Author’s POV

Ledger knew he was being unreasonable. Deep down, he knew that. Yet he could not stop his mood from souring at the memory of Cassie laughing with Freddie.

Her face had lit up, her laughter easy, too easy. It played in his head more times than he could count on the short walk away from the party.

Cassie frowned. “Where are you going?” She called after Ledger.

“Home.”

She blinked, clearly thrown off. “What? Why?”

“This party sucks.” He shot back.

He did not stop walking. He did not even glance back.

“You were laughing just a couple minutes ago.”

Ledger gave no response.

“Is this about Freddie?”

Nothing.

He unlocked the car and climbed in. Cassie, realizing Ledger was about to drive off, got in as well. “We're fully grown adults, Rivers. Let's just talk about this.”

Ledger gripped the steering wheel. “I need to think. Get out of the car or I'm going to drive home with you in it.” His tone was clipped. There was no teasing smile whatsoever.

This was new to Cassie.

  • Fake Dating With The Playboy hockey Captain   Chapter 72

Author's POV Ledger had done his best to avoid Cassie for the rest of the day. She had asked for space, yes, but part of him didn’t want her to see him like this, in the aftermath. Not after the suspension. Not when everything was falling apart. He headed straight for the parking lot as soon as his final lecture ended. As he walked to his powerbike, he spotted a group of girls at the side leering lustfully at him. “Nice bike, Ledger. Why don't you take me for a ride?” She asked suggestively. The innuendo was not lost on him.The old Ledger would have smirked and fired back something twice as flirty. He probably would’ve given her his number and taken her back to that apartment he liked to use in the hotel’s residential wing. The same place that had recorded he and Cassie's intimacy. He thought in annoyance.Ledger got onto his bike and zoomed off without a word.***There was no sign of Ledger.Cassie had already checked the rink, the gym, the locker room hallway, even the spot behi

Cassie's POV I hadn’t even stepped fully onto the rink before I felt eyes on me.Some players didn’t even bother to hide those disgusting, prolonged stares that scraped across my skin like a dare. A few nudged each other, whispered too loud, and laughed too easily. I ignored them. I wasn’t here for them.I'd already set my mind to just do all that I had to do and end the day quietly. From the center of the ice, Zeke snapped at them. “Cut it out.”His voice wasn’t loud, but it was firm enough and that was all it took. The looks dropped and conversations shifted back to normal.I gave him a small smile in thanks and continued to the bleachers. As I climbed, I found myself scanning the ice, looking for him.But Ledger wasn’t there.I didn’t see him on the benches. Didn’t hear his voice barking out orders or tossing around sarcasm mid-practice. It was too quiet without him and it made the air feel heavier.“Looking for Rivers?” Zeke asked, stepping up beside me.I didn’t answer right awa

Ledger's POV Cassie looked back at me. “Who posted it?”“I don’t know exactly,” I said, wondering if I sounded as desperate as I felt. “But Freddie had a copy. He threatened me with it earlier today.”Her eyes narrowed. “What?”I nodded grimly. “He told me to break up with you or he would post it. But he gave me three days to do so.”Alison frowned. “I wonder why he changed his mind.”I didn't care about the why. I only cared about the fact that he had done so, without considering our friendship and without any regard for Cassie. She didn’t respond. Not immediately.I stepped closer. “Please just… give me a chance to explain everything. Not here. Not now. But later.” I ran a hand through my hair. “Just… don’t walk away yet.”Her eyes softened. But it disappeared just as quickly. She nodded once. “I hear you. I don't think it's your fault. Not really. I just…” Her voice cracked. “The whole thing is out there. I couldn't even watch the video, it…”Her words faltered.“I'll get it take

Author's POVLedger barely touched his food. He just sat there teasing the food with his fork. His mind was elsewhere the whole time, far from the meal and the people present.Everyone had noticed that something was off with the atmosphere, but it took them a minute to realize that it was because of Ledger. He’d barely spoken since dinner started. No smart remarks. No teasing. Not even a tired smile.“Ledger?” Cassie called out, placing her spoon back on the plate. He didn’t react.“Ledger,” Alison tried, sharper this time. That made him blink.“Yeah?”Cassie frowned, her concern apparent. “You’ve been quiet. Is everything alright?” She asked softly. He blinked like he hadn’t heard the question. “Yeah,” he said a beat too late. “Fine.”Cassie didn’t buy it. Alison didn’t either. The tension in his jaw. The way his gaze never settled. Something was wrong.“You sure?” Alison pressed gently.Ledger gave her a quick nod, almost too quick. “Just tired. Long day.”Alison raised a brow but d

Author's POV Otto wasn’t headed anywhere in particular at first. But as his footsteps carried him across the campus, he found himself walking toward the rink.He needed space. Noise. A cold surface under his skates. It had always helped him think. Then his mind shifted back to his conversation with Cassie. She'd had a look of disgust on her face. Disgust. It was more than anger. Anger could be worked through. But disgust? That kind of reaction stuck.Maybe he deserved it. Maybe not. He'd gone there hoping for something. A second chance, maybe. Even just a softening of her tone. But what he got instead was rejection, brutal and clean. She had shut him out. Left him there on the ground like he was nothing. He needed to clear his head.Without thinking too much about it, Otto made his way to the training rink. The ice always helped. It was where he could shut out the noise, the pressure, the regrets. Everything melted away once his skates hit the ice.But the moment he stepped inside

067Author's POVLedger was Freddie's best friend, and had been for years. However… Tucked under team loyalty. Buried beneath shared victories and sweaty locker room jokes… was a resentment towards Ledger. Yes, even best friends had blind spots. And lately, Ledger had been rubbing right up against every one of Freddie’s.He hadn’t always felt this way.It started with position.Freddie had joined the team as a Center—the very heart of playmaking. The role he trained for, obsessed over. But then came Ledger Rivers. Fast. Smart. Flashy. A natural Center if there ever was one. The coaches had barely blinked before bumping Freddie to right defense. “You’re solid back there, Fred,” they said. “Play to your strengths.”Right. Strengths. More like compromise. He’d taken it with a straight face. Told himself it didn’t matter. He was still on the team, still part of the strategy. But part of him, an ugly, quiet part, hated that he had to take a backseat because Ledger walked into every room l
