Scarlett hadn’t planned on going to the party.

In fact, she’d spent most of the day convincing herself not to.

But as evening deepened over Manhattan, the thought of staying home-alone with her thoughts, her doubts, and Grant’s voice still echoing in her head-suddenly felt unbearable.

So she stood before her mirror, fastening the last clasp of her pearl earrings, and whispered to her reflection, “It’s just a party.”

Then again, her reflection had always known when she was lying.

The supermarket was quiet, except for the soft hum of the refrigerators and the faint melody of a jazz tune playing overhead. Scarlett tightened her grip on the shopping trolley, forcing herself to breathe evenly as she walked past the aisles. It was ridiculous that she was even here. She could’ve had one of her bodyguards handle this errand. But she’d insisted- she wanted normal for a day. Ordinary. The kind of day. where she could stroll through a grocery store without feeling the weight of a thousand eyes.Yet here she was, lost between two brands of almond milk, her vision swimming from the rows of identical cartons“You should go for the blue one,” a voice said from behind her - light, confident, and oddly familiar. “It’s creamier. Less watery than the other.”Scarlett turned. The woman who stood there was perhaps in her mid-twenties, all golden hair and soft amber eyes. She was dressed in casual elegance -a beige knit sweater, jeans that fit too well, and a delicate perfume tha

Rain whispered against the rusted roof of the abandoned warehouse, soft at first, then harder -like impatient fingers drumming against tin. The sound bled through cracked windows and crooked beams, filling the silence that hung thick and stale. The sound of dripping water echoed through the hollow space.A woman’s hand appeared in the dimness- slender, trembling slightly as it pinned another photograph to the wall. The glossy image caught the light: Scarlett Monroe.Perfect smile. Diamond earrings. Headlines blaring across the bottom.‘The Billionaire Heiress Returns.’Somewhere deep in the forgotten part of Manhattan, a single light bulb swung from the ceiling, flickering on and off -each flash revealing fragments of obsession.A wall - covered.Photo after photo of Scarlett Monroe.Scarlett stepping out of her car. Scarlett at a business gala. Scarlett with Cassian. Scarlett at the funeral. Each image was connected by thin red strings, webbed together in a pattern that made no sens

Scarlett shut the door behind her and leaned against it for a moment, eyes closed. The silence of her home pressed around her - soft, expensive, empty. For the first time that night, she let herself breathe. She missed Canada. Missed the quiet hum of her villa tucked between the pines. She missed her son,the sound of hi laughter echoing through the hallways. There, she wasn’t “Scarlett Monroe Ashbourne,” or the woman everyone whispered about - she was just his mother. And in that simplicity, she’d found a peace she realized she’d been starving for.Her heels echoed faintly as she walked toward the living room, but every step felt heavier than the last. Each one pulled her further from that warmth - the life she’d built far from the Ashbournes, from Cassian’s plans, from all of it.She poured herself a glass of wine, not because she wanted it, but because her hands wouldn’t stop trembling. The night replayed itself whether she wanted it to or not.Cassian’s voice. The porch light. The

Grant stood there, frozen, long after Scarlett and Cassian had left. The echo of her scent still hung in the air - that soft trace of jasmine that he hadn’t smelled in years. He’d almost touched her. Almost said her name the way he used to.And then Cassian had appeared, cutting through the moment like a clean, deliberate blade. He raked a hand through his hair, trying to steady himself. But no matter how deep he breathed, the ache in his chest wouldn’t fade. When he finally turned back toward the ballroom, the noise hit him all at once -laughter, music, the murmur of people moving too close. He felt out of place, like a man walking through someone else’s life.“Grant?”He stopped. Diane was standing near the bar, her champagne glass in hand, eyes narrowed in that way women looked when they already knew the answer.“You disappeared,” she said softly. “I was beginning to think I’d been ditched.”Ditched. I never even asked you to come, my mother should answer to that since she loves gl

She was kind to me when she didn’t have to be.”“Kindness,” Cassian said dryly, “is how most disasters begin.”Scarlett arched her brow. “Then it’s a good thing I brought my favorite disaster with me.”He chuckled. “Touché.”The Langfords’ pen

It was the second time Scarlett had been back to the Ashbourne Tower in five years, but the smell was the same -rich mahogany, cold air-conditioning, and a faint trace of Grant’s cologne that seemed to haunt every hallway. She told herself she didn’t feel anything. Not the sting in her throat, not the way her pulse kicked when the elevator doors slid open to the top floor. But the lie barely lasted five seconds. The entire board was already waiting when she stepped in-suits and silence. And at the far end of the table stood Grant. He looked older, still undeniably handsome. Sharper around the edges, but tired in the eyes. His tie was perfect, of course, but his jaw was clenched the way it always was when he was pretending to be composed.Their eyes met, and for a heartbeat, the world went quiet.“Scarlett,” he said finally - her name rolling off his tongue like it had weight, like it still belonged to him.“Mr. Ashbourne,” she replied smoothly. She faced Christine “Mrs. Ashbourne.”Ch
