LOGINThey say be careful what you wish for. I, Sofia Ross, wished for a young, hot billionaire husband. Instead, I got a seventy-year-old wrinkled man with a potbelly, seven ex-wives, and every single thing I had ever prayed against. Just when I thought there was no escaping my fate, the devil himself came to my rescue. A billionaire. A brooding devil in an expensive suit. The world’s wet dream. I should have walked away. Instead, I took the devil’s hand and let him save me. I didn’t know he was about to show me exactly why they called him a brooding devil. Because the moment I took his hand, I started wishing I had stayed with my seventy-year-old husband instead. Especially when I realized the devil who came to save me was already married.

I’ve always known my fate as a Ross. One day, I would marry a man thrice my age, with a huge potbelly, kept in his house while I cook and take care of him till he withers away. And as someone who doesn’t believe in love? I don’t mind. But I just thought I had five more years, until my mother walked into my room.
My father believed it’s a good thing to do for his children. He did the same with my elder sister, Chloe, four years ago.
I love my father. I really do, but he makes shitty decisions when it comes to our love lives. I just want to be single forever.
“Your father has found the perfect husband for you, Sofia,” my mother said calmly, holding my hands with a look that could pass as pity no matter how much she tried to hide it.
“I just turned twenty, Mother, and he couldn’t wait a bit?” I blurted out. “Last time I checked, I haven’t even slept with a man, the last guy who tried to kiss me, Dad broke his hand, and now you think it’s okay to get married to a man who’s probably going to turn me into a sex doll?”
My mother gasped, but internally, I rolled my eyes at her shock. Deep down, I knew it was time. My elder sister got married when she turned twenty as well—to a man thrice her age at that.
“Come on, Sofia. You know it’s the Ross tradition to secure a standard man in society. We have a name and we have to live up to it, hence why your father thinks this man is the perfect match for you.”
Of course. It’s always about the Ross family name. As much as I love my dad, his obsession with validation from society is ridiculous.
I can’t get married. Just thinking about it was making my head throb. I have a lot of dreams and things I want to try. But now, I’m getting married.
What if he hits me? Worse—what if he doesn’t buy me designer clothes like my father does?
The thought of being caged made me want to run. But running was pointless. It’s my fate.
“Is he a good man?” I asked, swallowing the lump in my throat.
Mum let go of my hand, her fingers settling on my hair, tucking a strand of my blonde hair to the back.
“Yes, darling. Your father said your husband will take care of you. He also said he’s very rich.”
The word husband made me wince. It was getting more ridiculous thinking about it.
He better be nice, or else he’s gonna have a lot to work with.
“Hope he doesn’t have a potbelly? Is he old? Please, I don’t want him to be old—Chloe’s husband can barely walk.”
My mum let out a soft laugh. A laugh that sounded so rich and polished. Everything about dear mother oozed high-society elegance. She’s everything a woman could be. And she’s such a dutiful wife.
I can’t be dutiful.
“He doesn’t have a potbelly, and I’m not entirely sure about his age.”
Okay. That was confusing.
“Who’s the man?” I asked, my brow furrowing. At least it’s only fair I know who I’m getting married to.
My mum went quiet. Her fingers smoothed an invisible crease on my bedsheet before she finally looked up.
"Mum?" I pressed.
She forced a smile, but it didn't quite reach her eyes. "Actually... your father thinks it's best if you don't know until the wedding day."
She looked away the moment the words left her mouth.
My nose flared in anger, and I stood up from my bed abruptly. “What the hell is that supposed to mean?”
“Language, Sofia!” she warned.
Oh, please.
“Why can’t I know who my husband is till the wedding day? Does that mean I can’t even know him before then? Go out on a date with him? I’m just supposed to appear on the wedding day?” I bit out harshly, barely able to keep my cool.
“Like I said, Sofia, your father thinks it’s best to wait till your wedding day, but trust me, he’s a good man and he’s the perfect fit for you.”
He’s a good man. He’s the perfect fit.
“Is he that perfect you couldn’t give me a name? At least let me prepare myself.”
Maybe she’s lying and the man is actually a troll. A fat, ugly troll.
Something about this whole marriage feels so off. My father promised me he wouldn’t marry me off till I was twenty-five, but all of a sudden I’m getting married now with barely any heads-up.
What could my father possibly be up to?
“Stop being a brat, Sofia, you know how this works,” my mum said in annoyance. “Instead of spending time making inquiries about who he is, how about you spend time with Nana and learn a thing or two about satisfying your husband? We don’t have time.”
I palmed my face. I couldn't believe my mother was being so unreasonable. Maybe I should just talk to Dad; he loves me and gives me everything I want.
Defeated, I asked, “When is the wedding?”
She didn’t respond immediately. The silence that fell between us was deafening, choking the hell out of me. Something told me whatever she was about to say, I wouldn’t like it.
“In two days.”
My stomach dropped straight to the floor.
Chapter 5SOFIA POVOkay. Maybe I'd somehow died at the hands of those masked men and ended up in the afterlife because there was no way this man standing in front of me was real, let alone my husband.“Shall we continue from where you stopped at the altar?” His husky voice wrapped around me.“Last time I checked, you didn't have a walking stick, you're not seventy-five, and my husband doesn't look this good.” I huffed. His lips curled into a smirk as he slipped his hands into his pockets. His blue eyes were cold. Unbelievably cold.Nothing like any man I had ever laid eyes on. Then again, this wasn't just any man. He was Adrien Mercer, the man they called the Brooding Devil. He had a reputation to match the name.“Miss Ross, is it your wish to marry Rico Drake?” he asked. Why was he asking me that? What business did he have with the man I was supposed to marry?“I don't think my dear old husband's business is any of yours, Mr. New York. But you're behind my kidnapping, aren't you?” I
Sofia POV When I finally woke up, my head felt like it was being split into two by God knows what. I squinted my eyes, taking in where I was. I was in a dimly lit room on a big massive bed. The rest of the room was empty. Well... except for a chair at the side. Where in the hell am I? How in the hell did I end up here? I held my throbbing head as I winced in pain. Everything that happened today came rushing back in waves. Did I get married? Am I in my husband's house? No, that couldn't be possible. I was kidnapped and dragged off. Shit! I quickly slid off the bed and sprinted for the door, grabbing the handle and pulling hard. “You've got to be fucking shitting me!” God no. I pulled it again and again, but it wouldn't budge. “Who is there?! Let me out!” I yelled, slamming my palm against the door. It stung so hard my palm instantly turned red and sore. “You better let me out right now! If my father finds me, I swear to God before he hands y'all to the police
Sofia POVAs I walked down the aisle with my father's arm linked through mine, my eyes glistened with tears as I looked at the man waiting for me at the altar."Dad..." My voice came out shaky as I tried not to trip over my heels with the anxiety burning through me. "Why did you do this to me?""He's not bad, Sofia. He'll take care of you." He gave me a tight smile."More like I'll be taking care of him," I bit back harshly."Behave, Sofia. People are watching."How in the hell was I supposed to behave? The world was about to watch me marry a man who didn't just have a pot belly. He was older than my father, used a walking stick, and could barely stand on his own without the two bodyguards planted on either side of him.The worst part?He was smiling.Actually smiling.Like he'd just won the biggest prize of his life.I tightened my grip around the stupid bouquet in my hands.I hated roses.I preferred lilies. But of course none of this had been planned with me.I glanced around the h
SOFIA POVIt's pointless arguing with my mother. There's no way in hell I'm getting married in two days to a man I don't know shit about.Who the hell does that?Does Father think we're still in the 1800s? Or was it the 900s? Whatever. Somewhere people thought this nonsense was normal. It's ridiculous. Bat shit crazy.I didn't bother knocking. I swung the door open the moment I reached Father's study and marched inside. My father's head snapped up. He sat behind his desk looking tired as hell."Sofia?" His voice came out strained.I didn't answer him."Dad, tell me it's a lie. Tell me whatever Mum came to tell me was nothing but a birthday prank that's probably going to end with me on a plane to Satroperez as my birthday gift." I bit out angrily. My stomach knotted at the look on Father's face."I guess your mother spoke to you." He dropped his glasses onto the desk and leaned back in his chair.I hurried over and sat in the chair opposite him, leaning forward."Dad, please tell me it
