Needing An Escape

Waking up to the sunset coming over the horizon and a cup of hot, fresh coffee in my hand was an amazing feeling. I sat at the edge of the cliff overlooking the valley below and just breathed in the fresh air. The fog dancing and playing through the trees below made the world look almost like a fantasy realm.

The morning I spent finishing the camps’ set up, gathering kindling and firewood, setting up a fire pit on the rivers smooth stone edge so as not to risk it spreading to the surrounding forest. When I finished moving stones to surround the makeshift fire pit it was mid-morning and already quite warm, sweat forming all along my skin. I found my canteen was empty already and moved to fill it in the cool water from the spring fed river, but while I was kneeling along the water’s edge, I heard shuffling behind me, along the forest’s boarder.
