Raina's POV

It felt like my feet were trapped in wet sand, and just when I tried to pull free, someone dumped a bag of rocks on my shoulders, forcing me to stay still and bear the weight. That was how bad it felt.

Every bone and muscle in my body ached. Even opening my eyes was a battle; they felt heavy, like I hadn’t slept in months. But I knew that wasn’t true. I’d been drifting in and out of consciousness for a while now. The faint murmurs, the blurry faces—they weren’t dreams. They were fragments of reality, slipping through the cracks as my body fought to stay alert.

The face leaning over me wore an expression of worry and concern, but it wasn’t one I expected to see anytime soon. For a second, I doubted my sanity.

“You said she should’ve come around by now, but she’s still barely awake,” the voice said, tinged with frustration and worry as it addressed someone just out of sight.

I knew that voice. I would recognize it anywhere. She wasn’t supposed to be in town until the holida

Liam's POVThe scent hit me the moment I stepped into Crimson Pulse. A cocktail of blood, booze and bad decisions clung to the air like humidity on a hot night. The place pulsed with energy, a dark, rhythmic heartbeat that throbbed through the floor and into my bones.Vampires writhed on the dance floor beneath flickering red lights, their bodies tangled together in some twisted blend of hunger and lust. Some fed openly, fangs in necks, blood dripping down collarbones. Others watched, waiting for their turn. Fang bangers—those idiotic humans who flirted with death like it was an aphrodisiac—laughed and moaned, too lost in their fantasy to know they were seconds from never waking up.I wasn’t here to play.My boots thudded against the sleek black marble, every step cutting through the music like a blade. Eyes tracked me from all corners of the room, some curious, some wary, most smart enough to look away once they realized who I was.I didn’t stop. Didn’t pause to be acknowledged. The

Liam's POV I intercepted Ian on his way to his room, blocking his path just before he could step in. He glared at me, then with a gesture of his hand, dismissed his assistants.“Speak,” he ordered.I arched a brow. Since when did he become cocky?Dismissing it with an awkward laugh, I gave him a playful punch. “Good to see you, too.”His gaze flickered to the spot where my fist met his shoulder and lingered. I swallowed, the air suddenly filled with tension.“So… that was a gripping speech,” I said, chuckling. He brushed past me, hands removing his cufflinks. “Wasn't meant to be. Just wanted to pass a message.”I followed him in, totally not noticing the massive king-sized bed, the humming AC above, or the perfectly aligned suits in his walk-in closet. Not at all.“Consider your message received.”“Good,” he muttered, tossing his jacket onto the bed.I folded my arms and leaned against the door. “Any plans?”He sighed, loosening his tie as he strutted to his almost floor-to-ceiling w

Liam POVVampires rarely gathered in a place unless it was an emergency or to feed. Since I knew it was neither, I had a growing curiosity just like everyone else as we waited for Ian to address us.Of course, I tried to get a word with Ian when I'd gone back to his mansion in the city, but they wouldn't let me in. According to his orders, any conversation would have to wait till after the meeting.Biting down my irritation, I waited downstairs in a hall big enough to hold a ballroom dance, and sipped on some blood bag I'd gotten from the refreshment counter.I isolated myself from everyone, not bothering to be courteous when I hissed and flipped off any vampire who tried to talk to me. Well, except for the two vampires flanking my side—my informants.“Ugh, I hate meetings in fancy rooms, with fancy lights and arranged blood bags,” Judy scowled, picking her finger with a dagger.Zade laughed. “You're just jealous he's rich and you're not.”She rolled her eyes. “I'm a vampire too, fine

  • The Devourer: A Vampire's Curse   Chapter 25

Raina's POV The low murmurs of sympathizers and hypocritical well-wishers were what I woke up to. As you might’ve guessed, today wasn’t one of those days I woke up on the right side of the bed. I was pissed.I didn’t want their pity. Not from the neighbors who suddenly remembered I existed. Not from the so-called friends who hadn’t reached out to me in years. Their sad eyes and sorry faces only made it worse.Without speaking to anyone, I showered, put on my uniform, and left the house before they could stop me. I didn’t slow down when some neighbor tried to pat my arm and mutter something about ‘hope’. I didn’t react when Uncle Garett decided today was the perfect day to confess he’d known about my ‘unemployment’ situation for a while. One look at my face, and everyone kept their distance.Truth was, I had no idea where I was going. Normally, I’d use this opportunity to focus on work, but since I’d missed work for more than three days without calling in, Frank had fired me through t

  • The Devourer: A Vampire's Curse   Chapter 24

Raina's POV Lies.I haven't said anything about a lead, yet he knew. I acted like I didn't notice the slip, or the way his mannerisms shifted a bit when I asked the question. Whatever his reason for lying was, I knew I wouldn't get it out by confrontation. I'd just have to play along for now. I faked a small smile when we reached my front door and let go of him. “Thanks for walking me home.”He shoved his hands into his jeans pocket. “Anytime.”We stood on the porch staring at each other in silence for a while. I half-expected him to break the silence and say he was leaving, but he just stood there, shifting uncomfortably on his feet. His eyes scanned our surroundings, before returning it back to me. “Do you mind me keeping you company till your uncle comes? I just…I don't feel comfortable leaving you home alone.”If it had been any other day before I found out he lied, I would have invited him in. His company usually made me feel safe. But now that I knew he was hiding something,
