MasukAria's POV
In the morning it was a different story.
I woke up to find his side of the bed empty and the sound of his voice coming from the study down the hall, low and clipped in a way that meant the call had started badly and wasn't improving. I lay there for a moment listening to the tone of it without being able to make out the words.
Aria's POVChen did lecture us about nutrition. For approximately four minutes while he served what turned out to be a very good chicken and vegetable soup, he explained in calm but firm terms that the human body could not sustain itself on coffee and toast and occasional lamb chops, regardless of how busy the schedule was.Lucien listened with the expression of a man enduring something he knew he deserved."He's right," I said."Don't encourage him," Lucien said."I'm always right," Chen said, sitting down with his own bowl. "You're both welcome."We ate. It was comfortable and warm and ordinary in the best possible way. Lucien asked Che
Aria's POVThe meeting wrapped up at twelve thirty. The investor communication strategy got approved, Gerald Portman asked three sharp questions that I answered before the legal team could, and Howard Briggs said nothing else for the remainder of the session. By the end, the energy in the room had shifted from cautious to something closer to steady. As people filed out, Sandra stopped beside me."That was a good read on the filing," she said quietly. Not effusive, just direct. The kind of compliment that meant something because it wasn't trying to mean too much."Thank you," I said. She nodded and left.Gerald was the last one out. He paused at the door and looked back at Lucien. "Smart wo
Aria's POVI called Carol Webb at eight o'clock exactly. She picked up on the third ring, slightly out of breath, which meant she'd just gotten back from the dog walk. I introduced myself simply, just Aria Blackwood, Lucien's wife, calling personally because I wanted her to hear directly from us rather than through the news cycle. She was guarded for the first two minutes. Polite but careful, the way people are when they're waiting to find out what you actually want. I didn't rush it. I asked about the project timeline, acknowledged the injunction straightforwardly without making it dramatic, and told her exactly what I'd told Lucien I would. Personal grievance, procedural noise, substance of the agreement unchanged. There was a pause after that.

I lay there for a moment listening to the tone of it without being able to make out the words.I checked the time. 6:14.I got up.~~~He was at his desk in yesterday's shirt, which meant he'd either slept very little or not at all. There were three empty coffee cups lined up on the edge of the desk like a small, depressing monument. He saw me in the doorway and held up one finger without breaking the call.I went to the kitchen, made a
Aria's POV"Yes," he said quietly. "You are."We stayed like that for a bit. The city outside kept going. The phone on his desk buzzed twice and he ignored it both times, which was practically a miracle."Victor's going to find out about Emma today," I said into his chest. "When his Nevada move falls through.""I know," he said."He's going to be angry," I said."Good," Lucien said. "Angry people make mistakes.""So do people who feel like they're winning," I said.He pulled back slightly to look at me. "Meaning?""Meaning don't get comfortable," I said. "Emma was one source. If he's been at this for two years
Aria's POVI stayed close. Not in the room, that was Lucien's to handle and I had enough sense to know it. But I stayed in the kitchen just down the hall, close enough that if anything went sideways I was there.Chen sat with me. He didn't say much, just made himself a coffee and leaned against the counter the way he did when he was keeping watch without making it obvious. I appreciated that about Chen. He never made a performance out of anything. The conversation in the study lasted twenty three minutes. I knew because I was watching the clock on the microwave without meaning to.When Emma came out, I heard her heels in the hallway. I didn't look up from the cup I was pretending t
Aria's POVHe let out a short, dry chuckle, a genuine sound of amusement that reached his eyes. "I probably did. But luckily, I don't have to worry about high school anymore. I just have to worry about you."As we drove through the massive iron gates, I looked back at the mansion on
Aria's POVI quietly shook off the skeptism slowly rising in my heart.~~~The morning sun hit the glass walls of the medical suite with a cold, unforgiving brightness. I sa
Aria's POVI headed for the library. I didn't need a nurse, a guard, or a confession. I had the only weapon that mattered, my own mind. And I was going to use it to bring out every truth he was hiding. The heavy oak doors of the library clicked shut behind me, sealing out the
Aria's POVLucien was still standing by the darkened television, his silhouette cast in jagged red by the emergency lights. He looked like a king standing amidst the ruins of his palace. His chest was heaving, his hand still white-knuckled around the grip of his gun."Lucien?" I
