Serene's Pov

Dressed, I made my way to his room, ignoring the nervous tightening of my stomach.

“Well, there's an angel,” Sebastian said as he saw me approach. “Agnar, you dog. I'll take your ungratefulness and present you with your surprise anyway. Ready?”

Agnar's voice filtered out from the open room. “I can only assume every last one of you in this house has gone stark, raving mad. And since madness deserves no courtesy, you’ll forgive me if I don’t waste my breath on replies you’ve not earned—”

He trailed off when he saw me. “Serene?”

“See?” asked Sebastian before taking his leave.

Agnar kept staring at me, his expression unreadable, as though he were trying to place me in a memory. My palms itched at my sides, but I forced them still.

“Are you the surprise they’ve been talking about?” he asked finally, his tone caught between disbelief and curiosity.

I still stood at the threshold when I replied, my throat dry. “Yes... I believe so.”

His eyes roamed my face from where he sat, as

Serene By the evening of the next day, I was back home. And Daphne was back in Roman's place. No one was the wiser. There had been a rowdy welcome from the men when I arrived, but even through my smiles, I was secretly on the lookout for one person.Agnar. But he wasn't there.“Oh,” Oliver said, as if he read my thoughts. “Agnar isn't home now. He had things to take care of. I'm sure he would have stayed back if he'd known you would be arriving today.”Ivar snorted and said, voice mischievous, “How sure are you that he would have stayed back if he knew?”Oliver slapped the back of his head. “Shut up.”“Ow!”Sebastian held my hands, eyes twinkling. “We missed you. Very much.”“I missed you, too.” It was true. I missed the warmth and the comfort and the rowdiness.I had grown to like them, to be comfortable with them, and that was something I wasn't ashamed to admit.“So, did you guys prepare a feast for me?”“Hell, yeah, we did. Oliver cooked today, so you're in for the treat of your

Serene's Pov “She gave birth to a dead child!”“Yeah, what do you expect? She's cursed!”“This entire household is cursed!”“Goddess, no!” shrieked the maid. “Don't say that! We're not cursed!”“I don't mean us,” the maid jerked her head towards a lifeless-looking Ianthe and a dead baby. “I mean her and the Alpha. An unlucky little family.”“Well, there's nothing else to do now. We have to get ready for a burial. Poor baby.”“Burial? Didn’t you hear that the head guard has sent for the Alpha's sister, and she said the baby should be taken to the hospital to ascertain the cause of death?”“I thought she birthed the child dead!”“Well, not really. People are sayin—”I shoved past her in a panic before she could finish her statement and forced my way past the bevvy of people at Ianthe’s doorstep. The tray of food fell from my hands at the sight that lay before me.“What happened here?!” I asked the head guard who, with the others, was staring at a dead baby at the foot of the bed. Besid

AUTHORDaphne jumped as a rough hand grabbed her. It was Ianthe and there was pain written on her face. She straightened up from her task on the bedside stool and followed Ianthe’s pointing finger. It was then that Daphne saw that her water had broken. “Get it out. Out, out,” she chanted. Ignoring her, Daphne made her way to the wardrobe. She grabbed a few towels and a handcuff."Open," She instructed and stuffed the paddings into Ianthe's mouth. It wasn't necessary. Ianthe had been isolated to the deepest part of the house where her cries and woes couldn't be heard and where she couldn't be seen, and Daphne was the only maid who had the "nerve" to attend to her. The birthing mother spat out the towel and moaned again.Daphne cuffed the woman as she spoke, “Such a shame that your lover could not be here to watch you birth your child. A really big shame. I would have loved the look on his face.” But she had made sure Roman had no chance to leave the dungeons. For the past three w

Serene's Pov“Agnar,” I whispered, still shocked.A corner of his mouth lifted in a smile and he got up from the wooden chair. “Hello, Serene.”I swallowed. His presence seemed to engulf the entire room, blurring out anything that was not him. “W-what are you doing here?”“I missed you,” he replied simply, and the admission made my mind go blank, the reply wiped clean. He waited, simply watching—smile still tugging at his lips, eyes faintly glowingWith a sudden catch in my throat, I swallowed again, opening my mouth to speak.“I—”What was I trying to say? That I missed him, too? That I sometimes hear the echoes of his laughter in my head, or that I miss that calm that comforted, yet terrified me?“How have you been?” he asked before I could get my words together. “G-good.” My voice was barely a whisper.Curiously, he turned slowly, his gaze sweeping the room as if cataloging every detail of the small crude space.“How did you get in here? The guards at the gate.... Did Ivar come wit

  • Ex-Breeder's Return for Vengeance    Green Eyes

SERENE'S POV Within moments, the heavy oak door burst open and some of the guards stormed in, weapons half-drawn.“What in the hell is going on here?!” the lead guard, a burly man with a scarred face, roared.I didn't stop shaking as I replied, pointing to the almost lifeless girl on the floor. “A-a-alpha R-r-roman stabbed her.”A stunned silence fell, broken only by my ragged breathing. Then, the scarred guard's face darkened, his voice a low growl. “What?! Are you insane, girl?! How dare you utter such an outrageous lie?! Alpha!” he bellowed, turning towards Roman. But the Alpha was a silent, unmoving lump in the corner, his head buried in his hands, rocking back and forth like a man possessed.“Alpha!” the guard called again but got no response still.Another guard rushed to the dying girl. “Who did this to you? Talk! Quick!”She pointed weakly with her blood-stained fingers. “A-alpha Ro-roman,”The guard turned to me. “What happened?”Tears sprang into my eyes. “I don't know!”
