The sun was setting, casting long shadows across the bedroom floor. Lauren stood by the window, her arms wrapped tightly around her stomach.

She was waiting for Colt. She had been waiting all day. He hadn’t even come to her room before he left that morning. “Maybe he was already tired of her,” she thought bitterly.

“Maybe he’s just busy,” she whispered to the empty room. But a darker voice in her head answered. Maybe he’s realized you aren't worth the trouble.

Her phone buzzed on the bed. The sudden sound made her jump, her heart leaping into her throat. She walked to the bed and picked it up, her fingers fumbling with the screen.

It was a message from a number she didn't recognize.

She tapped it open. Her forehead creased as the image began to load. When the picture finally appeared, the room seemed to tilt. Her breath left her lungs in one sharp, broken pull, as if she had been punched from the inside. Her fingers went numb, and the phone almost slipped from her hand.

It was Colt.

Madison’s bedroom was soft and dark as heavy curtains blocked out the dying light of the evening. The air smelled of her perfume, jasmine, and something sharper.Colt lay sprawled across the king-sized bed, his breathing heavy and drugged. His face, usually sharp and alert, was slack, innocent in its oblivion. She watched him for a long moment, her heart thrumming with a cold thrill of victory, like a hunter who had finally cornered her prey. She felt powerful and untouchable. Her eyes raked over him, tracing the lines of his expensive shirt and trousers. He was hers to unwrap.Kneeling beside him, Madison reached out with her manicured nails, painted a deep, blood-red, and trailed them lightly up his leg. The fabric of his trousers was smooth under her touch, but she could feel the warmth of his skin beneath.Slowly, she dragged her fingers higher, over the firm muscle of his thigh, inching toward the zipper. The room was so quiet she could hear her own breath quicken. Her hand pause

Colt’s body slumped deeper into the chair, his head lolling to the side.Madison stood still for a moment, watching him. Then, a slow, dark smile spread across her face.“Checkmate,” she whispered. She walked over to him, her heels clicking softly. She stopped right in front of him and reached out, using one finger to tilt his head back. His eyes were closed, and his breathing was heavy.“You were always too kind for your own good, Colt,” she mocked, her voice a sharp contrast to the sobbing mess she had been five minutes earlier. “You see a girl crying, and you just have to save her. It’s your biggest flaw. And today, it’s the reason I win.”She had been planning this the moment she heard he was at her father’s office. Her father’s secretary, a woman she paid three times her salary to keep an eye out for her, had texted her the second Colt walked through the door. Her father had no idea that his secretary was on her payroll, too.The moment she saw Colt in that office, sitting there

Colt sprinted out of the Baker Global building. He arrived at the car park just in time to see the taillights of Madison’s red sports car speeding around the corner. She was driving like a lunatic, weaving through cars without a care for anyone else.“Shit!” he hissed, scrambling into his own car and jamming the key into the ignition. The engine roared to life, and he peeled out of the parking lot, his tires chirping against the asphalt, his jaw clenched as he kept his eyes fixed on her taillights. “Why does she always do this?” he snapped, hitting the steering wheel with his palm. He didn't want to be chasing a woman who had just threatened to end her life. But then he saw Grant’s face in his mind. The man had looked pale, aged by a decade in a single second. Grant had been like a father to him after his own was gone. He couldn't let the man’s only daughter drive onto a bridge because of a mess he helped create.“Pick up, Madison! Pick up!” Colt roared, pressing the speakerphone but

“Madison!” Grant’s voice boomed. He slammed his palms onto the mahogany desk and shoved his chair back so hard the wheels screeched against the floor. “What the hell are you doing here? This is a private meeting!”Madison didn’t flinch. She walked farther into the office as if she owned it, her heels clicking sharply against the floor. She moved around the desk and stopped beside her father, close enough to touch him.“Daddy,” she said, her voice dropping into a sweet purr. She looked up at him with wide, fake-innocent eyes. “I came to make sure you weren't letting this... this traitor talk you into another mistake.”Grant looked down at her, his jaw working so hard a vein throbbed in his temple. “How did you even know he was here, Madison? I told my staff no interruptions.”Madison let out a sharp, mocking laugh and rolled her eyes. “Please. Do you really think I’d let my future husband sneak into your office without me knowing?”Grant’s face hardened. “Are you spying on me in my own

Colt slid into his car and slammed the door. He couldn't start the engine. He just sat there, his hands white-knuckled as he gripped the steering wheel.Logan’s building loomed in front of him. That meeting was supposed to be his salvation. Instead, he’d walked right into a trap set by the man Lauren had once loved. He leaned his head back against the headrest and closed his eyes. His chest felt hollow, like someone had reached inside and ripped out his heart, leaving nothing but a cold, aching hole.If he had known. If he had known the CEO was her ex-fiancé, he never would have walked in with a smile on his face. He felt like a fool, a desperate, blind one.He exhaled roughly and rubbed his face. His phone lay silent on the passenger seat, heavy with options he did not want to touch. But there was one last thing he had been avoiding doing.Colt picked up the phone. His thumb hovered as he scrolled through his contact list, his heartbeat thudding in his ears. Grant Baker’s name stare
