Chapter 2

Penulis: Sweet Beet
The swelling in my throat from the allergic reaction made it impossible to swallow. I started vomiting uncontrollably.

Seeing this, Dad kicked me again. "You little brat. Are you trying to gross someone out on purpose?"

Mom pulled Katrina closer and stepped back a few paces, as if I were something filthy.

My vision began to blur, and large patches of red rashes spread across my arms. Driven by survival instinct, I reached out to them one more time.

"M-Mom, save me."

Mom frowned at the rashes covering my arms. "What if something's really wrong? Maybe we should just give her the medicine."

Katrina immediately said, "I know where Chelsea's medicine is. I'll go get it."

She hurried inside and emerged moments later with a pill in her hand. Then, she bent down as if to help me take it.

But I recognized immediately that it wasn't my allergy medicine. I pressed my lips together in protest.

Without hesitating, Katrina grabbed my jaw and shoved the pill into my mouth. Then, she leaned close and whispered in my ear, "You can't blame me for doing this, Chelsea.

"If you'd just stayed in the countryside where you belonged, none of this would be happening. But no, you had to come here and compete with me for Mom and Dad's love. Today, I'm going to make you regret it if it's the last thing I do."

When I first came to the city for high school, I was nothing special academically. The gap between rural and urban education was just too wide.

And after years of exposure to the sun and wind back in the countryside, I looked plain and faded, like everything about me had been dulled.

Because of this, my parents and Katrina all thought I was an embarrassment. None of them wanted to be associated with me in public. In fact, when it came to school opening ceremonies, they only ever went to Katrina's.

Desperate to earn their attention, I threw myself into my studies. Finally, during the final exams of my freshman year of high school, I got first place in the entire grade.

The school publicly recognized my achievement and even awarded me a scholarship.

For the first time, my parents' attention shifted just slightly from Katrina to me. They tossed me a scrap of acknowledgement, as if it were charity.

"Your father and I will be there with you at the opening ceremony of your sophomore year."

That single sentence was enough to send me over the moon with joy. I thought that if I just kept working hard, someday my parents would love me the way they loved Katrina.

It was never my intention to compete with Katrina for anything. I just wanted Mom and Dad to acknowledge my existence. After all, they were my parents too.

Never did I imagine that this simple wish would drive Katrina to want me dead.

With nothing but resentment and hatred burning in my eyes, I bit down hard on the finger Katrina had used to force the pill into my mouth.

She let out a bloodcurdling scream. "My hand!"

Seeing this, Mom and Dad immediately slapped me across the face several times. Then, they pried my jaw open and pulled Katrina's finger free.

The moment he saw the deep teeth marks on her skin, Dad kicked me again without mercy and roared, "You animal! Katrina is your sister! How could you be so vile?"

Yes. She was my twin sister, and yet she had just tried to kill me.

Holding Katrina's hand gently, Mom frantically cleaned the wound with alcohol and put a Band-Aid on it.

Dad hovered close by, showering her with concern and comfort.

The three of them huddled together, forming a tight little circle.

No one noticed me, lying on the floor, dying.

Katrina nestled in Mom's arms, her face full of wounded innocence.

"Mom, how could Chelsea do this to me? I was only trying to help."

Mom shot me a furious glare. "She grew up wild in the countryside, and now she's completely uncivilized. I'm sending her back there to work the fields right now."

Dad nodded in agreement. "Exactly. With a heart this poisonous, keeping her around is just asking for trouble. She belongs in the countryside for good."

With that, he reached down and yanked me up from the floor.

But my eyes were shut tight, my whole body convulsing and trembling. I couldn't stand at all. The moment he let go, I collapsed straight back down.

It was written there in black and white. And since they were still in the detention center, Katrina naturally didn't dare deny what she'd done. Her eyes darted away. "Mom, I just wanted to teach Chelsea a lesson. I never actually meant to kill her."That one sentence was all the confirmation Mom needed."How could you do something like this? Chelsea was your sister! You grew up right by our side—your father and I gave you all our love and attention."You already had so much more than Chelsea ever did. Why were you so greedy? Just because your father and I showed her a little bit of care, you wanted to destroy her?"Katrina had been coddled and adored her entire life. The moment Mom turned on her with reproach, she felt wronged and terrified."You and Dad are the ones to blame!" she roared. "After 16 years of being your only child, why did you have to bring Chelsea home? Why did you let her take everything from me?"I won't allow it! I won't allow her to steal even a little bit o

As I grew older, the kids around me always called me tacky and ugly.Over time, I started to feel resentful. So, when Grandma held out another handmade coat, I threw a tantrum and tossed it on the ground."I don't want to wear this anymore. I want to buy clothes from the store."Grandma picked up the coat and said cajolingly, "Store-bought clothes are expensive. Even a simple one costs 200 dollars. The coats I make for you are just as warm."But by then, I had already developed a sense of vanity and comparison. I felt so wronged. Why did Katrina always come back dressed like a princess, while I was stuck wearing these ugly homemade clothes?I cried for a very long time. That very afternoon, Grandma walked with me for an hour to get to the street market. There, she bought me the pink coat I had been dreaming of.It wasn't as pretty as Katrina's. But at that very moment, it was the most beautiful thing in the world. The coat became my favorite, and I wore it longer than anything

From the side, Grandma's low and heavy voice cut through."Back when you had the twins, you told me you couldn't manage two kids on your own, so you asked me to raise one for you. And I'd agreed. But I never imagined that decision would rob Chelsea of 16 years of her parents' love."From the moment she was old enough to understand, she spent every waking moment wishing she could live with you, to know what it felt like to have a family."But you two kept saying you were too busy, as if she weren't even your own flesh and blood. 16 years she waited, and the moment she finally made it to your side, you killed her in less than a year."Don't you feel any guilt? Don't you fear that one night, when you close your eyes, Chelsea will come back to haunt you?"Confronted by Grandma's tearful accusations, Mom was the first to break. She collapsed to her knees beside my bed."Chelsea, my dear daughter, I'm so sorry."Dad let out an anguished cry. "What have I done? I killed my own daughter

Looking at Mom and Dad crying before her, Grandma slapped each of them angrily across the face. Then, she said in a voice heavy with pain, "How could you do something so monstrous? Even a wild beast doesn't devour its own young!"Dad dropped to his knees before Grandma. "Mom, Chelsea's death really was an accident. None of us wanted this. But she's already gone—there's no need to drag the rest of us down with her. I still have to take care of you in your old age."Mom chimed in urgently, "Mom, David is your only son. Can you really bear to see your one and only child go to prison?""Grandma, Chelsea was your granddaughter, but so am I! You can't play favorites and only care about her," Katrina sobbed.Under the tearful pleas of all three of them, Grandma's grip on the phone finally loosened. She looked at Dad with weary, defeated eyes and asked, "Then what do you plan to do?""We'll bury her in secret and tell everyone she died of an illness."Grandma turned to Mom and Katrina,

Dad's hands trembled violently as he reached under my nose to see if I was still breathing."C-Chelsea's not breathing," he said in alarm.Mom rushed over and knelt beside me, frantically examining my body.By then, I had been dead for seven or eight hours. My body was cold, and my lips had turned a dark purple. Even the rashes on my arm, the ones caused by my allergic reaction, had darkened into a shocking mottled purple. The moment she took in the sight of me, Mom was struck dumb with horror. Her words came out in broken fragments."How… Chelsea… How did she die?"At the sight, Grandma was so shaken she dropped her cane. She staggered toward me unsteadily, only to fall flat on the ground.Dad rushed over and helped her up. "Mom, be careful! Are you okay? Did you hurt yourself?"Grandma shoved his hand away and crawled to my side, her trembling hands reached out to stroke my face again and again."Chelsea, what's wrong? Open your eyes, please. Look at me." Tears flowed down f

Mom fetched a glass of water and splashed it across my face."Don't you dare play dead just because we mentioned sending you back to the countryside."I lay motionless on the floor, my breathing growing even fainter."Don't think for a second this will make me go easy on you. I'm taking you back today, you animal!"Dad grabbed me by the arm and half-dragged me down the stairs, then stuffed me into the trunk of the car. This wasn't the first time I'd been thrown into the trunk. The first time I ended up in the trunk was when they came to the countryside to bring me to the city.At first, Katrina and I were both sitting in the back seat. But somewhere along the way, Katrina got sleepy. She squirmed and shifted, unable to get comfortable. Finally, she asked Mom and Dad with a pout, "Can Chelsea lie down in the trunk? That way I can stretch my legs and sleep better."So, Mom and Dad pulled the car over and made me climb into the trunk. For five whole hours, I curled up into the sm
