Chapter 2: A Secret She Would Never Tell

last update Veröffentlichungsdatum: 28.07.2026 16:32:46

The rain refused to let up.

Evelyn walked aimlessly through the empty streets, her clothes drenched and her vision blurred by tears. Every step felt heavier than the last, yet she couldn't bring herself to stop.

The Sterling Mansion disappeared behind her, swallowed by the storm.

So did the life she had spent three years trying to protect.

Her phone vibrated inside her handbag.

The screen lit up with a familiar name.

Grandma Margaret.

Evelyn wiped her eyes before answering.

"Grandma."

"My dear, have you told Damian the good news yet?" the elderly woman asked excitedly. "I was smiling all afternoon just thinking about the look on his face."

Evelyn bit her lower lip until it hurt.

"No."

There was a pause.

"What happened?"

"We're divorced."

The words came out so quietly that they barely sounded real.

On the other end of the call, silence.

"Evelyn..."

"He asked me to sign the papers."

"Oh, my child..."

"I signed them."

Grandma Margaret sighed heavily.

"Does he know about the baby?"

Evelyn looked down at her stomach, shielding it with one hand as if protecting the tiny life growing inside her.

"No."

"And he never will."

"You can't mean that."

"I do."

"He deserves to know."

Evelyn closed her eyes.

"He deserved to know when he was still my husband."

"He deserved to know before he chose another woman."

"He deserved to know before he threw me away."

Her voice cracked.

"But now... this baby is mine."

"I won't let my child grow up in a home where love has to be begged for."

Grandma Margaret didn't argue again.

She knew her granddaughter well enough to recognise when a decision had already been made.

"If that's what you truly want," she said gently, "then I'll stand by you."

For the first time that night, Evelyn smiled.

It was small.

Painful.

But genuine.

"Thank you, Grandma."

"Come home."

"I don't want you wandering around in this weather."

"I'll send Robert to pick you up."

Evelyn shook her head.

"I need a little more time."

After ending the call, she looked up at the dark sky.

A taxi slowed beside her.

"Miss, are you alright?" the driver asked through the open window.

She hesitated before climbing inside.

"Take me to Riverside Apartments."

The driver nodded.

As the taxi pulled away, Evelyn rested her forehead against the cold glass.

She replayed every moment of the afternoon.

Damian's expression.

His cold voice.

Sophia's triumphant smile.

The words Thank you.

Three years of marriage.

Reduced to a signature and two words.

A warm tear slipped down her cheek.

She quickly wiped it away.

"No more crying," she whispered to herself.

"I'm not alone anymore."

At the Sterling Mansion...

Sophia poured herself a glass of red wine and walked onto the balcony.

"Finally," she said with a satisfied smile.

"She's gone."

Damian stood near the fireplace, loosening his tie.

His face remained unreadable.

Sophia wrapped her arms around his waist from behind.

"You should be happy."

"We're finally together."

He didn't respond.

Instead, his eyes drifted toward the front gate where Evelyn had disappeared less than an hour earlier.

For reasons he couldn't explain...

The mansion suddenly felt unusually quiet.

Sophia noticed his distraction.

"What are you thinking about?"

"Nothing."

"You don't regret it, do you?"

Damian answered almost immediately.

"No."

He believed that.

He had convinced himself that divorcing Evelyn was the right decision.

Their marriage had been arranged by their grandparents.

There had never been love.

At least...

That's what he kept telling himself.

Sophia smiled and kissed his cheek.

"You made the right choice."

Damian gave a slight nod.

Yet, for the first time in years, he found himself wondering...

Why had Evelyn smiled when she signed the divorce papers?

It wasn't a happy smile.

It was the smile of someone saying goodbye forever.

The thought lingered in his mind far longer than he cared to admit.

Outside, thunder rolled across the sky.

Neither Damian nor Sophia realised that Evelyn had walked away carrying the only child Damian might ever have.

And with every passing minute...

The distance between them grew harder to cross.
