Chapter 6

Penulis: Inky Belle
"I already submitted my resignation."

"Huh?" The HR manager froze.

Silence. Then—

"So you..."

Meredith knew the drill—two weeks' notice, clean handoff. She wasn't about to leave a mess.

"I'll head in, get the handover started."

"Okay, okay. I'll wait here."

She hung up and exhaled.

Her apartment? Already sold.

Once this was done, she was out for good.

Her incision still throbbed.

After a short rest, she grabbed a cab to the firm.

The second she walked in, the mood flipped.

"Meredith!"

"You're finally back!"

A few junior assistants rushed over, practically glowing.

The way they lit up—it hit her. They really cared.

"I'm just here to hand things over." She smiled at one of them. "Jessica, you're taking my cases."

"You're actually leaving?" They all glanced at each other, uneasy.

Meredith nodded. "Yeah."

***

The second Grady heard Meredith was back, he burst into Alden's office.

"She's back!"

"Knew she couldn't stay away. Soon as she heard you were firing her, she came running." Grady beamed.

Alden didn't flinch. "You free? Want some of my contingency contracts?"

Grady backed off, hands up. No thanks.

Anything on Alden's desk came with a price. Big risk, big cut—but only if you won.

As he turned to leave—

"Send Meredith in."

Grady smirked. "On it."

Meredith was mid-handover when someone called, "Mr. Gardner."

She looked up—Grady, grinning.

"Alden wants to see you."

She stood.

As they walked, Grady leaned in, voice low.

"Meredith, with a guy like Alden? You gotta be just as ruthless. Don't let him win. He ditched your wedding—because you let him."

Her hand hit the doorknob. "You coming in with me?"

"Nope." Grady backed off fast. "Not that brave. Good luck."

And he was gone.

Meredith took a breath, then pushed the door open.

Alden's office was just as stiff as ever—dark wood, legal books, zero warmth.

He sat behind that massive desk, flipping through papers.

"Mr. Ashford, you asked for me?" Meredith stood straight, voice steady.

Totally normal—at work, he was always Mr. Ashford. First names were personal.

But this time, Alden's pen stopped cold.

He looked up, the faintest crease in his brow.

Gone a week, and she looked... thinner. Her face had lost its usual softness.

In that plain white shirt and black slacks, she looked almost breakable.

"You were sick?" he asked, frowning. "Why'd you lose so much weight?"

It was just a minor surgery, but a week recovering from appendicitis had cost Meredith seven pounds.

"Did you need something, Mr. Ashford?"

She kept it clipped, all business.

Alden's frown deepened.

Hearing her say 'Mr. Ashford'? Felt like a gut punch.

He was showing concern—she didn't even flinch.

Yeah, he screwed up at the wedding, but it was life or death. When did she get so cold?

"You vanish for a week and think I won't fire you?" His voice iced over.

"I've already resigned," Meredith said, calm.

"I didn't approve it."

"Under labor law, you can't legally refuse—"

"Meredith!" he snapped.

Her lashes flicked. She looked away, lips tight.

Silence fell—heavy and sharp.

After a beat, Alden spoke again, tone tighter but controlled.

"There's a meeting this afternoon. You'll come with—"

"I said," Meredith cut in, slow and clear, "I've already resigned."

His face darkened.

"You done throwing your tantrum?"

She was really walking away?

Leaving him?

Since day one, she'd clung to him like a shadow.

Cold words, sharp edges—never fazed her.

He'd turn around, and there she was.

If anyone knew Meredith couldn't live without him—it was him.

Resign?

Not a chance.

"Even your tantrums should have a limit. You really think I'll just let you go?"

"I don't need your permission." Meredith locked eyes with him. "I'll finish handing off my cases and leave. Don't worry—it won't take more than a day."

His expression turned thundercloud dark.

Before he could speak, a knock hit the door.

Grady popped in. "Alden, we need to—"

He didn't finish.

Alden grabbed the nearest folder and launched it.

"Get out!"

Papers flew.

Grady disappeared like a whack-a-mole.

Meredith frowned, just barely.

Alden never blew up like this. Even pissed, he usually just frowned.

Throwing things?

That was new.

She looked away, face calm, voice steady. "As for my shares, just cash them out at market—"

But he was already moving.

Alden stood and closed the distance fast.

Tall, intense—his presence hit hard.

Those eyes, ice-cold.

He spoke slow, each word like a punch.

"You'd better think this through. Once you resign, don't expect to ever come back."

Alden stepped closer, voice raw. "Meredith... I finally found you."She looked up, calm. Eyes steady. Cold.He froze. She was still stunning. Still her. And if she so much as smiled, he might've convinced himself the last month was just one awful dream."Mr. Ashford," she said flatly. "What do you want?"Like a slap. She only ever called him that at work. Everywhere else, it was just 'Alden'—when she was teasing, pissed, laughing... real."I..." His throat locked up. He forced it down. "I've been looking for you..."He reached for her wrist without thinking. She stepped back, no hesitation. "Why? We broke up."He flinched. "I never agreed to that."She almost laughed. "Didn't ask for your permission."Still flat, she angled away. "If that's all, I've got work. Excuse me."Her coldness didn't hit like a slap.It dragged.Like a dull knife, scraping nerves raw.She turned to go. He grabbed her hand. Silence. Finally.Meredith leaned back, rubbed her temples. Her pulse had just started to settle when Luke's voice blasted from outside her office."Boss! Boss! You HAVE to come see who's here!"Ugh. Headache, back.Probably another walk-in. She shoved up from the chair, forced on a neutral face, and opened the door.Luke stepped aside, practically buzzing. And there he was.Alden.Thinner. Jaw set. "Boss! It's Alden Ashford! My actual idol—"White noise.Meredith's nails dug into her palm. The sting snapped her out of it.'Don't panic. It's done. We're done.'She took a breath, shoved the chaos down, and turned—to Luke, not Alden. Voice steady.

"Meredith..." Sharon's voice had that fake-casual tone, awkward but trying. "Why'd you leave without a word? No heads-up, nothing. When are you coming back? I miss you..."Too many questions. Too fast. It reeked. For five years, Sharon barely tolerated her as Alden's girlfriend. Always polite, always picking. Never warm. Her not insulting Meredith? That had already felt like a blessing.A month ago, this call would've wrecked her. Now?Honestly, kind of funny."I'm good. Thanks for checking in," Meredith said, calm as ice. "If you've got something to say, say it."Sharon froze. That little pause? She wasn't ready. Even after lowering herself to this, Meredith still wasn't playing along.Sharon scrambled. Voice sharpened. "Alden's just... like that. Stubborn. Awful at feelings. You KNOW how he is. Why take it so personally?"And selling your apartment? Seriously? That was impulsive. You do realize what property costs in Borevia now, right?"If you ever come back, good luck fi

Grady never bought the act. Not from Rowena. Definitely not from Vicky. That crash? It was sketchy from day one."Meredith? That bitch's nothing next to me!" Vicky snapped. "I grew up with Alden! He'll figure it out—he'll know I'm the one!"Grady let out a cold laugh. "You mean the one who causes scenes? Or fakes a suicide attempt at his wedding?"Her lips trembled. "Y-You're making that up.""Am I?" His stare turned glacial. "Come on, Vicky. Alden only put up with you because of your mom. That patience? You burned through it."He stepped closer. "Meredith's gone. And he's done. Stop humiliating yourself."Each word landed like a slap.Vicky shook, finger aimed at him, mouth moving—nothing came out. What did he know anyway? She and Alden shared history. The same world. Meredith never understood him like she did."You're all brainwashed by that bitch! You'll regret this!" she shrieked, heels stabbing the floor as she stormed off.Grady watched her go, his brows tight. He gl

Vicky hit redial, her teeth clenched."The number you have dialed...""Ugh!" She almost hurled her thermos across the floor. Her fists clenched, nails digging in as her chest heaved. 'Meredith—that bitch—is out of sight but still screwing everything up.'There was no chance of that. She would wait, however long it took."Get me a coffee," she snapped, strutting into the lounge like it was hers. "Fresh ground. No sugar. No milk."The receptionist clocked her on sight—Vicky Beech, the girl who wouldn't quit popping in for Alden. Around Alderith, everyone whispered: she's the reason Meredith bounced.Annoyed, but not dumb, the receptionist went to make it.Time dragged.Vicky downed one cup. Then another. Still no Alden. Her patience wore thin.Ding. Elevator. She perked up, straightened her skirt, and grinned. "Alden, you're finally—"Nope. Grady."Ms. Beech?" He blinked. Frowned. "You're still here?"Her smile snapped. "Where's Alden? I've been waiting all afternoon!"Gr
