Chapter 6:
The drip I had ripped out earlier now fixed back in place. My body was still too weak, rejecting the medication. I turned to the other side of the bed, sobbing quietly. The door creaked open, and Alex walked in. To be honest, I didn’t want to talk to anyone right now. My head was pounding, and I was overwhelmed with confusion. “Hey… Are you alright?” Alex asked softly, but I didn’t respond. I was holding back my tears, unable to bring myself to look at him. “Mira, are you crying?” “No, I’m not…” I managed to say, choking on my own tears. “What’s wrong?” Alex pressed gently. I wiped my tears and finally turned to face him. “What’s wrong? Alex… I was pushed down the stairs. My son watched me struggle for breath in a pool of my own blood. I lost my baby, got divorced, and my ex-husband tried to kill me. I have no idea where my son is… Why did I even survive?” I broke down, sobbing uncontrollably. Alex said nothing at first, silently watching me cry for what felt like hours. Finally, he spoke. “I warned you, didn’t I? But you didn’t listen. You didn’t want me; you chose my brother.” Alex mumbled the words, and I pretended not to hear, but the truth hit me hard. He was right—he had warned me. My mind drifted back to the night before my wedding. June 28, 2014 Tomorrow was my wedding day. The house was bustling with people. Even though my parents had refused to let me marry Aaron, they had no choice now. I had been hanging out with Aaron, hoping to get closer to Alex, but I couldn’t. Alex was cold, distant, and a man of few words. I just couldn’t understand him. Aaron, on the other hand, was the complete opposite. Aaron was always around me, complimenting me, making me laugh. Even though he knew I was betrothed to his brother, he flirted with me, and I found myself falling for the wrong brother—Aaron, not Alex. I wasn’t just in love with Aaron; we had slept together, and before long, I was pregnant. My parents were deeply disappointed but said nothing. They simply let me marry him. That night, as I was about to leave for Aaron’s bachelor party, I received a message from Alex. “I’m not saying this because I wish I were the one you were marrying tomorrow. I’m saying it because I’ve known Aaron all my life. What makes you think he loves you so much when you barely know each other? Don’t marry him.” I ignored the message, brushing off his warning without a second thought. Present Day: The memory faded, and I found myself back in the present, staring at Alex. I lay still on the hospital bed, staring at the ceiling, my mind spinning with memories I wish I could erase. Alex sat beside me, quiet for a moment. “Do you feel pity for me?” I asked, my voice low, barely above a whisper. Alex turned his head slowly, his face unreadable. “Do you feel pity for yourself?” he shot back, his tone sharper than I expected. I blinked, surprised by the question. “Why are you asking me that?” “Because,” Alex said, leaning back in his chair, “if you don’t even feel pity for yourself, why does it matter if I do?” His words stung, but deep down, I knew he wasn’t trying to hurt me. I stayed silent, tears threatening to fall again. After a moment, I asked softly, “Do you think I deserved what Aaron did to me?” Alex laughed bitterly, shaking his head. “Seriously, Mira? You’re asking me that? The same person who told you not to marry him? You ignored me back then, so why care about my opinion now?” I swallowed hard, unable to respond. Alex wasn’t soft-spoken, not even close. He never sugarcoated his words, and I could see that even now, despite my fragile state, he wasn’t going to pretend to be someone he wasn’t. “You’ve always been like this,” he continued, his voice calmer now. “Stubborn. You see only what you want to see, even when the truth is staring you in the face.” I looked away, tears slipping down my cheeks. He wasn’t wrong. “How’s Josh?” I asked, desperate to change the subject, to focus on something—someone—other than my mistakes. Alex’s expression softened slightly. “There’s a family meeting today,” he said. “I’ll make a video of him for you. You’ll see how he’s doing.” Relief washed over me, but it was fleeting. “Thank you,” I murmured. For a while, neither of us spoke. The silence was heavy, filled with unspoken words and lingering regrets. Then I asked the question that had been gnawing at me since I woke up. “Has Aaron said anything else? Anything about Josh?” Alex’s jaw tightened, and his eyes darkened. “I overheard him talking. They’re planning to send Josh to boarding school.” My heart dropped. “Boarding school?” I repeated, my voice rising. Alex nodded grimly. Fury surged through me. “Josh begged me not to even send him to day school!” I cried, my voice breaking. “He’s terrified of being away from home. Aaron promised he wouldn’t, and now—now he wants to ship him off like he’s some burden?” Alex didn’t say anything, just watched me with that same calm, guarded expression. My hands clenched into fists, my whole body trembling. “He’s doing this because I’m not there,” I said, my voice shaking. “Because he thinks he can just replace me with his new fiancée and act like I never existed. But Josh is my son. He’s not a pawn in Aaron’s sick little game.” “You’re right,” Alex said quietly. “But if you want to fight for him, you have to be smart about it. You can’t let your anger cloud your judgment.” I closed my eyes, trying to steady my breathing. Alex was right, but it didn’t make the anger any easier to bear. “I’m going to get my son back,” I said firmly. “No matter what it takes.” Alex affirmed to what was said and he replied. “ i will let you do your thing but be wise and be aware of how cunning Aaron is , If you need help then you can hit me up “Mira’s heart raced as she clutched Josh’s hand tightly, her fingers trembling from fear. The woods were silent except for the occasional rustle of leaves in the breeze. It was cold—too cold—and the night seemed to stretch on endlessly. She looked around, trying to find any sign of help, but the dense trees and thick fog obscured everything beyond a few feet.Josh was quiet beside her, his small frame shivering. He had been through so much already, and now Mira had to protect him, even if it meant risking her own life. She pulled him closer to her, trying to shield him from the chill, but her thoughts kept drifting back to what had happened before they ended up here. Two men had burst into their house, guns pointed at Josh, taking them both against their will. The flashbacks were vivid—Mira had screamed, had fought, but it was useless. They shot two of Alex’s security guards and dragged her and Josh out of the house. Her worst fears had come to life in that instant, and now they were h
Alex’s POVAlex paced around his office, his mind running wild with anxiety and frustration. Mira and Josh were gone, and the more he tried to track them down, the more the trail seemed to fade. His men were searching every inch of the city, every corner of their contacts, but there were no signs of them—no leads, no calls, just complete silence. His fingers tightened around the edge of his desk, the weight of the situation pressing on him harder than anything he had ever experienced.Who would do this? Who would dare take Mira and Josh? The questions rattled through his mind. He had powerful enemies, sure, but none of them would have the audacity to go after his family—his real family, the ones who mattered. And if it was someone who had been watching from the shadows, how did they even know how much Mira meant to him now?Just as his thoughts spiraled deeper into confusion, his phone buzzed sharply, interrupting his frustration. The unknown number that flashed on his screen gave him
Mira’s POVJosh’s cries were the only sound keeping me from losing my mind.He clung to me, his little fingers digging into my arm as he sobbed, his body trembling against mine.“M-mom, I’m scared,” he whimpered, his voice breaking.I swallowed the lump in my throat, forcing myself to be strong. If I broke down now, it would only make things worse.“I know, baby. I know,” I whispered, tightening my grip on him. “But you have to stay calm, okay? No matter what happens, don’t say anything. Don’t cry too loud. Just… just listen to me.”He nodded against my shoulder, sniffling, trying his best to be brave. The men in the front of the car barely paid attention to us, speaking in hushed voices to each other as they drove. I couldn’t see their faces clearly, but their towering frames and rough voices were enough to terrify me.The car smelled like smoke and sweat, and the air was suffocating. My hands were tied behind my back with thick rope, making it impossible to hold Josh properly, but I
Mira’s POVA loud bang shattered the silence. My body froze. That sound—I knew it too well. It was the same sound I heard the night I was attacked years ago. Before I could react, the door burst open, and two hefty men stormed in. My heart slammed against my ribs.Josh.They had guns. And they were pointed straight at him.“Mommy?” Josh whimpered, his little hands gripping his toy car.“No!” I screamed, stepping in front of him. “Please, don’t—”One of the men grabbed me roughly, yanking me backward. Josh shrieked as the other man lifted him off the ground like a sack of rice.“Let go of my son!” I thrashed against my captor, kicking and clawing, but his grip was like iron.“Shut her up,” one of them growled.Something hard slammed against my temple. Pain exploded in my head, and my vision blurred.No. No. No.I felt myself being dragged outside. The cold air hit my skin, but it did nothing to clear the fog in my head. Then I saw them.Alex’s security guards. Two of them. Lying lifele
Mira’s POVThe second I answered the call, a voice on the other end spoke before I could say anything.“I’ve been expecting your call.”I exchanged a quick glance with Alex, who immediately leaned closer, listening intently. My grip tightened around the phone.“Who is this?” I asked cautiously. The man chuckled. “The guy you’ve been searching for.”Alex immediately caught on. He mouthed Aaron’s financial adviser?I kept my voice steady. “You worked for Aaron?”“Yes. And I know everything you want to know,” he said. “But there’s one condition.”I could already guess what was coming.“I need to remain anonymous,” he continued. “No names, no connections, nothing that ties back to me.”I hesitated. This was huge—someone on the inside willing to talk. But could I trust him? What if he was baiting me into a trap?Alex motioned for me to put the call on speaker, and I did.“You don’t want your name involved?” Alex asked. “Then why reach out?”The man sighed. “Because I know what Aaron is cap
Mira’s POVAs we stepped outside, the cold night air was a welcome relief from the suffocating tension inside. I had barely taken a few steps toward the car when I heard someone call my name.“Mira!”I turned just in time to see one of Aaron’s cousins rushing toward me. She was a little out of breath, her eyes darting around as if making sure no one was watching her. Before I could ask what was going on, she slipped a small piece of paper into my hand. “Call him,” she whispered urgently. “He has a lot you’d want to know.”I frowned and looked at the number scribbled on it. “Who is this?”She hesitated, glancing over her shoulder. “Someone who knows things about Aaron. Things you should know.”That caught my attention. “What kind of things?”She shook her head. “I don’t want to get involved. Just call him. And Mira…” She smiled slightly. “I’m happy you got out of that marriage. And that you’re with Alex. He suits you better.”I blinked in surprise. Of all the reactions I had gotten ton
