena followed him, her long black coat flying around her legs as she walked. Her face was serious and strong and the stone pendant around her neck was shining in the light of the cars that were waiting for them. There were three black cars with armor given to them by Marcus and his team."The people guarding the hangar
Chapter 31: The Printed ProofThe big glass doors on the floor made a quiet clicking sound as Marcus arrived. This was long before he actually got to the studio. Elena did not look up from her laptop. Her fingers were typing away on the keyboard in a rhythm. She was writing part of the opening sequ

Chapter 29: The Archival KeyThe smell of paper and ink filled the studio as Elena carefully spread out the old shipping logs on the long oak table. Outside a gentle spring rain hit the industrial windows making the city lights look soft and blurry. For fifteen years her research was about looking
Chapter 28: The New ProjectThe happy feeling from the launch of the Nora Vale imprint was still in the warehouse. It was like a melody that you know well. The first edition of the book was on the shelf. It was a reminder of a big win. Elena had been writing for over fifteen years. When she finishe
