Jordyn’s POV Larry paused after the first few words of the letter. We all sat in stunned silence. To say that wasn’t the intro we were expecting from Howard’s letter was an understatement. The devil? Living in hell? I was shocked to hear Stanley describe his daughter like that. I’m sure everyone was. But none of us dared say a word, not after Larry’s stark warning that if we did, he’d have us removed immediately. Even so, those first few lines set the tone for what was clearly going to be letters full of surprises. Larry continued. “I know you didn’t mean to marry the devil. Vivienne has a clever way of hiding her horns. She’s a master manipulator, and she married you under false pretenses. I saw it. I knew it. I was well aware that my daughter had swindled you. You thought you were marrying someone kind, someone caring, someone you could build a life with. But nothing could have been further from the truth
Jordyn’s POV My eyes flew open in shock. Right before he CHANGED the WILL? The room fell dead silent as we all processed what Larry had just said. Larry waited patiently for us to absorb his shocking words. My grandfather changed his will? The night before he died? At the last very last moment? That wasn’t like my grandfather at all! He’d been a very meticulous man, always one step ahead, always planning. Changing his will at the last moment was such a spontaneous thing to do. It didn’t make sense. My mind reeled as I sat there, bewildered. Why? Why would he do that? What could have possibly caused him to make a last minute change to a will he’d surely had finalized months, if not years before his death. I mean, it wasn’t like this was some small thing. This was his WILL! This was the document that would determine who received all his assets, who would have his empire. His company, his estate, al
Jordyn’s POV The moment I saw my mother, my skin crawled. A flurry of rage rose up in my stomach and I found myself inadvertently clenching my fists. I hadn’t expected to have such a visceral reaction to seeing her. She had such a smug look on her face and her tone was so derisive. I hated her, I really did, with every ounce of my being. But when her eyes locked onto mine, I also realized that I loved her too. It was so fucking complicated. Memories of my youth flooded back to me. Christmas morning all huddled around the tree in our jammies. Backyard birthday parties at the swimming pool. She wasn’t a very affectionate person, but there had been times when she’d comforted me, when she’d rubbed a cool cloth over my forehead when I had a fever, or let me climb into bed beside her when there was a lightning storm. And yet… That same woman had tried to kill her own father. She’d manipulated and blackmailed Ellie, a woman I’d been eng
Cassandra’s POV We parallel parked on the busy street outside the law office. Dillon would be meeting us there, but Cameron, Dillon, and Stella, and Laura would have to wait outside, since they weren’t named in the will and there were privacy legalities. So it was just Jordyn, Howard, and I, and we ascended the stairs into the law office.“Nervous?” I asked Jordyn as we entered the lobby area.“Surprisingly, no,” he said, with a slight grin. “I think I’m just excited to get this over this. I mean, my feelings about this are complicated. There’s a part of me that will always love her. She’s my mother, after all. But she made choices and these are the consequences.”I nodded. I was personally really looking forward to seeing Vivienne in handcuffs. She’d made my life a living hell while I was married to Jordyn, and she’d hurt people I love. I didn’t like the thought of a court room trial. I’d have to testify, obviously, but Laura assured us the court case would be pretty stra
Jordyn’s POV I’d never actually pressed charges against someone before. It was pretty nerve wracking walking into that police station. Police men had always intimidated me. I was glad I had my dad with me, even if he wasn’t exactly what you’d call a pillar of strength. My poor dad was so nervous, he’d sweat right through his shirt. But we were very prepared, thanks to my goddess of a girlfriend, Laura. She’d told us exactly what to say, and then rehearsed it with us over and over last night until we both felt confident. “I’m here to file press charges,” I told the receptionist. I explained a little bit, and then she went to fetch the head of police. He took us into a room, and we relayed everything Laura had told us to say. He took notes as we talked. “We’re requesting, um,” I faltered. Shit, how had Laura phrased it. Things like this made me nervous. The law was so…particular. I was terrified I’d mess this up. “We’re r
Dillon’s POV Sometimes, I really liked being a lawyer. This was one of those times. I was at the courthouse, filing my whack of papers. First, there was the court order that would force the reading of the will. I was filing the order on grounds of ‘pending criminal charges’, which would expedite the reading. Next up were Howard’s divorce papers. There was something really satisfying about helping someone end a bad marriage. I thought back to the divorce papers I’d drawn up for Cassandra all those months ago. Divorce papers from Jordyn, who was, ironically now the reason I was here, filing more divorce papers. I was happy that Howard was divorcing Vivienne, just as I’d been happy that Cassandra had been divorcing Jordyn. For very different reasons, though, obviously. And finally, I had the court orders which would immediately freeze all of Vivienne’s assets the moment the will was read on the grounds of pending criminal charges, a
