Chapter 3

"Let me go!" I screamed, struggling.

Marco dragged me toward the operating room like a dead dog. This was a private hospital controlled by the family; the doctors and nurses all took orders from the D'Angelos.

I was pinned down onto the cold operating table, my legs spread in humiliation.

"Marco D'Angelo! If you dare touch this child, you'll regret it!" I hissed.

Marco stood to the side, lighting a cigarette, and coldly ordered the doctor: "No anesthesia. Teach her a lesson. Get rid of it immediately."

The cold metal instruments touched my skin, and despair almost drowned me.

Just then—

Bang!

The doors to the operating room were kicked open. Two large men in black suits rushed in, instantly taking down the doctor and nurses.

Immediately after, an elderly man with gray hair but a sharp, vigorous presence walked in.

It was Luca, the Don's most trusted Consigliere.

"I dare anyone to touch her!" Luca’s voice wasn't loud, but it carried an undeniable authority.

Marco froze, then frowned. "Uncle Luca? Did my father send you? Tell Father this is a family matter, he doesn't need to worry about it."

Luca looked at Marco coldly, his eyes like he was looking at a dead man.

"Miss Elena is the Don's honored guest. If you dare lay another finger on her, you can say goodbye to those casino businesses."

Panic flashed in Marco's eyes. In this family, Lorenzo's word was law.

"I understand... I'll explain it to Father personally when he returns." Marco gritted his teeth, glared at me viciously, and turned to leave.

Luca immediately had his men help me down and respectfully draped a coat over my shoulders.

"Miss Elena, you've suffered. The Don knows the young master almost harmed you and... the child. He's already on his private jet and will arrive in New York tomorrow morning."

I touched my stomach, still shaken.

"I'm fine... I just need to hold on until he gets back."

Luca gave me a meaningful look.

"In the Don's eyes, nothing is more important than you and the little master."

I insisted on being discharged. I had to go back to the apartment to get some important items—tokens Lorenzo had left for me.

However, when I rushed back to the apartment, the sight before me was suffocating.

My once luxurious bridal house had been turned into a funeral hall.

The furniture was smashed to pieces, and the walls were splashed with red paint reading "PUTTANA" (Whore) and "LADRA" (Thief).

In the center of the living room sat a black coffin.

It was surrounded by funeral wreaths.

"Who did this?!" I was trembling all over.

At that moment, Bella was livestreaming on her phone. Standing amidst the ruins, she cried crocodile tears:

"Yes, right here... my sister who was switched at birth. She stole twenty years of my life. Now that she's been exposed, she not only refuses to call off the engagement, but she also got pregnant by some random man and tried to pin it on Marco..."

"She even tried to kill me... she conspired with outsiders to steal the family assets..."

The comments were full of vicious curses. My phone started vibrating like crazy with countless death threats.

Even my boss at the art gallery sent a message.

"Elena, we're terminating your contract. You offended people you shouldn't have."

I rushed forward to snatch Bella's phone.

"You lying bitch!"

But several tattooed, foul-smelling men stepped out of the shadows and blocked my path. They were Marco's enforcers.

Marco walked out of the bedroom, playing with a switchblade.

"Elena, you've disappointed me. Since you won't abort that bastard, don't blame me for not being sentimental."

"What are you doing?" I stepped back.

"Don't you like wild men?" Marco smiled cruelly.

"I've contacted 'The Convent'—the place that specializes in breaking women. There are plenty of Russians there who will love you. Once you learn how to be an obedient bitch, we'll talk about how to deal with that baby."

The thugs approached me with lewd grins, forcibly dragging me toward a black, unmarked van parked downstairs.

"Let me go! I am Lorenzo's woman! If you touch me, he'll cut you into pieces!" I screamed in despair.

Marco stood by the car door, laughing in contempt: "Still dreaming? Why would my father ever want someone like you? Take her away!"

The door slammed shut, and darkness filled with the smell of mold and blood enveloped me.

"Heard this broad is pregnant? Bet that adds a special flavor..." One of the thugs started tearing at my clothes.

Just when I thought it was all over—

A black, armored Bentley appeared, blocking the van's path!

Five years later. Sicily. This is the birthplace of the D'Angelo family, and now, it is our home. The afternoon sun spilled over the lawn of the three-hundred-year-old estate like liquid gold. The air was thick with the scent of lemon trees and olives.I lounged beneath a white parasol, holding a glass of chilled pomegranate juice.Time hadn’t left a single mark on my face; if anything, the nourishment of power and happiness made me look even more composed than I did five years ago."Leo! Stop picking on your sister!"Near the fountain, two angel-like children were playing.Five-year-old Leonardo had the same raven hair and deep blue eyes as Lorenzo. Even at his young age, he already radiated that natural, imposing authority.Right now, he was trying to splash water on his sister.Sofia, who had inherited my light brown hair, cleverly hid behind a stone pillar, giggling."Let them play."Lorenzo walked over, leaned down to kiss my cheek, and handed me a peeled grape."Luca just sent th

Three months later, the best private hospital in Manhattan was surrounded by black-clad bodyguards.Lorenzo held my hand nervously, his palm sweating, his eyes glued to the ultrasound screen."Congratulations, Don. Congratulations, Madam."The elderly doctor adjusted his glasses, his face beaming with a sincere smile."Two strong heartbeats. It’s twins—a boy and a girl."On the screen, two tiny lives were curled up together.Lorenzo froze. I had never seen him make an expression like that.In traditional Italian Mafia families, mixed-gender twins were seen as a miracle, a symbol of prosperity and balance."Two..."Lorenzo muttered to himself, then suddenly stood up and leaned down to kiss me—a kiss that was passionate and trembling."Elena, you are the greatest gift God has ever given me."That afternoon, the entire New York underworld was shaken. With a wave of his hand, Lorenzo transferred three of the family’s private islands in the Mediterranean to my name as a reward for the "moth

The silence in the grand hall was so absolute you could almost hear the champagne bubbles popping in the glasses.Every pair of eyes shifted from shock to naked disgust and revulsion.Bella froze in place, the microphone dropping from her hand and hitting the carpet with a dull thud. The mask of the victim she took such pride in had shattered completely."No... this is fake! It's Photoshopped! Elena framed me!"She screamed like a madwoman, trying to rush the stage to block the screen, but her legs were jelly, and she couldn't take a single step. However, the person reacting even more violently than her was Marco, standing right by her side.Marco stared dead at the medical report on the screen, his eyes nearly popping out of his skull. His face turned from ashen to a sickly green—the color of pure terror mixed with physical nausea.Three months ago. That timeline matched exactly when he had dumped me for Bella, the days they spent wildly hooking up under the Eiffel Tower. His hands sh

Bella's stupidity went beyond anyone’s wildest imagination—it even crossed the line of Lorenzo’s tolerance.Three days after being kicked out of the penthouse, she gave an interview to a TV station known for digging up dirt.On camera, she looked haggard. She wore no makeup and cheap, worn-out clothes. Through tears, she accused "Mafia forces" of persecution, hinting that the D'Angelo family had not only illegally stripped her of her assets but had even issued death threats against her.She was playing with fire.Omertà—the code of silence—is the cornerstone upon which the underworld survives. Anyone who breaks it isn't just a traitor to the family; they become public enemy number one to the entire circle.Lorenzo watched Bella’s twisted face on the TV screen, his expression terrifyingly calm."She thinks this is a Hollywood movie, where playing the victim gets you justice."Lorenzo pressed the off button on the remote, and the screen went black instantly."But she forgot one thing. Th

When I woke up again, I was back in the hospital. The last time I was here, I was nearly forced into an abortion. This time, the doctors and nurses who had laid hands on me were gone. The new doctor had clearly been briefed by Lorenzo; his attitude was incredibly friendly."Miss Elena, the fetus is fine. You just have some soft tissue contusions. You need bed rest."I sat up, instinctively touching my stomach. Thank God the baby was okay.My phone screen on the nightstand lit up. I picked it up to see countless push notifications.Although Bella's livestream had been cut off, screen recordings were spreading like wildfire online. In the video, I was painted as a vicious adopted daughter who would do anything to climb the social ladder—pregnant with a bastard child and attempting to murder her sister. The comment section was filled with vile abuse. Some people had even doxxed the gallery where I used to work, threatening to splash paint on it."Shameless homewrecker!""Die, you thief wh

The rear door was yanked open by a hand clad in a black leather glove."Lorenzo..." I choked out, tears streaming down my face.Inside the van, the thug cursed, reaching for his gun."Shit, who the..."Thwip!There was no wasted breath.Lorenzo raised his hand, and his silenced Beretta made a muffled sound. A neat bullet hole appeared in the man's forehead, and his body slumped over, limp. The remaining thugs were terrified out of their minds, scrambling backward on their hands and knees."Don... Don Lorenzo?!"In this city, there wasn't a soul who didn't recognize that face.Lorenzo didn't even glance at the trash. He moved with infinite gentleness, lifting me out of the wreckage."I'm sorry. I shouldn't have gone to Milan to choose your engagement gift."His deep voice resonated in my ear, trembling slightly.I gripped his lapel tightly, inhaling the familiar scent of cigars and amberwood on him. It was the scent of safety."Our baby...""I know."Lorenzo’s gaze swept over my abdomen
