Gia stared blankly as Ronald walked toward her.

Her fingers instinctively clenched the hem of his jacket, her voice trembling.

"What did you mean by what you just said?"

Ronald sat down on the chair beside the bed, his posture relaxed, as if they were discussing an ordinary business matter.

"Since someone went to such lengths to arrange this little show for me, wouldn't it be rude not to play along?"

Gia's hand slipped away soundlessly. The corners of her lips twitched into a pale, fragile curve.

"So… it's all just for show? For the people outside?"

"The show is fake," Ronald said evenly, "but it has to be acted as if it's real. You can't go back to SCA anymore. In that case, we might as well give them exactly what they want to see. An engagement party--next month, on the tenth."

Gia lowered her eyes, saying nothing.
