The next day proved to be almost the same except that Ian and his friends seemed to avoid Amanda while Parker seemed to be more mean to her. Everywhere Amanda went, it seemed as if he was trailing her, a steady reminder that he could pounce on her at anytime.
"I heard he's 18 years." Emily said over their lunch break.
The girls were sitting on a table, quite far away from the other students. Nobody wanted to associate with them. In fact, they avoided them like the plague. "18? Wow, that's a bit old. Not so old though compared to our seniors back then." Leslie said. "What about his family? Or is he alone?" Amanda asked. For some days now, she had been thinking about him. She hated to admit it but she felt this strong pull towards him like there was an invisible cord drawing them closer. "According to my sources... Don't ask me who they are." Emily chuckled."His parents just relocated to New York City because of his father's business which crumbled in London. His father had another partnership business in New York and decided to move them here." Emily said. "So, it seems like Parker has changed school a lot?" Leslie asked. "Yes, I think so." Emily said."To be honest girls, I think he just lacks love. I mean, from what Emily said it seemed as if his parents don't care about him what with travelling all over the place. A child like that would be deprived of love." Amanda said. "But that's no excuse for bullying. No matter what, bullying is bad and should be frowned at." Emily said."Tell that to Ian and those dwibs." Amanda said. After their break was over, the girls went to their various classes. This was the only time they had different subjects based on their fields. When Amanda walked into the class, she was met with so many of her mates who had already settled down for the class. Amanda searched for where to sit but all the seats were already taken. The only one left was the one beside her archenemy, Parker. He smirked when he noticed her dilemma. He knew that she had no option but to sit beside him. Amanda moved steadily towards the seat even as she knew that all eyes were on her. She sat down, placing her bag on her lap. She slipped on her glasses just as the teacher walked into the class. "Fancy seeing you here." Parker mocked. "Of course, it's a class and I'm expected to be here." Amanda said. From the look on his face, Amanda could tell that he didn't expect her to talk back at him. The truth was ever since that day at the alley, she hated his guts. He was even worse than Ian and his friends and that was saying something. She couldn't understand why somebody she just met hated her so much without any reason."I see you're a smart mouth huh? I'll teach you a lesson." he growled.Amanda ignored him, pulling out her books from her bag. The teacher began teaching, going round the class to inspect the students as he spoke. When he got to their table, he stopped for some time, peering down at their books."Why aren't you writing young man."the teacher said.Parker sat up, facing the teacher. Up until then, Amanda hadn't noticed that he wasn't writing. She was so engrossed with what the teacher was saying that she paid little to no attention to anything around her. "I don't have a pen sir." Parker said. "That's like you going to the farm without your instruments." The teacher said.Just then, Amanda remembered that she had an extra pen in her bed. Fishing it out, she handed it over to him. He smirked, pinching her hands a bit unknown to the teacher. Amanda hissed from the sharp pain, trying so desperately to hide it from the teacher. She couldn't understand why she was protecting him, it felt weird. "Thank you Amanda." the teacher said before walking away.Amanda breathed a huge sigh of relief. That was very close, one that could have gotten them into trouble. There was no doubt that the school authorities would punish Parker severely for harming another student. Not that she would feel sorry for him, it's just that it wasn't in her to be intentionally wicked."You know, you could have given me the pen earlier to avoid everything you went through now." he whispered. His breath on her neck had her shivering. She gripped her pen tighter as she tried to fight off the wave of emotions that threatened to overwhelm her. For someone she hated so much, she didn't understand what kind of emotions she was feeling."Are you serious now, no tell me are you really serious right now Parker?" Amanda seethed. Her rising voice got the attention of the students sitting closer to them. Amanda's hands shook as she struggled to grasp what the teacher was saying. Parker was a bad influence, a drug and a poison."Oh, I'm damn serious Amanda and I'm going to make you pay for that. Now, how do you want your punishment. Your head down the school toilet or picking litters in the cafeteria?" Parker said.Amanda ignored him, putting all her mind in the teacher's words. She was the best in class and she wouldn't allow anyone disturb that. "So, I'm going to be giving out an assignment. It's going to be like a group work. You and your seat partners are going to be working on the project together. Get it done before the next class. Have a wonderful day students." the teacher said, walking out of the class.Amanda could hardly believe what he said. Never in her wildest dreams could she have thought she'd be working with someone like Ian, someone she hated so very much. Deep down, she knew that this was going to be hard. She had just stood up, ready to inform the teacher that she couldn't work with him when Parker slammed her back to her seat."Where do you think you're going"? he growled.Amanda decided to put on a brave front, she wouldn't be scared. Brandon could do anything he liked but she would never work with him."A change of partners. I can't.. work with you." She croaked. She hated how her voice sounded. She didn't want to appear weak yet she was giving every sign of being so."That's not going to happen sweetheart. You're stuck with me." He grinned.Somehow, that grin reminded Amanda of a predator about to pounce on his prey. At that moment, she didn't know what to do. Parker had her in a stronghold, a place she couldn't get out of. "Do you even have any idea on what we're supposed to do?" Parker said. She had an inkling that he didn't know what they were supposed to do. He was so full of himself and what's more, he never had any idea what they were supposed to do."Why then do I have you here. Of course, you'd be doing all the work."he said."If you think for one minute I'd be doing all the work then you must be ridiculous, I would never." Amanda vowed. "Fine. Just because I'm in a good mood, we'll be splitting the work. When do we start?" Parker said."We'll start at the close of school today. Let's meet in the hall, there won't be any disturbances there." Amanda said.Parker nodded, leaving the class without another word. Amanda sighed as she made her way towards the locker room. "Who's the worst nerd in the school." Larry sneered. "Oh I don't know maybe a little girl named Amanda." Ian laughed.Amanda decided to keep quiet. They weren't worth her time and she wouldn't stop and argue with people who had no vision whatsoever."Too dumb to speak?" Ian sneered. "Don't you have better things to do, rather than pestering me?" Amanda said. For a moment, Ian was dumfounded. He would have never imagined that Amanda could speak to him in such a manner. He smiled, a smile that didn't quite reach his eyes. Amanda fought to keep her's down as she slowly backed away. She soon got to the locker room, taking her books out of the locker. She still had one more class before the close of the day and she dreaded meeting Parker. She had no choice though if she intended to pass the subject. It was a sacrifice she was willing to take, one that might not be convenient but all the same, she would manage."I just have to get past his stupid pride and hate." she muttered. As she walked towards her next class, Amanda made up her mind to lead the project. She wouldn't sit back and watch him lord over her. That would be last thing she'd do.The Hall was quiet when Amanda walked in. She hadn't expected Parker to be so early especially with the kind of person he was. She made her way to a set of chairs at the far right of the hall that had an ample view of the doors. She wouldn't be caught off guard incase he decided to sneak up on her in one of his numerous sick games. She was going to determine how this project worked. It was her way or nothing else.Few minutes later, Parker walked into the hall. Upon seeing her, he smiled before walking over to where she sat."I didn't think you'd be early." he said. "Are you kidding me. I'm never late, I kind of expected you'd be late so I'm not surprised." Amanda said.Parker pursed his lips as he took a seat. Amanda sighed, bringing out the books they would work with. She flipped to a page, reading the instructions they were to follow. Parker wasn't listening as he busied himself with his phone, tapping without a care in the world."Are you even listening to me. This is not how this
In school the next day, Amanda went straight to Mr Jefferson's office to explain why she couldn't work with her partner. Upon getting to his office, she knocked lightly, waiting for the go ahead to come in."Amanda. Yes, what can I do for you?" he asked. He was a tall lean man with a head full of hair. His glasses was perched on his nose as he peered down on the paper he was holding. When he spoke, it was with a thick foreign accent that she couldn't quite place. "Sir, I've come to inform you that I wouldn't be working with my partner anymore." She said."I see. If I may ask, why is this so".Amanda proceeded to explain all that had happened. If there was one teacher whom she could say that didn't tolerate laziness of any kind, it was Mr Jefferson."Alright, that's fine. I hope you have yours ready?" He asked."Yes sir"."Great, you'll submit together with others when I have your class later today." he said."Thank you." Amanda said before taking her leave. She heaved a huge sigh of r
The following day was a public holiday, one of the rare days where the students could laze about doing nothing. Amanda woke up bright and early, vowing to put all her mysteries behind her. She was going to enjoy the day to the fullest and the first thing she did was to invite her friends over. Her parents weren't at home but she wasn't surprised since her mother had called earlier to inform her that she would be traveling with the rest of the archaeologists for a conference.Amanda had no idea how long but she hoped it was soon. Deep down, she really missed her parents and wished they could hold off on their numerous travels and business trips. The loud chime of the doorbell disrupted her thoughts as she quickly rushed towards the door to let them in. Emily and Leslie bounded in, carrying bags filled with snacks. Amanda had no idea they were bringing this and was quite surprised. "Oh guys, you shouldn't have done this." she said. "Let it never be heard that the great Emily came to
The following day in school, Amanda gave her friends the rundown of everything she discovered. They were quite surprised on hearing this news and couldn't quite believe that Parker's father was a victim of the Ponzi scheme."Now, I know why he's here. They needed a fresh start, away from all the things that reminded them of their problems." Emily said. The girls were currently in the cafeteria, munching on their food. It was another dull day ar school as not much activity was held due to the term slowly coming to an end. Most of their projects and assignments were already submitted and they were counting down to the day for the exam."Ian and his friends are organizing a party this weekend." Emily said."Nice of them to do that but I ain't going." Leslie said."Same here. I can't present myself to be bullied anymore, I'm tired of it." Amanda said."True though. If you girls aren't going, I'm not going either. Friends stick together. But seriously, Amanda, you really need to report this
The next day, Amanda woke up with a renewed strength. She vowed that nothing was going to spoil her day. Not Parker not Ian or his friends. As Amanda prepared for school that day, she made a promise to stand her ground no matter what happened. Her phone gave a sharp beep, indicating she had a call. The caller ID showed that it was her mother calling."Hey mum." she beamed. She had missed her mum a lot and couldn't wait for the day she got back home from her trip. Ever since she left, she had been all alone in the house, lasting about without any one to talk to."Hey darling, how have you been?" her mum said from the other end."I'm just here mum. I miss you, when are you coming home." Amanda said."I'll be home sooner than you expect, don't worry. I'm sorry, this is taking so long to finish but don't worry, I'll be home soon", she said."Okay mum, I'll hold you by your words." she laughed."How is school? Any problems, do you need anything?"Amanda couldn't think of anything she needed
Amanda's mother came back late one night under a heavy downpour. As she stepped into the lobby, the rain got heavier drenching everything in its path. Not minding that she was wet, Amanda ran towards her mother, giving her a big hug."Mom!" She screamed."Hi baby, I've missed you." her mother said."Me too, even more." Amanda said. They made their way to the living room, Amanda was so glad her mother was here. "You know what darling, let me run upstairs then get out of my wet clothes then we'll talk. Is that okay?" her mother said."Sure Mom. And don't you worry, dinner is on me. Let me fix up something quickly." Amanda said making her way to the kitchen."Thanks honey." her mother said.Amanda was a good cook and she had no troubles preparing a delicious pot of spaghetti. Within thirty minutes, the food was ready just as her mother came downstairs."Something smells delicious." her mother hummed."Spaghetti mom, your favorite. Shall I serve?" Amanda smiled."Absolutely! Lord knows I'
In all of her 17 years of existence, Amanda had never felt this sad and dejected. The news of Leslie's mum's death hit them hard. They were currently in her house, trying to console her which proved to be a difficult task considering the circumstances surrounding her death. It had been a secret even for Emily and Amanda as none of them knew that Leslie's mother had been battling with breast cancer all her life. Leslie hid it so well that none of them knew anything not until she died."It's okay Les, please. She wouldn't want to see you like this." Amanda said."I don't understand, she was fine about a week ago. Then all of a sudden, she slumpe right in my arms. I had to dial 911, before calling my dad who was frantic the whole journey home. I'm so confused right now." Leslie sobbed.Emily and Amanda comforted her as best as they could but Leslie was inconsolable as she sobbed harder. About an hour later, her father walked in wearing a grim expression. The girls could tell that he was t
At the close of school, Emily and Amanda made their way to Leslie's locker. They needed to pack her things since they didn't know the time she'd be coming back. They had already gotten the permission from the principal before doing this lest they'd be in trouble for raiding another student's locker. When they were done, they left the school grounds which were already desolate and lonely. The only students who seemed to be within school were those taking extra lessons or those who served punishments for one crime or the other. "Em, could you please take Leslie's bag to her. I just remembered, I won't be going home directly. I need to pick up something from the mart first." Amanda said "Sure, don't be long. I'll be at Leslie's." Emily said."Okay, see you later".Amanda made her way out of the school, hailing a cab that was passing by. The cab was occupied as it simply drove away. Amanda decided to ditch getting a ride and simply walked the short distance to the Mart. A few meters awa
