Chapter 03

Author: Lilia
A trial for a dead woman? I almost laughed. It was a soundless, bitter thing.

At the word "trial," Vivian's face went sheet-white. She clutched Oliver tighter, fat tears rolling down her cheeks.

"It's all my fault," she sobbed. "If I hadn't begged you to save Oliver, Valentina wouldn't hate me, and Mia wouldn't have..."

She couldn't finish, instead raking her own nails down her face.

Three bloody lines welled up instantly.

Alexander lunged, grabbing her wrist. "Vivian, what are you doing?"

"Let me die," she cried hysterically. "If I die, maybe Valentina will forgive me and come out of hiding to save Oliver..."

Her words twisted in Alexander's gut like a knife. He gently stroked the wounds on her face, his own eyes filling with a venomous rage.

"Don't you dare say that!" Alexander gritted out. "The one who deserves to die isn't you. It's that selfish bitch!"

I watched coldly from my place in the air.

Vivian had perfected the art of playing the victim. In a few sentences, she had masterfully redirected Alexander’s fury back toward me and cemented his pity for her.

She did the same thing three years ago. Every time she stirred up trouble, she would play the innocent, making Alexander believe I was the one tormenting her.

Alexander pulled Vivian into a fierce embrace, stroking her hair. "Don't be afraid. I will make her pay."

He turned to Marcus, his voice iron. "Go to the isolation ward. Bring me Rebecca."

At the sound of that name, my soul jolted violently.

Rebecca—my mother.

"Since her daughter refuses to show herself," he snarled, "her mother can suffer the consequences."

Marcus nodded grimly and left.

Ice filled the space where my heart used to be.

Three years ago, after Mia and I were murdered, my mother’s mind shattered. She’d wandered the pack lands, a ghost in her own right, manically searching for us and vowing to find our killer.

Worried she would tarnish the pack's reputation, Alexander had her locked away in the isolation ward for "mental instability."

It was a place for wolves with fractured spirits and high criminals. A pit of despair.

And now, he was going to use my poor, broken mother to threaten a dead woman?

Half an hour later, two pack warriors dragged a skeletal figure into the infirmary.

I almost didn't recognize her.

Three years of isolation had left my mother gaunt, her hair streaked with white. She could barely hold her human form, her wolf pressing at the seams of her skin.

But her eyes still burned with a defiant light.

"You!" she shrieked, her voice a rusty blade. "You're the ones who killed my Valentina and my Mia!"

She tore free from the warriors' grasp and lunged for Vivian.

But Alexander kicked her, sending her flying. My mother slammed into the far wall and coughed up a thick spray of blood.

"The old bitch still has some fight in her," Alexander sneered, glaring down at her. "It seems the isolation ward hasn't taught you any lessons."

My mother struggled to her knees. "You're murderers! I want you to pay with your lives!"

"Pay with our lives?" Alexander scoffed. "Your daughter murdered her own child out of spite and is now a fugitive. What right does a crazy old woman like you have to demand anything from me?"

He knelt, grabbing a fistful of her hair and yanking her head back.

"Listen to me, Rebecca. I'm giving Valentina three hours. If she doesn't show herself, you will take the Alpha's punishment for her."

His voice dropped, cold and precise. "Pack Law, Article Thirteen: A Luna who betrays the mate bond shall have her wolf spirit stripped from her body and be exiled from this world. Since she isn't here, you, her mother, will take her place."

Hearing this, my mother began to laugh.

It was a sharp, desperate sound that clawed at the walls of the infirmary.

"Hahaha… you want to find Valentina?" she cackled through her tears. "Valentina isn't coming back."

Alexander frowned. "What do you mean?"

My mother used every last ounce of her strength to roar, "Because she's already dead!"

For the next three days, the screams of Vivian and her mother echoed relentlessly from the back alley. But Alexander's revenge was far from over.On the fourth day, he walked into Oliver's room in the infirmary. The child he had once cherished as his own was groaning in pain on the bed."Cease all treatment," Alexander ordered the pack physician."But Alpha, Oliver's condition will deteriorate...""I said stop." Alexander turned to leave. "Let him rot."Oliver opened his weak eyes and looked at Alexander. "Daddy... save me...""I'm not your daddy," Alexander said without looking back. "You're just a bastard."A week later, Oliver died in agony.Alexander had his body dragged to the back alley and burned in front of Vivian."Do you see that?" he said to the woman who was now barely recognizable. "That's what happens to your son.""I will grind his bones to dust so that he may never find peace."Vivian's sobs were heart-wrenching, but Alexander remained unmoved. At the same time, he bega

"Don't go to the Elders!" Zoe and Vivian shouted in unison.Their shared panic exposed everything.Vivian immediately dropped to her knees before Alexander, tears instantly welling in her eyes. "Alexander, I know you're angry, but please, for the sake of our years together, don't do this to us.""I admit my mother may have done some... extreme things, but she was only doing it for me!" Vivian cried, a picture of sorrow. "She couldn't stand to see me get hurt, so she...""Extreme things?" Alexander laughed coldly. "Murdering my mate and my daughter... in your eyes, that's just 'extreme'?"Seeing that Vivian's tears were having no effect, Zoe switched tactics. She laughed maliciously. "Alexander, stop pretending to be so heartbroken. Weren't you happy the bitch was dead? Why play the good guy now?""If you hadn't said yourself that she should die, would we have even done anything?" Zoe grew more smug as she spoke. "She got what she deserved! An ungrateful bitch who didn't appreciate her

Seeing Alexander's rigid expression, my mind drifted back to the past.He wasn't always this cold. The first time our mate bond connected, he held me tight and whispered in my ear, "Valentina, you're a gift from the Moon Goddess."But then, Vivian and her mother moved into our territory.Alexander started calling me petty, saying I wasn't forgiving enough, that as Luna, I should take care of the other she-wolves and their cubs.Later, no matter what I said to him, he would reply with irritation, "Why are you always so much trouble?"The last time, when I knelt before him, crying and begging him not to hurt Mia, he said coldly, "You should be the one to die, not standing in my way."He just never thought I actually would. Now, Alexander stared at the images from the Moonstone, holding a report that Marcus had cautiously handed him. His face grew uglier by the second. Before the Moonstone went completely dark, it had also captured the moment Zoe arrived."See this? This is what happens t

Vivian sensed the shift in him."Alexander..." she choked out, letting go of his arm and taking a few steps back, clutching the ailing Oliver to her chest."I understand." Fat tears rolled down her cheeks. "You don't believe me anymore, do you?"Alexander looked at her, his expression unreadable. "Vivian, I don't...""No, you do." Vivian shook her head sadly. "Rebecca's words have made you doubt me. You think I'm the one who killed the Luna."She crouched in the corner with Oliver, the very picture of an abandoned, pitiful woman."If that's the case, I'll take Oliver and leave," her voice trembled. "I won't be a bother to you anymore."As she turned to leave, Alexander moved to block her path."Vivian, you've misunderstood." Alexander sighed, reaching out to gently stroke her cheek. "I believe you. Of course, I believe you.""Really?" Vivian looked up at him, her eyes shining with tears."Of course." Alexander pulled her into his arms. "You're right. Rebecca is unstable. We can't trust

Alexander froze, the Moonstone slipping from his hand."No... impossible..." He shook his head, his voice trembling. "She was my Luna. I gave her the highest honor in the pack. How could she..."Marcus kept his head bowed, not daring to meet Alexander's gaze. "Alpha, there is no question, the body is the Luna's. Though the Luna tattoo was carved away, the mate mark remains."Alexander collapsed to the floor, his face a deathly white.Vivian rushed to his side, clutching his arm."Alexander, don't be so distraught," she soothed, then her tone shifted. "Actually... what happened to her... she wasn't entirely blameless."Alexander looked up at her. "What do you mean?"Vivian bit her lip, feigning hesitation. "I heard... three years ago, because she was unhappy with you, Valentina started frequenting those sleazy clubs where low-life wolves gather...""What did you say?" Alexander’s brow furrowed."I don't want to speak ill of her, but..." Vivian's eyes filled with tears. "Why else would r

Alexander was silent for a dead, heavy moment, then he erupted in cold laughter."Dead?" He straightened up, looking down at my mother, who had collapsed in a heap on the floor."You think I'd fall for such a pathetic lie?" Alexander pulled a glowing Moonstone from his pocket. "Valentina is just trying to escape her responsibility, so she sent you, a madwoman, to put on a show."He held the Moonstone aloft. Through it, an Alpha could share his Luna's sight."Since she wants to play games, I'll let her watch the consequences of her defiance."He spoke to me through the mate bond, his voice a venomous whisper in my soul. "Valentina, I know you can see this. You have a choice. Show yourself and save your mother, or watch her die because of you."My mother lifted her head with a monumental effort. "You monster..."Alexander took a silver-laced whip from a hook on the wall. "Then let me show you what a real monster looks like."The silver whip cracked against my mother's back."Aaargh!" she
