“I'm not scared. I just need to speak to him,” I said as I skittered out of the room. Jeffrey watched me leave; he looked amused by my flustered escape. I didn't stop walking until I got to my room. I let out a relieved sigh as I leaned on my door, and then I threw myself on the bed. I can't wait to tell Lily everything! Finally, I snuggled into my soft pillow and eventually drifted off to sleep. Lily's eyes widened, and a squeal of excitement erupted from her lips. "No way!" she exclaimed. “But wait, you saw him in only briefs..” Lily gave me a naughty smirk. “How big was it?” “Lily!” I chuckled and slapped her arm playfully. “Well..?” She probed. I blinked.. “I didn't look at him that way,” I lied. It wasn't entirely a lie; I only looked at him very briefly, and it wasn't intentional. “That’s a lie..” Lily chuckled. “Your cheeks are even red.” “Have you heard from Mr. Dan?” I asked, trying to change the topic. "I have.. You won't be getting your job back; they can't wait for you any longer.” “Yeah.. I expected that,” my voice tinged with sadness. “Cheer up, girl!” She gave me a smile that didn't quite reach her eyes. “But I can't believe all this happened just last night. Do you think he really believes you two are married?” “I couldn't tell. I think he does, though.” “You should be careful.” She sighed. “And Robert isn't even here to remedy the situation.” "I know, right? Your knight in shining armor,” I chuckled, knowing this would upset her. She hated Robert. “Stop it. I'm being serious here." She called out, “You know he started all these; he should be the one to put an end to it.” “Jeffrey might be calm now, but what do you think he'll do when he finds out about this whole thing?” She continued.**JEFFREY** “Come in,” I said, responding to the knock on my door. Robert walked into my study. "I heard from Mom about the man who saved you," he said. "I'm glad you're back." He extended a hand, and we shook firmly. "Welcome back, brother, and... congratulations on your wedding." "Ha! Ha!" I mocked. He shifted uneasily, then placed a document on my desk. I picked it up. My signature scrawled across it—my marriage certificate. My pulse quickened. Could it be forged? "February fifth?" I breathed, the date echoing in my mind. "Yes, Jeff, I talked to her father and the witnesses.” He sighed. “There's no denying it, brother; the wedding is real.” He pressed a photograph into my palm. A shiver coursed down his spine when I looked at myself in a suit standing next to Chloe, who was in a way too plain white dress. Amnesia or not, I don't think I ever married this woman. “You know, if you asked me, she's not particularly your type.” Robert continued. She's really beautiful, yes. But Robert was right; she wasn't my type. And why on earth would I even marry a virgin? I ran my fingers through my hair in frustration. I picked up the photograph again. The image of myself and Chloe stared back at me and mocked me. Was I really expecting to see something different? “And you don't even remember getting married to her, why continue with the marriage?” Robert added when I didn't respond. My eyes were still glued to the photograph. If this photograph was fake, then the person who made it did a fucking great job. “I know you're worried about losing half your fortune to her; I have a good lawyer.” He placed his hands on my shoulder and said, "You'll be able to keep sixty percent.” Tcheew. “I need to be alone.” I finally said. He stared at me for a few seconds before heading to the door. “I'll be here if you need any help.” He said, and then shut the door quietly. I need to get my thoughts together and then ask Chloe a few questions later.** CHLOE** “Good morning, Mrs. Blakes. Master Jeffrey wants you down for breakfast.” Mary said as she walked into my room. I don't know why, but I feel very nervous. Probably because of last night? But nothing happened.“Ok, I'll be there shortly,” I said, and Mary shut the door. I put on a collared blue dress before heading downstairs. “Good morning, Jeff,” I greeted as I settled into a chair on the dining table. He lifted his eyes to look at me and then fixed them back on the tablet he held in front of him. What's with him? Mary arrived with a bowl of avocado toast and oatmeal with fresh fruit and placed them on the table before taking another trip to the kitchen to get us some greens and eggs. I helped myself to the food. “This is good.” I said, and Mary replied with a warm smile. I glanced over at Jeffrey, who was still scrolling through his tab. He invites me down for breakfast and then decides to ignore me. How rude. I used my eyes to trace his chiseled jaw and his perfectly pointy nose, and then my eyes dropped to his lips. He was very pleasing to look at. His eyes drifted in my direction, and I hurriedly looked away, “Am I really that good-looking?” A smirk stretched across his face. “What?” “You were staring at me,” “I wasn't” I said, “You've not touched your food,” I added almost immediately, a lame attempt to change the topic. "You've been acting like I'm a stranger.” His eyes softened as he studied my face. “I might have lost my memory, but surely you didn't lose yours too?" I scoffed, "Stranger? That's an understatement.” A hollow laugh escaped my lips. "I want a divorce," I blurted out. His face contorted in confusion. Okay, girl... Where did that confidence come from? "Lost memories may excuse you for forgetting me, but your lies don't. You kept me a secret from your family and lied about your wealth.” He leaned back in his chair. “Wow, this is the first time I heard a woman ask for a divorce because a man was rich.” He let out a sarcastic laugh. “Interesting, don't you think?” He shifted forward, his gaze holding mine. “Why didn't my friends attend the wedding?” “You said you didn't want them there, that we'd have a party after the church ceremony,” I replied. That was what Robert had told me then. “Were you pressured into it? Are you pregnant?” "No,” I snapped. “I told you we've not been intimate.” “Laura is here.” Rachel smirked, appearing from the hallway. Jeffrey's face flickered unease, his eyes darting towards the hallway before he mumbled, “Laura?” and then left for his study.**CHLOE**Rachel glanced at me. I was still seated in my chair by the table."Oh, look who's here," Rachel said, her voice dripping with sarcasm. "I was starting to think we'd seen the last of you," she added.Who's Laura, though? Her name echoed in my head. And why did her presence cause such unease in Jeffrey?Lost in thoughts, I barely registered Rachel's barbs.“Who's Laura?” I breathed; I didn't even know when my thoughts became audible.Rachel's eyebrows shot up in surprise, and then she let out an amused laugh. “Of course he didn't tell you about her. She was his fiance before…” Her voice trailed off, her eyes tracing a slow path from my head to my toes before landing back on my face. “Before you showed up.”Fiance?Just when I thought nothing more could surprise me,“I don't know what transpired between them and how he ended up with you, but I'm sure they'll patch things up soon.” Rachel continued, her voice adopting a falsely sympathetic tone: “Aww, and they're actually per
**CHLOE**He closed the distance between us. I shut my eyes, but I could feel his breath on my nose; he was so close to me."Not today," he said, and a loud, sarcastic laugh ripped from his throat. My eyes flew open, a confused heat rising in my cheeks.Wait.. What the f*ck! Not today? What does that even mean?He moved back, tilting his head. “Why did you close your eyes? Were you thinking I was going to kiss you?” His laughter softened this time, but a spark of irritation ignited within me.I fucking hate this guy, and I never want to have anything to do with him.“No,” I snapped. “Why would I think that?” I added defensively.I really wish the ground would open up and swallow me.“Okay good.” He said. I stared at him, bewildered. Wow, what just happened?"I would definitely get to the bottom of all this," he said firmly, gesturing with his fingers between us before making his way to the door.“And before then,” he opened the door and then turned to look at me, a mischievous smi
**JEFFREY**"You don't remember the wedding, do you? And let's face it, if you'd gone, well… she'd inherit everything." Richard leaned back. "A wife you have no memory of, surfacing just before a near-death experience? The pieces, Jeff, just don't fit."The confusion was driving me crazy. I'd never been this lost in my life. “We’re like brothers; we never keep anything from each other. Do you think you'd have gotten married without informing me first?” He asked. He was right. Even if I had wanted to keep it a secret from my family, I'd have definitely told Richard.“So how do you explain the marriage certificate and the pictures?” I blurted. My eyes searched Richard's face, hoping he'd give me an answer for all this confusion. He was silent.I continued pacing, raking my fingers through my hair even more. This was making me frantic; I had no idea what the heck was going on. “Ok, let's say she had actually managed to forge the certificate and picture somehow, which can't be true.” I
**CHLOE**I got into seven other dresses.Still no luck. “I won't be able to try on all these dresses.” I said with disappointment, as she unzipped the dress I was wearing. Some had slits cut too high, others too short, or had really open backs, or both. "Oh, ma'am, if you're not satisfied, we could call the store and have them bring over more dresses.”“No, it's fine,” I said. “Seems I'll be sticking with this,” I said as I lifted the first dress I had put on, the emerald colored dress. She helped me get into the dress again.Cilia brought out what I assume to be a 6-inch heel; the silver color matched the straps of the emerald dress I was wearing. “There's no way I'm wearing that,” I let out instinctively, and she giggled.I seemed to be amusing her because she had laughed a couple of times already this evening."There's something a bit lower, but it's black," she said as she pulled out a pair of black heels. "Would these work for you, ma'am?”"Okay, I can work with that." She h
**CHLOE**She arrived at our table dressed to kill as usual in a stunning black dress, her hair and makeup flawless. Her gaze met Jeffrey’s, and with a gesture, she beckoned him to stand for a hug, which he hesitantly offered.“Hello, Laura.” I said, giving a small wave in greeting, but Laura seemed oblivious. “I see you brought company,” she said to Jeffrey and pulled out a chair. Her eyes landed on me as she sat, making it hard for me to swallow my food. She turned to Jeffrey, "why did you bring her?" I gulped down hard on my bottle of water. I must really be invisible.“I didn't think you'd show up, would’ve accompanied you myself. I thought you'd still be resting," she continued, darting a pointed look in my direction every few seconds.Jeffrey did not respond.“Thank you all for honoring my invitation,” Richard announced on stage."As you all know, we're having a fundraiser for my charity.” He continued. “My charity supports five worthy causes: the orphanage, widows, the disab
**CHLOE**Chills ran down my spine as I tried to stay silent. “I'll call you back,” I heard him say, followed by the sound of his footsteps approaching the door. In a hurry, I barged into Lily's room.Lily looked startled, jumping up from her bed. “Chloe?” she exclaimed. I rushed over to her. “What…” I used my hands to muffle the words coming out of her mouth. “Shh,” I hissed, gesturing with my right hand. I pressed my ear against the door, straining to hear Robert's footsteps.“You're scaring me, Chloe; what's happening?” Lily whispered again.“I'll tell you soon,” I whispered back.Once the footsteps faded from the hallway, I crashed onto Lily's bed and let out a relieved sigh.“Care to explain what just happened?” she said, glaring at me.“It's Robert,” I panted.“What did he do this time?”“I overheard him talking to someone in a room. Turns out he might have an accomplice.”Her eyes widened. “An accomplice? What did you hear?” She probed further.“Not much detail, just that the
**CHLOE**“Oh, who doesn't know that his middle name is Jack?” Robert announced, walking in.Oh goodness, perfect timing!“You already knew that, didn't you?” He turned to ask me.“I did.” I admitted.I suppressed the smile curling up my lips.“And how do you know that?” Helen asked, turning to Robert. I blinked and turned to Robert too, anticipating his response.“She mentioned it to me earlier, after Jeffrey's funeral. I had asked why he didn't include his middle name on the marriage certificate.” Robert said. He's so good at lying, I almost believe him.“Isn't that right, Chloe?” He asked me.“Yes, it is.” Phew... I ran a hand down my already smooth dress. That was close.“Hmm, why didn't you say something sooner?” Helen asked me.“You saw she was choking, and you kept on asking her weird questions,” Robert retorted.“Robert!” Helen called out.“No lies told. I mean, they're married, bold of you to assume she doesn't know his middle name.” Robert pulled out a chair.Helen leaned b
**CHLOE**"Oh, brother,” Robert muttered, taking a step back. “I was just trying to put her in her place.”“And what place is that?” He growled, his brows furrowing into a dark line. “I know her type; I'm sure she’s only here for the money. You should divor…”“I can handle my business myself, I don't need you to interfere.” Jeffrey barked, cutting Robert off.“You can leave now,” he added with finality.Robert seemed to have more to say, but Jeffrey's final tone left no room for argument. He stormed out after throwing a stern look in my direction. When Robert was out of sight, Jeffrey turned to me and asked, "Is he bothering you?”“No.. Not at all.” I replied with a shaky voice.“Are you sure?” he probed.“I’m sure.” I insisted, forcing a smile.“Okay, good. Because Robert can be a bit...” He ran his fingers through his hair. “Let's just say Robert has a certain... approach.” Yeah, of course, a certain approach indeed."Mmmmh,” I mumbled, and then left.**JEFFREY**Richard walked in
