Chapter 1

My breathing suddenly turned ragged, suffocation crashing over me like a tidal wave.

My family looked as cold as ever. I swayed as I forced myself to stand, planning to go inside and get my allergy medicine.

My twin, Felix Carter, stepped in front of me and blocked my way. "Flynn, where are you going? You haven't finished the kiwi yet."

He tried to shove the remaining flesh into my mouth. I struggled and pushed him away.

Felix had been pampered since childhood and never had much strength. I, on the other hand, grew up in the countryside doing farm work. Naturally, he wasn't a match for me.

He stumbled a few steps back. The kiwi fell from his hand and rolled onto the floor. With a pitiful look, he turned to our parents as if lodging a justified complaint. "Flynn hit me."

Dad strode over and knocked me down with a kick. "You stupid, uncultured bumpkin! How dare you treat your brother like that?"

I lay on the ground, my breathing growing faster and harsher. My throat tightened as I forced out a few broken words, "Medicine… Give me… the allergy medicine… or I'll die…"

Mom pulled Felix into her arms protectively and shot me a look of pure disgust. "Quit the act! I've never heard of anyone dying from eating kiwi fruits!"

Leaning against her, Felix looked at me and fueled the fire. "Flynn, I bought these kiwis especially for you. You can't let them go to waste."

Dad picked up the kiwi from the floor and forced it into my mouth. I closed my eyes in despair. Was this the familiar warmth I had longed for all this time?

Felix and I were twins. After we were born, Mom couldn't manage two babies at once. Since I was the stronger one, she left me in the countryside to live with my grandmother.

Grandma was old. There were many things she simply didn't have the capacity to do. I was always dirty, running around like a wild kid. The children around me often laughed and said my parents had abandoned me.

From that time on, I longed desperately to live with my parents.

They only came back during the winter holidays, staying for a few days at most. Felix, who had grown up by their side, looked like a pampered prince. He wore clean, beautiful clothes and carried expensive toy cars.

As for me, I was always wrapped in an old cotton jacket that didn't fit and barely kept me warm. The only thing I ever played with was mud, messing around with the other rural kids.

When I was seven years old, I finally gathered the courage to tell my parents that I wanted to live in the city with them. Mom looked at me with open disdain.

"Just look at you. You look like some country bumpkin," she remarked. "If people found out you were my child, they'd laugh at me to death."

Dad wasn't pleased either. "Do you have any idea how expensive it is to study in the city? Your brother still has art class and piano lessons. If you come along, what are we supposed to live on?"

After hearing that, I burst into tears and threw myself into Grandma's arms. Later, she scolded my parents harshly. Only then did they promise repeatedly to bring me to the city once their financial situation improved.

I held on to that promise year after year. It wasn't until I finished middle school and got accepted into a high school in the city that they finally had no choice but to let me move in with them.

Everything was written clearly in black and white on the statement. Mom and Felix were inside the police station, so he naturally couldn't deny what he had done.He avoided her gaze. "Mom, I just… I just wanted to teach him a lesson. I didn't mean to take his life…"That simple confession was enough for her to grasp the truth."He was your twin brother!" she barked."How could you do something like that? You grew up right under our wings, and we gave you all our love and attention. Compared to Flynn, you already had far more than he ever did! Why were you so greedy?"Just because we gave him a little attention, you got so insecure that you resorted straight to harming him?"Felix had been pampered all his life, so being scolded like this for the first time left him indignant and frightened. He shouted back, "If anyone's to blame, it's you and Dad! You let me have all your love for 16 years! Why bring him back and let him take everything from me? I wouldn't allow it—not even a li

As I grew older, the kids around me often mocked the way I dressed. They said my clothes looked old-fashioned and hideous. Little by little, those words began to bother me.One day, when Grandma brought out another cotton jacket she had made for me, I lost my temper."I don't want to wear this!" I snapped, throwing it onto the floor. "I want to buy new clothes from the shops in town!"She bent down and picked up the jacket, trying to coax me. "But the clothes in town are expensive. A single piece can cost 30 to 40 dollars. I can guarantee you mine can keep you just as warm!"Back then, my pride had already started to grow, along with a childish sense of comparison. I felt wronged. Every time Felix came, he looked like a prince in his nice clothes, yet I could only wear these plain, awkward-looking things.I cried for a long time. That very afternoon, Grandma took me by the hand and walked with me for an hour to the town market. There, she bought the down jacket I had been dreamin

Grandma's solemn voice sounded from the side, "Back then, I agreed to take care of Flynn when you said you couldn't handle two babies at once, but I never thought that, in exchange, I would strip him of 16 years of parental love."Ever since he started understanding things, he'd always anticipated living and spending time with you. But what did you do? You turned down every chance to be with him, always coming up with excuses that you're busy, like he wasn't a son who deserved your time!"He waited for more than ten years, and when he finally reunited with you, you took away his life in less than a year! Do you have any idea what you've done? Don't you regret it the slightest bit? He'll come back to haunt you!"Faced with Grandma's tearful questioning, Mom was the first to break. She collapsed to her knees beside the bed. "Flynn, my son… I've wronged you…"Dad, too, finally broke down, shouting hoarsely, "What on earth have I done? I killed my very own son…"Grandma wiped the tear

Watching Mom and Dad crying in front of her, Grandma found herself overcome by anger. She raised her hand and slapped each of them once, her voice cracking with heartbreak. "Not even a beast would eat its own child. How can you do something so utterly cruel?"Dad knelt obediently before her. "Mom, I swear his death was an accident! None of us wanted this! He's gone—there's no need to throw ourselves in jail! Who's going to take care of you if I'm gone?""Mom, Michael's the only son you have," Mom chimed in. "Can you bear to see him go to jail?""Grandma, Flynn isn't your only grandson. I'm your grandson, too!" Felix cried out. "You can't favor just one of us!"Faced with their tearful pleas, Grandma finally relaxed her grip on the phone. She looked at Dad with a tired, defeated expression. "Tell me—what do you plan to do?""We'll secretly bury him and tell everyone he died from an illness," Dad replied. He turned to Mom and Felix, asking for their opinion. They both agreed with

Dad's body trembled as he reached out and hovered a hand over my nose, horror in his voice. "H-He's not breathing…"Mom rushed forward to check me as well. By now, I had been dead for seven or eight hours. My body was cold, my lips a deep purple, and even the red rash from my allergy had turned a chilling shade of purple.Seeing me like this, she was so shocked she could hardly speak. "Why… H-How did this happen…"At that, Grandma could hardly stand still on her cane. She stumbled toward me, collapsing to the ground. Dad hurried over to help her up. "Careful, Mom. Are you okay? Did you hurt yourself?"Grandma swatted his hands away and pushed forward to reach me, running her frail hands over my face. "Flynn, what happened to you? Open your eyes and look at me…"Tears streamed from her cloudy eyes. "My darling Flynn…"If there was anyone in this world who had ever truly cared for me, it was Grandma. My spirit drifted close to her. I tried to wipe away her tears, but my hand passed

Mom brought over a cup of water and splashed it onto my face. "Hey, don't pretend to pass out just because you heard we're sending you back!"I lay on the floor without moving. Even my breathing had grown faint."You think this will make me let you off?" Dad scolded, grabbing me by my arm. "No way. I'm sending you back by today, you animal!"He dragged me downstairs, then shoved me into the trunk of the car. Honestly, this wasn't the first time I had been stuffed in there. The first time it happened was when they came to pick me up. At the start, Felix and I were sitting in the back seat together. Halfway through the trip, he got sleepy. He kept shifting around in his seat, unable to get comfortable. In the end, he pouted and suggested that I lie down in the trunk so he could stretch his legs and sleep better. Mom and Dad pulled the car over and told me to get into the trunk. So, for five whole hours, I curled into a tight ball and lay there without moving. At that time, though,
