Astrid's POV.

I sat in my room buried in the world of my book, trying to escape the chaos that had become my life. It had been a month since the concubine selection ceremony, and I still couldn't believe what I had done.

Just as I was getting to the good part in my book, the door burst open and Scarlett stormed in. Red with anger, her eyes blazed with fury, and I shrunk further into my chair-not wanting to piss her off her anymore.

"What did you do, Astrid?" Scarlett spat out, venom lacing in her voice. "What did you do to make the alpha forget about me?"

I said nothing, not wanting to incur her wrath. But Scarlett would hear none of it.

"Answer me!" she screamed, pounding her fist on my dresser. "What did you do?"

I swallowed hard and tried to find my voice. "I-I did what I was told," I stammered. "I spiked his drink, and.and he fell asleep."

Scarlett's face turned purple with rage. "You're lying!" she yelled, advancing on me. "You're lying, Astrid!"

Before I could even have time to react, Scarlett's fingers wrapped around my throat, clasping tight. I tried to pry them off, but she was far stronger.

"Tell me the truth!" Scarlett hissed out, eyes aflame with anger. "Tell me what you did, or I'll suck the life out of you!"

I tried speaking, but my voice came out hoarse from the pressure to my throat. I did manage to croak a few words.

"I-I did what I was told.I swear."

Just as I felt my life slipping out of me, our father burst into the room and snatched me from Scarlett's grasp.

"What are you doing, Scarlett?" he thundered, his face dark with anger. "What's going on here?"

Scarlett's face was still twisted in rage, but she composed herself.

"I'm trying to get the truth out of Astrid," she spat. "She's been lying to me, Father. She's been lying about what happened with the alpha."

Our father's face hardened. "What are you talking about, Scarlett?

Scarlett's voice spat with venom. "Astrid impersonated me at the concubine selection ceremony. And now, the alpha hasn't invited me to his chambers since. I know Astrid did something to make him forget about me."

Our father narrowed his eyes at me. "Is this true, Astrid?"

I nodded, feeling my face flood with a wave of nausea.

Scarlett's face contorted with rage anew. "If I lose the concubine role on your behalf, Astrid, you'll surely pay for that. I will kill you in the worst ways known to man."

Cold sweats broke on my forehead, even with the stillness of the air as words spoken from Scarlett remained, still lingering within. A surge then burst inside of me and caused me to lurch towards the bathroom.

"I-I need to." My voice trailed away to a mutter.

Just as I had almost entered the bathroom, I had thrown up everything I had had for breakfast. After that, everything started going blurred, dizzying, my legs wobbly, shaking-weak, trembling uncontrollably. In one swift unconscious turn of action-as I returned toward my bedroom, my legs gave in and everything went black.

Slowly, I opened my eyes and gradually took in the room. The bright fluorescent lights above me made my eyes squint, and I raised my hand to block off the brightness. As my vision focused, I was lying in a hospital room, and my family stared back at me- disgust etched across each face. My father, mother, and Scarlett gazed down on me.

My mother's eyes were cold and unforgiving , her face pale. My father's brow was furrowed, his lips pressed into a thin line. Scarlett wore a frown , and I could see the anger simmering just below the surface.

Just as Scarlett opened her mouth to speak, in came the doctor-a friendly smile spreading across his face. My father immediately got to his feet and went to him.

"What happened?" he asked, sounding a little worried.

The doctor smiled but then lost the smile and said, "Well, it would appear Astrid is going to be just fine. We did, however, find one interesting thing during the examination."

Dad narrowed his eyes. "What is it?"

He took a deep breath before telling us, "Astrid is four weeks pregnant."

The room erupted into pandemonium; the blood dropped from my face. Mom gasped. Her hand went to her mouth. Then my father's eyes widened with a shock belied by his frail stature-like he'd taken some gut blow. Scarlett was white in anger, the sparks in her eyes in some furious sparkle.

"You silly girl!" Mom spat the moment the doctor disappeared, venom oozing into her voice.

My father's face had turned beet red with anger. "This is a disaster," he growled.

Scarlett's face contorted in anger as she hissed, "You're going to pay for this, Astrid," her eyes ablaze with anger.

As the curses and insults rained down on me from my family, Scarlett's anger overflowed, and she wrapped her hand around my neck, squeezing tight.

"Who's the father?" she spat, her eyes ablaze with venom. "Who is the father of your filthy bastard, you cheap whore?"

I tried speaking. My voice came hoarse from the hold Scarlett had on me. I shook my head, refusing to answer.

Her grip tightened, and I was feeling my life drain out. I was getting dizzy. My vision started to blur.

I mumbled, "Alpha.Ethan."

Scarlett's eyes grew wide, and the grasp loosened at my neck. I swallowed a couple of lungs-full, my fading vision dissolving back to distinctness.

Scarlett snarled, lunging atop on me.

Her hands reached out and grasped my neck, starting a clamp that would slice my air flow. Father moved forward, pulling Scarlett away from me.

"Not now, Scarlett!" he shouted. "You'll squeeze breath from her!

"Let me kill her." Scarlet hissed, wriggling at her bonds.

My mother came forward, ice-cold, hard eyes. "Astrid, you have two options," she said, ice dribbling from her tone. "You can abort the baby, and n

ever mention a word about it, or you can leave the pack.for good."

  • Deceitful Twin:A sister's shadow    Chapter 34: The Child

Ethan’s POV“You asked for me,” Scarlett said quietly as she entered.I nodded, then pointed to the chair in front of me. “Sit.”She didn’t ask questions. She walked over and sat down, folded one leg over the other.“There was a man,” I started. “He showed up at the gate. Said his name was Kai.”She didn’t flinch. “Who is he?”“He said he is a wanderer,”Her brows lifted slightly. “And?”I exhaled. “He didn’t come empty-handed. He came with a child.”Her body stilled, but she didn’t speak.“A boy,” I added. “Around five. Maybe six.”Still nothing.I leaned forward a little, arms braced on the table. “The boy has the Alpha mark.”Scarlett blinked.“Left shoulder,” I said. She finally spoke. “And you’re sure?”“I saw it myself.”She looked away for the first time. “And what else?”“Kai said he rescued the boy,” I told her. “Didn’t say from who or where,”Scarlett’s voice was quieter now. “You think he’s…?”“I don’t know,” I answered. “But he looks like Caleb. There’s no denying that.”S

  • Deceitful Twin:A sister's shadow    Chapter 33: What I Expected

Scarlett’s POVThe moment Anna entered my chambers without knocking, her eyes wide and lips pressed together like they might betray her if she opened them too fast, I knew something important had happened, something unexpected for everyone else but maybe not for me, because I had been waiting for things to begin shifting back into place, back into the order I’d spent years creating in my head before it all got so messy with Astrid’s return and that child being ripped from my arms like he hadn’t ever belonged there in the first place. She stood there for a few seconds too long, the hem of her apron trembling from her hands clutching it too tightly, and when I tilted my head at her and said nothing, just stared, she finally got the words out in one breath like if she didn’t, she’d choke on them.“He’s here,” Anna said, her voice barely above a whisper, though the room was empty aside from us and no one had the authority to question what was spoken between a Luna and her servant anyway.

  • Deceitful Twin:A sister's shadow    Chapter 32: Strange Coincidence

Ethan’s POVIt had been a strange week. The kind of strange that didn’t speak loud, but whispered beneath the surface. The skies had been too still. The air too dry, even with the clouds sagging heavy above the treetops. Something was always on the verge of happening—and yet, nothing ever did.I was in the west courtyard when the guards called for me. I didn’t rush. Things called “urgent” rarely were.Until I saw the look on Calix’s face.“There’s a man at the gate,” he said. “Claims he found a child. Says he wants to speak to you directly.”“A child?” I asked, already turning toward the front hall. “Alone?”“That’s what he said. Found him wandering near the Hollow.”I frowned. “No one lives near the Hollow. No one should be near the Hollow.”“That’s what makes it strange.”That made two of us.I arrived at the entrance just as the gate creaked open again. The guards had already formed a cautious half-circle around the stranger. He wasn’t tall, but he stood like someone who’d fought b

  • Deceitful Twin:A sister's shadow    Chapter 31: The Pack's Hunt

Liam’s POVThe gate creaked open with a familiar groan, one I used to find comforting. Now, it echoed like a warning through my bones.I glanced at Astrid beside me. She hadn’t said much since we left the clearing—just nodded when I told her we were heading back to regroup. Her silence wasn’t empty; it was loaded. Disappointment, grief, anger… all of it bleeding into the air between us.The pack house stood tall against the early dusk, its windows lit like hollow eyes. Home. But nothing about it felt like that anymore. As we crossed the threshold, the scent of pinewood and ash hit me. I used to take pride in the order of this place—how wolves moved with purpose, how they trusted me. But what did any of that matter when I couldn’t protect what mattered most?I ran a hand through my hair and turned to Astrid. “You can wait in my office. I won’t be long.”She gave me a slow nod but didn’t look at me. Not really. Her eyes were scanning the walls, the halls… maybe searching for memories of

  • Deceitful Twin:A sister's shadow    Chapter 30: Rewriting the Truth

Scarlett’s POVBy the time I got to Kai’s house, the boy was finally asleep. It took longer than I expected. He kept looking around with those wide, curious eyes, asking when he was going to see his mum again. I told him she was resting. That she needed time. That she said it was okay for him to come with me.He believed me.Kai opened the door before I even knocked. He stood there, shirtless, tattoos climbing across his collarbones, his face as unreadable as ever.“You brought the kid,” he said.“No point dragging this out,” I replied and stepped inside.I laid River on the couch gently. He didn’t stir. He was exhausted. That worked in my favor.“Is that him?” Kai asked.“Yes.”He came closer and looked at River’s face for a few seconds. “He looks like you.”I raised an eyebrow. “Of course he does. He’s my sister’s son.”Kai crouched down beside the couch and studied the boy in silence. Then he stood again. “We need to erase his memory,” I said. “He can’t know who he is. He can’t re

  • Deceitful Twin:A sister's shadow    Chapter 29 : Strategies

Astrid’s POV“Wait,” Liam said, reaching for my arm. “Astrid—just stop for a second.”I yanked away from him and kept walking. My feet were sore, my eyes dry from crying too long, but my body wouldn’t stop moving because if I stopped now—if I paused for even one breath—I’d remember River wasn’t beside me. I’d remember he was out there, in the hands of a woman who didn’t deserve him, and I wouldn’t know how to survive it.He caught up beside me again. “You’re not thinking straight.”“Of course I’m not!” I snapped, spinning to face him. “My son is gone, Liam! I don’t get to think straight!”“I know—”“No, you don’t know,” I said, my voice breaking before I could stop it. “You don’t know what it’s like to carry a child inside you, to feel every breath, every kick, and then spend five years hiding him, loving him, keeping him alive—only to lose him in the blink of an eye. Because someone you trusted handed him over without even knowing who the hell she was!”Liam flinched.Good.He should
