The elevator opened on the fortieth floor at nine o'clock, and Seraphina stepped out in black.

A tailored suit the color of midnight. Hair pinned back. Low heels that clicked on the marble like a metronome. Around her throat, a single strand of pearls that had belonged to her mother, and on her left hand, bare skin where a ring had once been.

Chairman Harlan walked half a step behind her. Behind him, two assistants carried leather folders.

The double doors of the board room stood open.

Damien came at seven, with a paper bag of oranges and an uncertain expression. "I didn't know what to bring," he said at the door. "The housekeeper told me babies don't eat oranges. I brought them anyway." Seraphina laughed. It was the second time in a week, and she was beginning to recognize the sound. "Come in." He stepped into the hall and looked around slowly, at the soaring ceiling, the pale marble floor, the portraits of men with her father's jaw. He did not whistle. He did not comment on the size of the staircase. He simply stood very still, as though the house were a thing that might change its mind about letting him in. "I'm sorry," he said. "It's a lot." "You get used to it." "Do you?" She considered. "No." They ate in the small dining room off the kitchen, where there was only a round table and two chairs. She had asked the cook to leave a cold supper and go home. It was not a romantic dinner. There was a roast chicken, bread, a dish of green beans, and a candle Mrs

Seraphina sat in the back of a black car across the street from Cole Tower at nine in the morning, the window tinted, her hands folded in her lap. She wore a pale grey coat, dark glasses, and her hair loose. Beside her on the seat lay a cream envelope that Harlan had just carried across the street. She had walked into that building for three years. She had come with a lunch bag for Adrian that he never ate, with papers he forgot to sign, with a smile she wore like armor. The doormen had never learned her name. The receptionist had once asked if she was delivering flowers. "He has it, Madam," said Harlan, sliding back into the seat. "I gave it to him in the lobby. He opened it at the desk." "Did he read it?" "He read it twice. Then he stopped walking." Through the glass doors of the tower, small as a figure in a snow globe, she could see a man in a dark suit standing perfectly still. The envelope hung from his fingers. His shoulders had gone rigid. She knew the words by heart. Y

"Twenty-three days, Madam."Harlan placed the calendar on her desk with a sort of grave ceremony. Each box had been struck through in red pen, except for one near the bottom of the page, circled twice in black."The thirty-day notice was served nine days ago. On the twenty-third day from today, Cole Industries owes forty million dollars it does not have, to a creditor it cannot identify."Seraphina looked at the circled date for a long moment."He's still searching?""Every bank. Every law firm. He has hired a private investigator. He has called the Swiss registry six times." Harlan paused. "Madam, he is also asking questions at the gala circuit. He believes the buyer is someone he insulted.""He's right.""He believes it is a man."She laughed, once, softly, and set down her pen. It was a strange sound in that quiet office. She had not laughed in so long that she hardly recognized it."Let him believe it."She rose and walked to the window. Below her, the city moved in its slow, gold

The staff stood when she walked in.All forty of them, in the executive lobby of the Valmont tower, rose from their desks in a rustle of paper and fabric. A young man in the front row dropped his pen. A woman near the window pressed her hand to her chest. Nobody spoke.Seraphina kept her eyes straight ahead and her steps even. She had walked through the Cole mansion with her head bowed for three years. She had not known, until this moment, how much it would cost her to lift it.Harlan opened the double doors at the end of the corridor."Your father's office, Madam."She stepped inside and stopped. It was a large room, all dark wood and pale light, with a wall of windows over the city. A heavy desk sat at the far end. On it lay a single object: a small brass compass, its glass cracked, its needle still pointing steadily north. She had given it to her father when she was seven."He kept it here until the day he died," said Harlan quietly. "I have not let anyone move it."Her fingers clo

Twelve faces turned, and conversation died. She had imagined this moment a hundred times, but never like this: not with a fresh bruise beneath her collar, nor a month of sleepless nights behind her eyes. She walked to the head of the table, set her hand on the back of the chair that had been her father's, and did not sit."Good morning," she said.No one answered. At the far end of the table, a heavyset man in a grey suit rose slowly, smiling. She woke to silence, and for a moment she did not know where she was.The ceiling was too high. The sheets were too soft. Pale morning light poured through tall windows onto a wall of cream silk, and somewhere below, a clock chimed seven, Seraphina lay still, one hand on the warm weight beside her, and listened for a slap, a shout, a footstep.Nothing came.Theo slept in a carved cradle at the foot of her bed, his fist curled beside his cheek. She had named him at three in the morning, in the jet, with the engines humming beneath her and Mrs. Holloway dozing in the seat opposite. She had looked down at that small, stern face and the name had simply been there, like something she had always known.Theo. A gift. She rose and crossed the room barefoot. A dressing room opened off the bedroom, longer than the guest room she had slept in for a year. Rows of gowns hung in pale silk, in navy and ivory and deep wine, each wrapped in tissue. A velvet tray held a hundred small boxes. On the vani
