Chapter Five: Fault Lines

The air had shifted.

Elena could feel it the moment she stepped into the coffee shop that afternoon. The same one where she’d first seen Adrian again, where the storm inside her had started to rise. Now it was quiet, humming with background conversations and espresso machines, but beneath it all was a new kind of tension.

She saw her before she even reached the counter.

Hailey Matthews.

Blonde. Immaculately dressed in a cream sweater and tailored jeans. She was sipping a latte at a corner table like she owned the place. Like she’d been waiting.

Elena almost turned around and walked out. But she didn’t.

Instead, she walked up to the counter, ordered a tea she wouldn’t drink, and pretended not to notice the way Hailey stood and walked straight toward her.

“Elena.”

Elena turned slowly. “Hailey.”

Hailey gave her a smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes. “I thought it might be time we talked.”
