Cassie's POV

I caught the faintest smile tug at Ledger’s lips. Like maybe… he liked that I was his. Even if it was just for show. Or maybe… it wasn’t just for show anymore, judging by our near-kiss.

I thought we would have gotten whatever sexual tension we had between us out of our system on day one, but the fact that things seemed to sizzle between meant there was more.

Ledger took my hand in his as we walked inside. He grinned before leaning closer to whisper in my ear. “Relax, Monroe. You look ready to flee.”

“Well, forgive me for being traumatized since the last party I attended. Not exactly dying to repeat that performance.” I muttered, arms crossed against my chest.

I wasn’t trying to sound dramatic, but the memory still made my stomach twist.

His expression turned somber. “You're right. I should have considered that. But…” He stopped walking, facing me instead. He lifted our linked hands to his mouth and kissed the back of my hand softly.
