Mag-log inChloe knelt down so fast her knees cracked on the hard floor. She covered the word BASTARD with her own body, with her hands, with her jacket, anything so Leo couldn't see it.
"It says... it says Leo's Locker! Yes! Someone wrote your name wrong! So silly!" Her voice was too high, too shaky.
Leo frowned. "But that doesn't spell Leo..."
Ethan was already on his phone. He wasn't calling security. He was calling the principal.
"This is Ethan Knight. My son's locker in Sunflower Class was vandalized. I want the camera footage from the last 24 hours and the name of the parent who did this. Now."
Chloe tried to scrub the word off with her sleeve. Permanent marker. It smeared, making it worse, black ink spreading like a bruise.
"Mommy, why are you erasing my name?" Leo asked, confused.
Behind them, the whispers got louder. Not just mothers now. Kids.
Kevin Zhao, a big 5-year-old in a mini Gucci shirt, son of Mark Zhao, CEO of Zhao Tech, walked up with his backpack. He had seen the live stream last night because his nanny showed his mother.
He pointed at Leo and shouted in his loud kid voice, "My Mommy said you're a bastard! Because you have no Daddy! My Daddy said your Mommy took off her clothes on the internet!"
The hallway went dead silent. Every parent turned.
Chloe felt the floor tilt. Leo's face crumpled.
"What is bastard?" Leo asked Chloe, his big eyes filling with tears. "Mommy, what is bastard?"
Chloe couldn't breathe. She picked Leo up, hugging him so tight her arms hurt. "Don't listen! Don't listen, baby!"
Kevin laughed, encouraged by the silence. "Bastard means no Dad! Where is your Dad? I have Dad! He brings me in Bentley! You have no Dad!"
Leo started crying now, hitting Chloe's shoulder. "I have Daddy! I have Daddy!"
"Where?!" Kevin shouted. "Yesterday only Mommy came! No Daddy came to your show! Bastard! Bastard!"
Leo squirmed out of Chloe's arms. His little face red, tears streaming, he pushed Kevin with both hands.
"Don't call me that! I have Daddy!"
Kevin was bigger. He pushed back harder. Leo fell backwards, his head hitting his own locker — the one with BASTARD written on it — with a dull THUD.
"LEO!"
Chloe screamed. Ethan moved.
He didn't run. He walked. Two steps. He picked up Leo with one arm.
Leo had a small bump on his head, but he wasn't crying from pain. He was crying from shame.
"They said I have no Daddy... they said Mommy..." he sobbed into Ethan's neck.
Ethan held him, then looked at Kevin Zhao.
Kevin, seeing a tall man in a black suit holding Leo, took a step back but still lifted his chin.
"My Daddy is CEO! My Daddy said—"
"Your Daddy," Ethan said, his voice so low the hallway lights seemed to flicker, "taught you that word?"
At that exact moment, Mark Zhao walked in, late, holding a Starbucks, talking loudly on his phone about stocks. He saw his son, saw the crowd.
"Kevin! What's wrong? Who—"
He saw Ethan. He saw Chloe. He saw his son's locker next to Leo's.
He laughed. That rich, stupid laugh.
"Oh, Ethan Knight! Didn't know your... uh... kid was in same class! Small world! My wife told me about last night's show, quite a show your wife put on, ha—"
He didn't finish.
Because Ethan Knight, CEO of Knight Group, who had never thrown a punch in his life in public, who settled everything with lawyers and money, handed Leo to Chloe, and punched Mark Zhao square in the face.
Not a slap. A fist.
PAK!
The sound was so loud a 4-year-old started crying.
Mark Zhao's Starbucks flew across the hallway. His nose burst, blood pouring onto his white shirt. He fell back against the lockers, sliding down.
Mothers screamed. Teachers screamed. A teacher shouted, "Security! Security!"
Mark held his nose, blood between his fingers, in shock. "You... you hit me?! You hit me in a kindergarten?! I'm suing! I'm calling the police! My lawyer—"
Ethan didn't even look at him bleeding on the floor. He bent down, picked up the thick black permanent marker that had been left on the floor under Leo's locker — the one Kevin had used.
He walked to Kevin Zhao's locker, right next to Leo's. Kevin was frozen, crying now.
Ethan uncapped the marker and wrote in huge, furious capital letters that took up the whole locker door:
"BULLY'S DAD IS BASTARD"
He capped the marker, threw it at Mark's feet.
"Now we match," he said to Mark on the floor. "You said my wife has no manners? You said my son has no dad?"
He picked Leo back up. Leo was staring at him with his mouth open, tears still on his cheeks, but eyes wide like Ethan was Superman.
Chloe was shaking. "Ethan! You can't! He's a parent! There are cameras! You'll be on news!"
"Good," Ethan said. He turned to face the entire hallway of staring parents, phones out recording, kids watching.
He held Leo up high so everyone could see him, his blue uniform, his hospital cap slightly crooked, his little face tear-stained but proud now.
"Listen up," Ethan said, his voice carrying down the whole corridor, cold and clear. "This is Leo Knight. My son. My blood. If anyone in this school calls him bastard again — kid or parent — I will beat the parent. I will bankrupt the family. And I will buy this kindergarten and expel your kid. Understand?"
No one breathed.
Kevin Zhao burst into loud wails, "Daddy! Daddy!"
Leo, still in Ethan's arms, suddenly shouted through his tears, loud and brave, "I HAVE A DADDY! HIS NAME IS ETHAN KNIGHT! AND HE BEATS PEOPLE!"
A little girl in pigtails whispered, "Wow, Leo's Daddy is cool..."
Teacher Linda finally ran over, pale. "Mr. Knight! Mr. Zhao! Please! The children—"
Ethan looked at her. "Clean my son's locker. Now. Or I clean your entire staff."
Within 10 minutes, maintenance came with paint thinner and scrubbed BASTARD off until the blue paint shone.
At 9:30 AM, Knight Group Legal sent an email to all parents: Any harassment of Leo Knight will result in legal action.
At 10:00 AM, Zhao Tech's stock dropped 8% after news leaked that Knight Group terminated their $200M logistics contract that morning. Reason cited: "CEO's personal misconduct in kindergarten."
At 11:00 AM, Mark Zhao was fired by his own father-in-law, the chairman of Zhao Tech, who called him and said, "You got punched by Ethan Knight in a kindergarten? You idiot, you lost us $200 million!"
That night, Leo slept between Ethan and Chloe in the master bed, his blue uniform folded neatly on the chair, his little bump on his head covered with a dinosaur Band-Aid.
He whispered, half asleep, holding both their hands, "I like school now. Because Daddy came."
Ethan and Chloe looked at each other over his head. For the first time since Leo was born, they felt like a real team. Like parents.
Chloe reached over Leo and touched Ethan's swollen knuckles, bruised from punching Mark.
"Does it hurt?" she whispered.
Ethan turned his hand and laced his fingers with hers. "No."
But under the pillow, Ethan's phone buzzed. A message from his mother, Margaret, with a photo of an old pink notebook.
Margaret: I found this in your old apartment. Page 82. Read it before you claim another bastard as your son.
Ethan opened it.
Page 82 says "Today I bled..."
Page 82 said: "Today I bled. I think I lost the baby. I didn't tell Ethan."Leo fell asleep at 8:49 PM with his shoes still on.He had refused to take off his blue kindergarten uniform. He said if he took it off, the word would come back. So he slept in it, between Ethan and Chloe in the master bed, one hand holding Chloe's hair, one hand holding Ethan's thumb, his dinosaur Band-Aid on his forehead where he hit the locker that morning. His breathing turned soft. In, out. In, out.Chloe was awake, staring at the ceiling. Her hand rested on Leo's small chest, feeling his heart beat against her palm. She was listening to make sure he was still breathing. She had been listening for 3 years like that.Ethan was awake too, sitting against the headboard, his right hand wrapped in a bag of frozen peas from the kitchen because his knuckles were swollen purple from punching Mark Zhao in the kindergarten hallway. He hadn't said a word since they came home. He just kept staring at the photo secur

The dress fell.Chloe walked the final runway as designer SC. Five hundred people in chairs in the Brooklyn Navy Yard warehouse. Live stream counter on the wall showing 100k viewers and climbing. Vogue, Elle, all the big buyers in front row.The lights were fixed. Ethan had paid his own crew at 5 AM to rewire everything Vanessa's guy had messed with. The venue was beautiful now — dark, foggy, white spotlight at the end.Chloe wore her masterpiece to close the show. The dress she made for herself. White silk that floated when you walked, open back down to her waist, hand-sewn freshwater pearls on the skirt that she sewed one by one while sitting next to Leo's hospital bed during his transfusions. Three months of pearls. Her hands were sweating backstage. Ryan squeezed her shoulder. "You are SC. Go show them."She stepped out.Music changed. One spotlight on her.She smiled. For real. Leo said "Daddy" for the first time not because Chloe taught him — but because Ethan burned the eggs.Morning. Villa kitchen. 7:02 AM.Chloe woke up to the smell of burning and a loud, annoying beep.Beep. Beep. Beep. She sat up in the big master bed, hair messy, and for one second she forgot where she was. Then she heard Leo giggling downstairs and a man's low cursing. The fire alarm. She ran downstairs in her old pajama shorts and an oversized t-shirt, no makeup, hair everywhere — and stopped dead in the kitchen doorway.Ethan Knight, billionaire CEO who once fired an assistant for bringing him coffee that was two degrees too cold, was standing in her kitchen wearing a pink apron that said "KISS THE COOK" in glitter letters. The apron was way too small for him. His hair was messy. He was holding a frying pan with smoke coming out of it, trying to flip something black that used to be eggs. The fire alarm on the ceiling was beeping like crazy."What are you doing?" Chloe shouted over
The villa had 3 toothbrushes waiting — and one of them was pink with "Mrs. Knight" on it.The villa was on the cliff of Long Island. Not the Knight family mansion that was in all the magazines. This one didn't exist on Google Maps. You had to drive through twenty minutes of private forest road to get to it. No paparazzi. No drones. Ethan said he had a signal jammer on the roof. No mothers. No Vanessa.Chloe stepped out of the Maybach holding Leo against her chest. Leo was asleep again, his face hot against her neck, his little hospital bag bumping her hip. The sea wind was strong and cold and it made her wrinkled t-shirt flap. The house was all glass. Warm light inside. Too perfect. Like no one had ever lived in it.Ethan punched in the code and the door slid open silently.Inside was even more perfect. Fireplace was already on. Chloe never expected Vanessa to bring reporters to a child's ICU.Leo's fever hit 39.8 degrees at 2:13 AM in Boston Children's Hospital. The monitor wouldn't stop beeping. The nurses had just changed his IV. Chloe hadn't slept in 36 hours. Her Sincerely Chloe show was in three days in New York and she was supposed to be on a fitting call, but she was sitting on the cold floor outside Ward C, sewing beads onto a sample dress with shaking hands because the hospital WiFi was the only light left. She was wearing the same wrinkled t-shirt for two days. Her hair was in a messy bun. Her eyes were swollen. Then the double doors slammed open so hard they hit the wall.Chloe looked up.Vanessa Lee walked in like she owned the hospital. Full makeup. Red bottom heels that clicked on the sterile floor. Behind her, five bodyguards in black suits, Madam Knight in a pearl necklace, and three reporters with big cameras and flashing lights.Every nurse at the station stood up."Everyone! Look!"
