Chapter 2

Autor: Iris Cyan
Watching Michelle’s face grow paler and paler, I continued:

“If I could turn back time, I truly wish I hadn’t been the one to save you that day!”

Stung by my words, Michelle stumbled back a few steps, unable to hold back the trickling tears.

“Enough! Haven’t we treated you well enough all this time?”

I froze, but Sean began his list of benevolence.

“Do you have any idea? That time you were having period cramps, I left Michelle, who had just had a miscarriage, to be with you!

“When I saw you that day, I wished so badly that you would just die, that you had never existed in my life!”

Stunned by the sheer hatred in his eyes, I backed up a few steps.

As if he had completely snapped, Sean continued coldly:

“And one more thing. Can you stop bringing up your heroic act?

“Even without you that day, someone else would have saved her. You just happened to be passing by. Stop taking yourself for Christ, would you?

“It was all God’s will. How much longer do you expect Michelle to keep paying you back for that tiny favor?

“Please, leave us alone. We’re in love. Stop clinging to me like an abandoned dog!”

Michelle tried to hold him back, speaking to me gently:

“Emma, we really didn’t want to hurt you. We wanted to break it to you eventually, but...”

Listening to their high-sounding, hypocritical nonsense, a wave of nausea surged up my throat.

“You didn’t want to hurt me? So on Thanksgiving, you stood me up and married my former best friend?”

I pointed at Michelle’s wedding dress, laughing at the sheer absurdity.

“Sean, don’t make yourself sound so grand. You’re just a coward. That’s why you kept her as your side bitch all this time!”

Sean’s face darkened instantly. He pulled a marriage certificate from his suit inner pocket and stuffed it in my face.

“Watch your filthy mouth. Who’s the side bitch here?”

I looked at the registration date on the marriage certificate, my face stunned out of expression.

October 17th of last year.

My birthday.

He told me he had to work out of town for three days, to save up money for a gift.

Turned out he was standing in line at the county clerk’s office, getting a marriage license with another woman.

Meanwhile, I sat home alone, cooking a birthday meal for myself, foolishly saving half of it for him.

I threw the marriage certificate right back at him, my eyes dead cold.

Just then, the friends around us gathered round to smooth things over.

“Emma, Sean’s been more than fair to you. Three years of that must be enough. Why don’t you just walk away now as if nothing ever happened?”

“Exactly, they kept it secret for three years for your sake. I mean with your background, three years being Sean’s girlfriend is not a bad deal at all.”

Sean raised an eyebrow at me, his tone dripping with condescending charity:

“I’m sure you can read. Michelle was never the side dish—you were.”

Michelle too stepped forward to take my hand, her tone gentle:

“Emma, stop making a scene. Just go home and pretend nothing ever happened. It’s better for us all.”

I clenched my fists so tightly my fingernails dug deep into my palms, yet I couldn’t help but laugh out loud.

“Fine then, I’ll stop making a scene. But since I’m already here, naturally I have to leave you two a wedding gift before I go.”

Just as I spoke, one of his friends suddenly blurted out:

“Sean! You’re trending!”

Sean’s expression changed sharply as he grabbed the phone to check.

“#CheatingScandalatFamedMedicalProfessor’sWedding”

The hashtag had shot straight into the top ten.

The attached photo was a high-resolution shot taken at the wedding venue just moments ago.

The comment section had already exploded.

Sean snapped his head up to glare at me, his eyes blazing with fury.

“Are you out of your mind?”

I met his gaze calmly, lightly waving my phone at him.

“You guys love playing games, don’t you? Guess what? The game has only just begun.”

I looked at the itinerary and transfer records, the corners of my lips curling into an icy arc.“Let’s sabotage her plan then. The woman loves to act. Time to bring the curtain down.”I gathered up the entire chain of evidence on my computer and sent it to Josh. After glancing over the materials, he blew a whistle.“Ruthless, aren’t you? Guess her days of playing the victim are over.”“Please release everything before she boards her flight.”“My pleasure.”Two days later, on the morning Michelle headed to the airport, all platforms under Josh’s agency simultaneously released a detailed breakdown titled “Deep Dive Into a Three-Year Scam: Who Was the Real Mastermind?”Paired with a meticulously edited timeline video, it instantly detonated across online spaces, landing at the number one spot in trending topics. In the video, Michelle’s voice was crystal clear:“Tell her you’re balancing a ledger. Anything over thirty-five bucks, say you’re on a business trip. The woman’s desperate for yo

I put my phone down, gazing out the window at the darkening sky.“Let her put out the effort. The higher she climbs, the harder and more painful her fall will be. What I want is a single, fatal blow.”Early next morning, I accompanied my father to the hospital for his final, comprehensive pre-op checkup. The new lead surgeon, Dr. Watson, was a middle-aged man in his fifties, wearing gold-rimmed glasses. His voice was slow and deliberate, sympathetic but professional.“Ms. Ford, please rest assured. I have carefully reviewed your father’s condition. Although the coronary artery blockage is in a tricky location, it remains within a controllable range. The surgery has a high success rate, and with proper post-op recovery, it won’t affect his quality of life.”My heart, which had been hanging in suspense for so long, finally settled back into place.I was grateful for this new surgeon.“Thank you, doctor. I trust you with my dad’s life.”As my father was led away by the nurse to draw blood

The face that once made my heart flutter now only filled me with disgust.I pressed the intercom button.“Sean, you’re wasting your time here.“The ones you should be saying sorry to are the patients you’ve screwed over.“And all the families whose money you took, only to botch their loved ones’ treatments.“Not me.He snapped his head up, a flash of venomous malice darting through his eyes.“Are you hell bent on destroying me?”“You had it coming.”I hung up the intercom and called the police.Ten minutes later, a police car took him away.On his log were causing public disorder, public intoxication, and a restraining order from me.He would be staying inside for at least a few days. The next morning, I began clearing out my old belongings. The suitcase Sean had left at my place was something I had yet to throw out.As I unzipped the inner compartment, an old phone fell out.I plugged it to a charger and powered it on.The photo gallery was packed with new evidence.Flirty chat logs b

Early the next morning, the doorbell rang.Looking through the peephole, I saw Michelle’s parents standing outside the door. Her mother’s eyes were red and swollen. She looked as if she had suffered a monumental grievance. Her father, on the other hand, was full of fury.Seeing that I wasn’t opening, they began kicking at my door.“Come out here! You brought ruin on my daughter. Show your face!”I let out a scoff and pulled the door open. The moment Michelle’s mother saw me, she lunged forward, only to be blocked by Josh’s bodyguards.“Ma’am, say what you need to say, but keep your hands to yourself.”“How dare you say those things online?”Michelle’s mother shrieked at me, on the verge of total breakdown.“You ruined Michelle’s life! She was your best friend!”“Best friend?”I scoffed at her cold-heartedly.“Who got a married to my boyfriend on my birthday?”The woman choked on her words for a second.“You vicious, wicked wretch! You couldn’t keep your own man. How is that my poor gir

I displayed Sean’s ledger with his rules on it for everyone to see.“A maximum of thirty-five bucks per meal. What kinda bizarre relationship rule is that?”“Wanna learn how to start a fight? Look nowhere else. Just study this scumbag’s chat logs!”Witnessing the anticipated effect, the corners of my lips curved upward, and I went on to play a secretly recorded footage.Next second, Michelle’s hushed voice could be heard through the live stream:“Sean, I thought you got things under control!”The comments were still billowing in.But now, abusive demands for the “crazy bitch” to “get lost” had vanished. In their place was a screen full of question marks.“What’s going on here? Spill all the tea!”There remained a few trolls brought in by Sean to steer the narrative.“Don’t listen to a word of hers. That thing gotta be fake.“One time I was hospitalized with a serious illness. The treatment fees were massive, and I was ready to offer my life up to God. But Dr. Barnes came to my house du

Sean reached out his hand, ready to grab me, but I twisted away to avoid him.Fuming with anger, he barked, “Do you really have to make such an ugly scene out of this?“If you clear all this up right now, I can pretend none of this ever happened.“I can loosen up on balancing our ledger, but you can’t interfere with my relationship with Michelle.“You have my word. Things can still go back to how they used to be.”Outraged to the point of laughter, I barked back coldly:“Not a chance!“What, you don’t like my wedding gift? Now the whole world knows you’re married—isn’t that wonderful?”Before my words even faded, a massive crowd of reporters swarmed into the hotel.Camera flashes clicked furiously right in Sean’s and Michelle’s faces.“Dr. Barnes, is it true you were dating two women at the same time?”“Ms. Hudson, you were dating a taken man?”Michelle screamed, burying herself into Sean’s arms.Sean shielded her, trying to retreat toward the back door, but they were completely blocke
