My daughter, Bessie Garcia, had very little self-discipline. The only reason she studied at all was that I constantly pushed her. Three months before the SATs, I could not resist sending a question to myself ten years into the future. “Did Bessie get into an Ivy League school? What kind of job does she have now? Please tell me the last three years of hard work were worth it! How far have Meera and I gotten on our trip around the world? Did we have a second child?” A hopeful smile spread across my face. Then, I saw the man on the other side of the screen. His skin was sallow. He was so thin that he was almost unrecognizable. “An Ivy League school? After graduation, she publicly accused you of controlling and emotionally abusing her for more than ten years. The entire internet branded you a sick, controlling father. Meera divorced you and went on to have a child with her first love. As for you… years of staying up late, putting your life on hold, and constantly supervising Bessie’s studies left you with terminal pancreatic cancer. Your daughter and ex-wife have cut you out of their lives completely. You have only one month left to live.” I was stunned. Just then, Bessie’s voice sounded from her room as she talked to someone online. “My dad? He’s a pathetic control freak. His wife doesn’t love him, so he takes it out on me by trying to control my life. The more he forces me to study, the worse I’ll bomb the exams! Watching him lose his mind in rage is the only satisfaction I get. Once the SATs are over, I’m moving out and cutting him out of my life for good!” Tears splashed against the back of my hand. A moment later, I withdrew her from every SATs prep course and sent her a text. [You don’t have to attend those tutoring classes anymore. From now on, I won’t ask anything of you. It’s your life, so you should get to decide how to live it.]

After that, I opened an academic support center for high school students. With all the years of experience I had accumulated, the business quickly became a success. As for Meera and Bessie, they were not nearly as fortunate. On a reckless whim, Meera sold the house and drained her parents’ retirement savings to send Bessie abroad. At first, Bessie resolved to work her way through school, study hard, and return home as soon as possible. But over time, she succumbed to the allure of a life filled with nightlife and indulgence. She dropped out without telling Meera and developed a gambling problem. She constantly called home to ask for money.Meera had drained her savings. Her life became increasingly difficult.Less than two years later, she was diagnosed with lung cancer and did not have long to live.Meanwhile, Bessie continued spiraling overseas. She was drinking, partying, gambling, and sleeping around.I heard all of this from one of my students’ parents.I merely smiled.

As soon as she said that, everyone looked shocked. Meera turned to Sam. “Sam, you told me Bessie was improving. Tell me how she ended up like this!”With the truth exposed, Sam finally dropped the act. “She was an average student to begin with, and she has absolutely no self-discipline. What was I supposed to do? I catered to her every whim, fed her answers, and helped fake her test scores because I wanted her to get through the SATs so you and I could finally get married without any complications! Now she has caused this huge scandal, and I’m the one who’s being humiliated?!”Sam spoke as though he had done nothing wrong.Bessie trembled with rage, looking as though she might explode. She raised her hand to strike Sam, but Meera grabbed her arm. “Enough! Both of you, shut up! Haven’t you embarrassed me enough?”In the end, all three of them were taken away by the police for questioning.I turned and walked away as Bessie’s hysterical cries sounded behind me. “Dad, don’

The disappointment in Principal Harris’ eyes cut Bessie deeply. “Bessie, no matter how desperate you were, you should never have resorted to cheating. Your grades have been excellent lately. Even before that, you consistently ranked among the top two hundred students in your grade. How could you make such a terrible decision?”I cut in.“Those recent grades were fake too.”I pulled up the messages I had saved and handed my phone to Principal Harris.“She’s been paying people to help her cheat and buying devices to sneak answers into her exams. It’s right there.”Bessie stared at me in disbelief. Her lips quivered, but no sound came out.Meera was so furious that she raised her hand to slap me.She stumbled past me as I stepped aside.“Ron, have you lost your mind? She is your daughter! Are you so determined to destroy her that you can’t rest until it’s done?”“It’s exactly because she’s my daughter that I have to make sure she understands that doing something like this is wr

“What?!”Meera’s voice shot up into a shrill, cracking pitch. She kept demanding that the caller repeat himself, sounding more frantic each time. “You must have the wrong person. Bessie had the second-highest score in her grade! Why would she need to cheat? Oh, I get it! This is a scam. Go to hell!”Her hand was still trembling when she ended the call. Then, she caught the faintly amused look in my eyes. Her body went rigid.“Why are you looking at me like that? It couldn’t have been Bessie! She’s ranked second in her grade. She would never do something like that!”Her phone rang again. She stumbled out of the reception area, and she could not bring herself to answer it.“It can’t be…”She shot me a vicious glare. “Did you pull some strings to do this? You never wanted this divorce in the first place, did you? Now that Bessie is doing well without you, you’re trying to ruin her reputation! Ron, what kind of father would be this cruel?”I could not help but scoff and roll
