LOGINHailey walked slowly toward the bedroom, her heartbeat thundering in her ears.
The voices grew clearer with every step she took, and she froze in shock at a corner where they couldn’t see her. “How did you come up with cancer poisoning, though? … and the insurance—that’s top-notch intelligence,” Iris said loudly, her voice laced with admiration towards Carter as her fingers trailed across his shirtless chest. Carter smirked, his eyes fixed on his laptop screen. “Her mother died of cancer, so I took it as an advantage,” he replied casually with a shrug. “That’s amazing… You did a good job,” Iris chuckled softly, leaning in to kiss him. Carter returned her smile but pulled away almost immediately, his gaze never leaving the glowing screen in front of him. “Was it a billion dollars when she is dead?” Iris pressed, her eyes glimmering at the mention of the amount. Carter nodded with a slight smile. “I’ve been using her diagnosis to pull some of the money already. I bought you those heels you liked and invested the rest into estate management.” Iris squealed in excitement, clapping her hands together dramatically. “You’re totally the best, babe! You know what? Let’s buy a house when she finally dies.” But Carter only let out a frustrated sigh. “That’s a nice plan, but that bitch is holding out longer than I expected. Are you sure you increased the dosage?” “Definitely. She won’t last long… She’s already bleeding. She might drop dead anytime soon,” Iris said confidently with a grin. Hailey leaned against the wall, her legs threatening to give way beneath her as she continued listening to them. Every word they spoke was like a knife to her heart. This was her childhood best friend, the girl she had grown up with, and the man she had once believed to be her partner in life. Together, they were plotting her death like she was nothing more than an animal meant for slaughtering. “You bastard!” Hailey screamed with the little strength she had left. “This is insurance fraud,” her voice cracked as she finally stepped out, unable to hold it in anymore. Carter’s head snapped up, and Iris froze mid-laugh. Both of them looked like they’d seen a ghost. Pain burned in Hailey’s chest, her eyes stinging with unshed tears. “What did I ever do to deserve this?” she whispered, her voice low yet trembling. Her hand shook as she grabbed the framed picture of her and Carter from the table beside her. And with one furious motion, she hurled it to the ground. The sound of glass shattering across the floor echoed loudly like a gunshot in the room. “Hailey, listen…” Carter started; his voice was too calm. He was already trying to twist it, to make her doubt what she had just heard. “No!” Hailey snapped, her voice louder this time, filled with anger. “I’m not stupid anymore. You’re not going to gaslight me. I’m reporting both of you to the police!” She turned towards the door, but before she could take a step, Iris grabbed her arm roughly and yanked. Hailey stumbled, her balance slipping, and her already frail body came crashing to the ground. Iris crouched over her, her face twisted with cruelty. “You’re going to die anyway,” she screamed, her voice sharp and shrill. “Why not just die already?” Hailey sniffed, still finding it hard to believe this was the same Iris that she grew up with. The same girl she took as her younger sister. Hailey’s body trembled with pain and fury. With all the strength she could gather, she pushed herself up, staggering to her feet. Her vision blurred, but she charged at Iris regardless. Before she could reach her, Carter shoved her hard. The force sent her backward, her head slamming against the corner of a table. A sharp crack echoed, and she felt warm liquid flowing down her head. Hailey couldn't move, she could only hear the faint sound of their voices as she lay on the cold floor. Carter and Iris panicked at the sight. Their plan would be ruined if she dies this way. “Honey,” Iris called out to Carter in panic, her voice low. “I think she is dead.” Carter growls, his hands combing through his hair in frustration.“She was going to die anytime soon, it doesn't matter how she dies,” he murmured as he bent down to touch her neck. Hailey still felt warm, but life was slowly draining out of her. “Call...an… ambulance…please.” Her voice was faint and weak, barely above a whisper. Carter smirked, there was no way he was going to do so. “People with cancer faint more often.” He stood up. Now facing Iris, who had her hands tightly closing her mouth to stop herself from throwing up at the sight. “She tripped and fell, and we found her like this; we know nothing about it,” Carter said smoothly, slowly pulling Iris into his warmth. “What if we don't get paid?” Iris' voice came out trembling, she was more concerned about the money. Hailey’s eyes shut slowly; her heart was in pieces. The two people she least expected. The only person she thought was on her side. While she thought Iris was always there for her, it was all her disguise, all her plan, they discarded her like she meant nothing. If only things were different, or in another universe, maybe in another lifetime…she wouldn't be the naive woman who got used. She won't be her best friend's spawn or her husband's wife. Tears rolled down Hailey's eyes. “Babe are you sure you’re okay?” Carter's voice breaks through her thoughts, she flinched in fear as her eyes flung open. “She must be so touched she couldn't hide her tears” a voice chirped in, she turned towards the voice and she gasped. It was their assistant editor…the lady had quit her job seven years ago. Hailey blinked hard, trying to organize her thoughts, she was seated at the cafeteria in her workplace with her colleagues. The same day her relationship with Carter went public…. What is going on?Hailey sank into the passenger seat, shutting the door a little too firmly. The sound echoed through the quiet car before Dan started the engine. For a few seconds, she said nothing, her eyes were fixed on the glass reflection of the building outside. Dan glanced sideways. “Are you okay?” he asked. She forced a small smile while tugging at her seatbelt. “Yeah. I'm just a little bit drained.” He gave a slow nod. “Lovers’ quarrel?” Dan asked with a slightly teasing tone. Her head snapped toward him. “That’s not…” She stopped herself mid-sentence, taking a slow breath. “nothing of that sort.” Dan smirked faintly, an amusing smile tugging at the corner of his lips. “If you say so,” he shrugged casually. Hailey looked away, jaw tightening. She wasn’t upset about Carter seeing her with Dan, not really, but then she needed Carter if anything. Dan noticed the shift in her silence and chuckled quietly. “You always get that face when you’re thinking too hard.” “I’m not think
As soon as Trevor left the room, the atmosphere shifted, like everyone could finally breathe again. Hailey was packing up her notepad when Iris’s soft laugh reached her ears. “Well,” Iris said with a honeyed tone, “looks like someone’s about to have a very busy few weeks.” Hailey looked up slowly, meeting her gaze. Iris’s smile was bright and polished, but it wasn't hard to notice the edge to it. “Guess Mr. Trevor must have really been impressed by you,” Iris added, resting her chin lightly on her palm. “Or maybe he’s just punishing you for nearly taking out one of his employees.” A few nearby colleagues chuckled under their breath. Hailey’s jaw tightened, but she forced a small, calm smile. “Or maybe,” she said softly, “he just thinks I can handle what others can’t.” That shut a few of them up. Iris blinked, she clearly wasn't expecting that. Before she could reply, another voice cut through the air. “Let’s not flatter ourselves, Miss Wyn” Mr. Hart. How could she ha
Iris blinked as she watched her leave, her smile faltering once again. There was something in Hailey’s eyes, a quiet awareness that made her chest tighten with unease. Hailey leaned against the wall just outside the conference room, her arms folded loosely as she watched people walk in one by one. Mrs. Rose gave her a small nod with a smile before stepping in as well. The lady was too quiet; if anything, it was almost like she wasn't there. The air hummed with quiet conversation and the faint rustle of papers. Just then, Iris approached with a clipboard in her hand and that ever-pleasant smile on her face; Hailey straightened. “Hey,” Iris said softly, “aren’t you coming in?” she asked. Hailey’s lips curved into a faint smile that didn’t quite touch her eyes. “In a bit. I just… have some trash to take out.” Iris blinked hard as she paused mid-step. “Trash?” she repeated, tilting her head in confusion. “What are you talking about?” Hailey turned fully toward her now, that
Iris laughed awkwardly, her fingers curling tightly around her drink. “Carter was just telling me some things that happened to him recently,” she said, forcing a soft laugh that didn’t quite hide the tension that was already there. “ Relax…I was only pulling your leg,” Hailey murmured with an eye roll and a light smile that didn't reach her eyes. Before either of them could respond, she stood up, gathering her tray. “I have tons of work to do,” she said quickly, anything to escape the suffocating energy between them. The cafeteria buzzed with laughter and clinking dishes, but everything felt muted to her ears. She was lost in her thoughts, replaying the scene of Carter’s easy smile and Iris’s soft laugh over and over again when it happened quickly. First it was a sudden jolt, followed by the loud crash of trays and then a hissing sound…. “Oh my God…!” Hailey gasped as the lady she had just bumped into, a young colleague from the marketing section, stumbled back, her white bl
By the time Hailey arrived at the office, the place was screaming activities on a Tuesday morning with cameras rolling from every side of the company, not to mention the distant smell of burnt coffee. She steadied her breathing as she walked through the hallway, forcing a polite smile at those that greeted her. Just then, her eyes landed on Carter. He was leaning against his desk, his white long sleeve was rolled up revealing his strong arms, his expression was calm and confident. The moment their eyes met, his face brightened almost immediately. “There you are,”he remarked with a low teasing tone as he strode towards her, and before she could process what he wanted to do, he leaned towards her and pressed a soft kiss on her forehead. The gesture was casual and affectionate, the kind of thing that would have made her heart flutter once. But now, it sent a cold chill down her spine instead. A few coworkers nearby chuckled, whispering to one another. This made Carter grin , h
“Thanks, Dan,” she said, her voice soft but carrying a hint of warmth as she stepped out of the car. “You owe me one, okay?” He responded with a small, satisfied smirk. “Whatever you want, Dan,” she muttered with an amused smile, and he grinned before driving off. Hailey rolled her eyes, an exasperated smile tugging at her lips. Some things just never change. Even back in college, Dan had this funny way of chasing after her, teasing and joking relentlessly. But now, seeing him again, she realized he was just… easygoing. Genuine. A stark contrast to the storm of betrayal she would experience in the future. Her thoughts flickered to the future, a few years from now. Dan, this same carefree and funny guy, would one day marry the daughter of a conglomerate. How strange, how different life could twist. Hailey turned her gaze toward her apartment building, its modest exterior a quiet reminder of simpler days. Slowly, she climbed the stairs, each step heavy with disbelief and the
