Mag-log inThunder rumbling woke me again, and when I became fully aware of my surroundings, I was surprised to see Natalia still snuggled against me. Edge was sitting in a chair near the bed; he was staring across the room toward the window, and I wondered what time it was. “Edge?” He seemed lost in thought as he stared out at the storm. His head snapped around, and he came to his feet. “What’s wrong?”“Nothing. Why aren’t you sleeping?” He smiled. “It’s only nine, Nova. I’m not tired. Dr. Jericho said you should have some broth tonight and then you can have solid food tomorrow evening. If you’re hungry, I'll go and heat your broth.”My stomach was growling, so I nodded. While he went to heat broth, I tucked the blankets around Natalia and padded toward the living area. I froze when I saw so many people gathered. Landon spied me first and surged to his feet. “Nova, you shouldn’t be out of bed.” Edge spun in the kitchen and frowned. “I’ll bring you the broth. You need to rest.”“I can sit at
I followed Cassian, and by the time we pulled up to Sonni’s home, I almost had Ranger under control. Staying on Cassian and Smoke’s heels as we entered the house, Sonni intercepted me. “Let Dr. Jericho assess her first, Edge.”“Please, Sonni. She was out there because of me.” I swallowed hard and tried to hold back my tears. She guided me into a chair and sat next to me. “She’s your mate.”I nodded. Sonni sighed. “You wanted to throw her away because you couldn’t sense her wolf.”I cried then and buried my face in my hands. Sonni pulled me against her and held me while I tried to pull everything back in. My mother’s voice almost broke me again.“How did I raise a son willing to throw away a goddess-blessed bond because he thought the female was weak?”Meredith Blue, or Merrie to those who loved her, could be a force to reckon with. When she was Luna of the Blue Stone Pack, she was fair and kind, but never a pushover. Now that Sonni has taken over as Luna, my mother has started a ch
My nightmare started just like all the others, with me in the middle of battle during the beast war. Then, it morphed into that guy attacking Nova, and I couldn’t get to her in time. Landon and Cameron also couldn’t reach her. No matter how fast I ran, she was further and further away as the male slammed her into the wall and snapped her neck. Terror was ripping through me because I knew she couldn’t protect herself. By the time I finally got to her, she was already gone. Sobs tore through me; Ranger whined. I failed to protect her, just like I couldn’t protect Natalia, just like I couldn’t protect Peter and the old omega couple during the war. I knew it was unreasonable to blame myself for Natalia being thrown down the stairs; I hadn’t known she existed. But I blamed myself every single day for the injuries Peter sustained. He was the pack’s Head Warrior, and we had been assigned to work together to push the rogues back. I had been distracted and lost focus; Peter paid a steep pric
I stretched and then sighed. I felt so warm. I haven’t felt this warm since summer. Cracking my eyes open, I tried to remember what happened. When my brain finally cleared, I sat up and stared at my surroundings. It was still dark out, but I knew I was inside a bedroom. The last thing I remember was the big male grabbing me and shaking me so hard it felt like my brain got scrambled. Then I saw a huge black and gray wolf attack the male and kill him. It wasn’t the first time I witnessed death. I saw my dad and his beta kill plenty of rogues and even a few pack members. What shocked me the most was Edge. His face showed deep concern, and his hands were so gentle. Looking into his eyes, I swear I could actually see his wolf. I couldn’t remember anything after that. A whimpering sound from across the hall caught my attention. Wherever I was, I wasn’t alone. Slipping out of the bed, I moved quietly to the door. A nightlight in the hallway cast a soft glow, and I recognized Edge’s home.
I took Griffin’s advice and went home early. I didn’t expect to see Nova’s bare feet, though. They were just as dainty as she was, and I frowned. It was cold outside; she should be wearing socks or slippers, not walking around barefoot. She apologized twice for taking her shoes and socks off. I was confused about why she thought she needed to apologize. Grabbing my keys, I fled the alpha floor. I had wanted to haul her into my arms and kiss her senseless until she stopped apologizing.I ran into Cameron on my way out. He frowned at me.“Edge, I’m worried about Nova.” That caught my attention.“Why?” I barked out without meaning to.“She was out this morning walking to the packhouse. Poor thing was soaking wet and shivering so hard. I don’t know where she slept, but it couldn’t have been very warm.”Nova was outside the packhouse last night? It was dangerous here in the northern territory. We still had issues with a few rogues sneaking through the border, plus there was a drug ring tha
At the northern gate, Cameron left the SUV running while he ducked into the guard shack. I looked around the area with interest. The gates were just as ornate as the ones in the southern region, but there weren’t any homes or businesses that I saw. Actually, I didn’t see any homes or businesses once we passed that little park. Cameron climbed back behind the wheel and handed me a cherry pastry. “Breakfast of champions.” He quipped as he took a bite of his pastry. I had to chuckle. I think I liked this warrior. He wasn’t pushy or gruff. He seemed to respect my privacy and didn’t make me feel threatened or like an idiot. At the packhouse, I thanked Cameron for the ride and hurried inside. I still had fifteen minutes before I needed to be upstairs. My hair was still pretty wet, one of the downsides of having thicker, longer hair, but at least my clothes were mostly dry. My poor feet were still wet, but once Edge left, I could take my shoes and socks off and dry them. I bumped into La
