Outside the hospital room, four bodyguards in black suits and dark sunglasses stood on either side of the door, motionless, like silent statues.

From inside, Hugh's hearty laughter could be faintly heard.

The bodyguards exchanged brief glances, hesitation flickering in their eyes.

As Hugh's entourage, should they step in to ask if he needed anything?

But knowing Hugh's deep dislike of interruptions, they ultimately decided to hold their positions and remain outside.

Just then, hurried footsteps echoed down the corridor.

Lynn strode over. The moment he saw the scene at the door, his brow furrowed. He sized up the four burly, expressionless men in black.

"Who are you? What are you doing here?"

The four men stared straight ahead, offering no response.

Lynn raised his voice. "I'm Mr. Liam's assistant. I need to go in now. Step aside, please."

The bodyguards didn't budge. One of them finally spoke, his tone flat and mechanical.

"Our boss is in a private meeting. No one is allowed to enter

That evening, in the front courtyard of the Rupert estate, a car came to a smooth stop.Liam opened the door and stepped out, the cool night air brushing away the lingering glitter of the banquet.Only a faint trace of alcohol remained, clinging lightly to his collar and cuffs.Inside the living room, only a single warm wall lamp was left on. Cecilia was curled up on the sofa, a hardcover book resting open on her knees, her fingers paused on one page.Hearing the familiar footsteps, she lifted her head and watched him walk into the pool of light."The banquet's over?" she asked softly."Mm." Liam loosened his tie with one hand, the silk sliding between his fingers. He walked over to her, bent down, and pressed a gentle kiss--cool with night air, faintly scented with wine--against her smooth forehead."I had a bit to drink. I probably smell like alcohol. I'll go take a shower."Cecilia took the suit jacket he handed her, her fingertips brushing the cool lining."I told you not to drink

"Ugh--!"Meredith's entire body jolted as if an invisible sledgehammer had slammed into his chest. An unimaginable, blunt pain exploded from the point of impact, instantly stealing his breath. The air was forcibly driven from his lungs, his vision darkened, and his body staggered back a step on instinct. He clutched his chest and bent forward, unable to produce a single coherent sound.A deathly silence spread through the room, thick and suffocating.Every gaze was filled with shock--and grim understanding. That shot to the center of the chest had been precise to the point of cruelty.Liam, however, seemed utterly unaware of the frozen atmosphere. He shook his head lightly, his tone carrying a hint of almost self-mocking regret."Looks like I lost," he said calmly. "To stay completely still under those conditions--that kind of composure is admirable."Spoken so lightly, those words were far more cutting than open mockery. Each syllable was like a needle wrapped in cotton, piercing Mer

Every pair of eyes in the room was locked onto the two figures at the center of the floor. The air was thick with the acrid scent of propellant and a sense of danger that felt ready to explode at any second. No one present failed to understand what this confrontation represented.Meredith--Eliot Hammond's only son.Stories about him had circulated endlessly in private circles. When he was ten, he had casually mentioned wanting to see what lay beyond the atmosphere.Less than half a year later, Eliot had launched a private suborbital flight program under the banner of a Youth Aerospace Education Initiative. This was a young man who had grown up indulged without limit. If he had asked for the moon, Eliot would likely have found a way to hand it to him.And then there was Liam--son of Ferdinand Sinclair. Until this year, his name had rarely appeared in headlines, yet his rise had been suffocatingly fast.No scandals were needed, no media hype required. Just stacking his titles together w

Meredith's gaze sharpened instantly, blade-like, locking onto Liam's seemingly calm profile.A surge of irritation rose from deep within him--this man who kept calling himself an amateur was anything but.The steadiness of his grip, the rhythm of his shots--everything about him screamed veteran. After several rapid alternating rounds, their scores were neck and neck. Meredith could already feel the dull burn in his arms, muscles protesting from the strain.Liam lowered his rifle and tapped the tabletop twice with his fingertips. A faint, unreadable smile touched his lips."Winning like this doesn't feel very honorable," he said, lifting his eyes to Meredith. "How about...I give you two shots back?"Meredith's fingers tightened abruptly around the grip, his knuckles blanching as veins surfaced faintly at his temple. He drew in a deep breath, forcing down the anger churning in his chest."Since we've already come this far," he said slowly, each word squeezed out through clenched teeth,

At seven in the evening, traffic streamed past the entrance of BoomPark, an elite private business club, headlights weaving into a sea of light.Camera flashes lay in wait, locking onto every luxury car as it rolled up.Liam stepped out of his car, pausing briefly to straighten his collar. Then, surrounded by silent bodyguards in black, he walked into the brilliant glow.Inside the banquet hall, perfume and tailored suits filled the air.Chapman stood with his hands clasped behind his back, rigid as a jagged reef. To the endless flow of greetings and flattery around him, he responded only with brief, restrained nods.Liam took a glass of champagne from a passing server's tray and, without preamble, cut straight through the crowd to Chapman."General Chapman, good evening. Tonight is quite the spectacle." Liam raised his glass, his voice low but perfectly audible. "I thought I saw the Secretary of State's motorcade earlier. I imagine the First Lady will be arriving as well."Only then

The courtyard of the Rupert estate was quiet and sunlit.Eleanor was chasing after a small bird that had flown in from who knew where, laughing so hard she forgot everything else.Cecilia lay back on a lounge chair, resting with her eyes closed.Suddenly, Eleanor tumbled down at her feet and looked up at her with a bright smile.Cecilia lifted her eye mask. "What is it?"Eleanor pointed off to the side.Cecilia followed her gaze and realized that Rebecca had somehow appeared and was now sitting quietly on a nearby chair, staring blankly at the distant sky.Eleanor tugged at the hem of Rebecca's dress, spun in a little circle, then ran off again."Do you feel any better?" Cecilia asked softly.Rebecca seemed to nod--or perhaps she didn't. She kept staring at the sky, saying nothing."You didn't eat breakfast. Are you hungry?"Rebecca shook her head. Her voice was barely above a whisper. "Cecilia...am I stupid?""Why would you say that?""I know...I know this will pass eventually. But I
