The house was too quiet.

I stood in the foyer, my back pressed against the closed door, listening to the silence. My parents' car had long since disappeared down the driveway. The staff had been given the week off—Mom's idea, something about giving me "space and independence."

If only she knew.

I pushed off the door and walked through the empty rooms. The living room. The kitchen. The study where Dad spent most of his evenings. Everything looked the same. Everything felt different.

I was alone.

  • Falling for My Dad's Best Friend    Chapter 30

The first thing I noticed when we arrived in Ibiza was the weather. The second was how beautiful everything looked.Even from the car, I could see the coastline stretching into the distance, the sparkling blue water and rows of palm trees lining the roads. The sun was brighter than what I was used to, and for the first time in days, I found myself genuinely looking forward to something."Beautiful, isn't it?" Mum asked from beside me.I leaned closer to the window."Very.""Wait until you see the hotel."I turned towards her. "You've been here before?""Once, a few years ago, with your father. We had a wonderful time, although he spent most of it trying to convince me that he could cook better than the hotel chef."I laughed."Please tell me you didn't let him near the kitchen.""Unfortunately, I did. Your father is very confident in his abilities.""That's a polite way of saying he's terrible."She burst out laughing. The drive continued for another fifteen minutes before the car fin

Lucien: How are you?I stared at the message before replying.Me: I'm okay. His response came almost immediately.Lucien: That's not convincing.I sighed.Me: I'm fine, Lucien.Lucien: You don't have to keep saying that.I sat on the edge of the bed. There was something frustrating about how easily he could tell when I wasn't being honest.Me: My mum is going to Ibiza next week. She's attending a conference and wants me to come with her. This time, his reply took longer.Lucien: When?Me: Tuesday.Lucien: For how long?Me: Four days. I'll be back Sunday.Lucien: Okay.I stared at the screen. That was it?Just okay?I knew I shouldn't have expected him to argue or demand that I stay, but something about his response still bothered me.Me: You don't have anything to say?Lucien: Would you like me to tell you not to go?Me: I don't know.Lucien: BellaMe: What?Lucien: If you need a few days away, take them.I read the message twice.Me: You're not bothered?Lucien: I'm not particularly

I didn't sleep.I tried. God knows I tried. I turned off the bedside lamp, pulled the duvet over my shoulders and closed my eyes, but every time I drifted off, something brought me straight back.Fiona's voice. Her words. The casual way she'd said it, as though she were telling me something insignificant. Two women before me.Two women who had stood in that same corner, picking out blindfolds, being taught things I was only just beginning to understand. And the worst part was that she hadn't even seemed particularly bothered by it.You replace them fast.I rolled onto my side and stared at the empty space beside me.Lucien had never made me feel like I was competing with anyone. At least, not until now. He had a way of making everything feel intentional, from the smallest things he did to the way he looked at me when he thought I wasn't paying attention. But how much of that was real?Had he treated the others the same way? Had he made them feel special too? Had they also believed the

I woke up to the smell of coffee and sunlight filtering through the curtains. Lucien was already dressed. He sat in the armchair beside the window, wearing dark trousers and a white shirt with the sleeves rolled up. A cup of coffee rested in his hand, and his eyes were fixed on me. "How long have you been awake?" "A while." I narrowed my eyes. "That's creepy." He chuckled softly. "Perhaps." I stretched beneath the sheets, then immediately regretted it when I felt the soreness in my body. My cheeks warmed as memories of the previous night came rushing back. "What time is it?" "Nine." "On a Saturday? That's practically a crime." "Agreed." He placed his coffee on the small table and walked over, settling on the edge of the bed. "I've been thinking about something." I glanced at him. "Should I be worried?" "About what you said last night." My expression softened slightly. "Which part?" "Your request for me to teach you." My stomach fluttered. I hadn't expected him to brin

The bedroom was dim, lit only by the lamp on the nightstand. He closed the door, and the click of it felt final. Like the world outside had been shut out. I sat on the edge of the bed. He stayed standing. "Lucien?" He was looking at me. Not the way he usually did. There was something raw in it. Something almost angry. "I've been trying to get you out of my head," he said. The room felt very quiet. "Nothing works," he said. "You're the only thing in my head, Bella. The only thing." I opened my mouth. He didn't let me finish. He crossed the room, took my face in his hands, and kissed me. It wasn't gentle. It wasn't careful. It was the kiss of a man who'd run out of patience — hands in my hair, pulling me into him, backing me against the headboard until I had nowhere to go. I made a sound against his mouth and he swallowed it. "I hate how much I want you," he murmured against my lips. "You don't hate it." "No." He kissed along my jaw. "But I should." His hands slid down my

The lie came out easier than it should have."Violet called," I said, standing in the kitchen doorway with my phone in my hand. "She wants me to stay with her this weekend. Kind of a girls' thing."My mother looked up from the tea she was making. My father looked up from the newspaper."Violet?" my mother repeated. "Violet Marsh?""Yeah."There was a pause."I thought you two weren't speaking," my father said. "Didn't she—" He stopped, glancing at my mother. "You know. That thing."The thing. The thing was two years ago. Violet and I had been best friends since we were twelve. Then, the summer before my senior year of high school, she'd done something that ended it. She'd told everyone something I'd trusted her with. Something private. Something that spread through the whole school before I even knew it had happened.I hadn't spoken to her since."We ran into each other a few weeks ago," I said. "At a coffee shop. She apologized. We've been talking a little since."My mother frowned.
