Chapter 3

Author: Little Hedgehog
My mom? Didn't Zack say she died because a drunk driver hit her when she was out buying cake for me? How did drug dealers get involved in this?

I turned to look at Zack in disbelief.

"It's possible. After all, only heartless scums like drug dealers would do something this cruel!" His expression changed suddenly. "Shit! Madie is alone at home!"

Zack immediately dug out his phone.

Officer Wright turned to the others and said, "You all should quickly get in touch with your families too."

Zack made several calls, but no one picked up. He immediately started panicking, his hand began to tremble uncontrollably while holding the phone.

"No…No…surely nothing would happen to Madie!" he mumbled before turning to bolt out of the door.

Officer Wright hurriedly yelled, "Stop him!"

"Let me go!" Zack struggled desperately. Despite his thin frame, he managed to knock down three burly police officers.

"I'm going to look for my sister! Stop blocking my way!" He angrily pushed away those blocking him, eyes red.

I was stunned seeing how Zack was losing it. He wasn't this out of control even when Mom had her accident.

It turned out he cared a lot about Madison.

My chest felt unbearably tight as a deep ache settled within me.

At that moment, Zack's phone suddenly rang.

"Hello, Zack?" Madison's somewhat lazy tone came through, and he immediately relaxed.

After ending the call, Zack turned to apologize to the others. "Sorry, guys—I got a little carried away earlier."

I felt upset seeing how he'd calmed down once again.

I was also his sister. Why wasn't he worried about my whereabouts too?

I bit down on my lips, yet tears rolled down my cheeks.

At that moment, a police officer walked over. "We found more human remains, Officer Wright."

He then placed the black plastic bag on the autopsy table. As soon as it was opened, a foul stench of blood mixed with decay hit everyone.

Everyone couldn't help but frown in discomfort.

Zack was the only one who seemed like he didn't notice the smell at all, calmly taking the bones and chunks of flesh out of the bag.

After a good six hours, he finally stopped to look at Officer Wright. "This is probably the victim's entire body."

"Any new findings?" Officer Wright asked anxiously.

Hearing this, Zack's expression turned serious. "The victim is missing a kidney."

My breath caught upon hearing that I was missing a kidney.

I smiled bitterly. It wasn't missing at all—after all, it was inside Zack.

Back then, he developed kidney failure at a young age due to a hereditary condition. I managed to donate one of my kidneys to him in secret with Mom's help.

Zack completely lost it after learning the truth. He even held a knife against his neck, threatening the doctor to return the kidney to me.

I had to beg him not to hurt himself—or I would kill myself following him as well. Only then did he drop the knife.

Zack then hugged me tightly and cried. "I'm sorry, Sandy. It's all my fault—I never should've let you go through so much pain. That anesthesia shot must have hurt a lot! What would you do without a kidney now?"

Since then, he grew even more attentive and caring for me. That was the happiest moment in my life.

I wondered if Zack still remembered that.

At that moment, he seemed to have recalled something. His expression grew anxious when he said, "I know it now!"

My heart stopped for a moment. Did Zack finally realize that I was the one lying on the autopsy table now?

Madison's expression went pale with shock when she saw Zack rush in suddenly. "Weren't…weren't you out to get hot water, Zack? Why are you back so soon?" He kept quiet, merely staring at her. His eyes were filled with anger and disappointment."What have you overheard, Zack? I…I can explain," Madison said carefully."Was what he said the truth? You told them Sandra's whereabouts, and paid them 300 thousand dollars to kill her?" Zack asked."No…that's not it!" Madison panickedly waved her hands. The man scoffed. "What do you mean that's not it? I still have the transaction details—and the call recordings too."He then turned to Zack. "I've heard so much about you, Dr. Smith. Seeing you reminds me of that poor sister of yours. Her bones were really tough. My men and I had to hammer away for hours before we could finally break them."She screamed until she lost her voice. Even a drug dealer like me couldn't help but pity her. But I have to say—that sister of yours is truly a wonde

Zack still loved me back then. Every day after school, he would bring me to all the places I loved.Once, we went out to play and forgot to bring an umbrella—we ended up soaked to the bone. By the time we went home, I had a high fever. Zack grew frantic. After waiting for a taxi that never came, he carried me on his back and ran all the way to the hospital. My fever slowly started to come down after they hooked me up to an IV.And just like now, Zack stood by the hospital bed with tears in his eyes. "I failed to take good care of you."The same sentence in a similar setting—yet I was no longer the one he was speaking to.The person Zack was worried about was no longer me."I'm thirsty, Zack," Madison said hoarsely once they were back in the ward.Zack's heart ached seeing the way she was. "The doctor said you need to avoid food and water for the next three hours, Madie.""What should I do then? I'm so thirsty I could die," Madison replied weakly.Zack then asked the nurse fo

Seeing the anguish on Zack's face, Officer Wright reached out to stop him from hurting himself. "Stop doing this to yourself, Zack. It's not your fault!"Zack yelled uncontrollably, "How is it not my fault? When Dad passed away, I promised him I'd take care of this family. And look what happened—Mom died a horrible death, and now even Madie's in the hospital! I don't deserve to live!"A flicker of hesitation crossed Officer Wright's eyes when he heard those words. He wasn't sure if he should tell Zack about my death—not when Zack was in such a fragile state. He was worried that Zack might do something drastic or lose his will to leave after learning the truth. After a few moments of silence, Officer Wright replied, "Take a few days off and focus on taking care of Madison, Zack."He then turned to leave.Halfway down the hall, Officer Wright seemed to recall something and stopped walking. He turned around to look at Zack. "By the way, Zack, please let me know if Sandy's boyfriend

Watching Zack hurry away, a police officer who knew nothing about my family situation asked confusedly, "Dr. Smith seems like someone who dotes on his sister judging by that. Then why was he so harsh to his other sister just now?""Don't ask questions you shouldn't be asking," Officer Wright replied coldly. He then took the lab report from the lab assistant. The moment Officer Wright saw the victim's name, his eyes widened, and his hand started to tremble."How could it be her?" Tears pooled around his eyes as he asked, voice full of disbelief."Who's that, Officer Wright?""Do you know her? Officer Wright?""Don't tell me it's one of our colleagues?"Everyone started asking around, looking anxious.Officer Wright forcefully closed the lab report. "Enough! We've confirmed the victim's identity—she's a family member of someone in our police force. This is a calculated act of revenge. "Your job now is to hunt down these scumbags! I want a full summary of the drug dealers we've

"This is…" Zack took the bag containing the Heart of the Ocean pendant and examined it carefully. It was a gift he bought me for my 15th birthday. He'd spent half a year working part-time to save up for it.Zack had personally put the necklace around my neck, telling me I'd always be his most precious princess.Since then, I never took it off—not until the drug dealers tossed my body out.Was Zack about to recognize me now?I held my breath and clenched my fists involuntarily, turning my knuckles white."Since it was found near the victim's body, it likely belongs to her. But we'll still need to run a DNA test just to be sure," Zack said.He frowned before handing the bag with the necklace to his assistant. "Put a rush to the test."I felt disappointed. It seemed like Zack no longer remembered anything that had to do with me."Alright. It's been a long night. Go grab something to eat." Officer Wright looked at everyone and said, "Let's meet back here in an hour. The DNA result

"I just remembered—could this be connected to those organ traffickers they never caught?" Zack asked seriously.I was instantly disappointed.Zack had actually forgotten about it. It seemed like he really despised me.At that moment, his phone suddenly rang. The caller ID showed that it was from me.My heart skipped a beat."Didn't I ask you to repent at Mom's grave? Why are you calling me now?" Zack answered the call irritably. An obnoxious male voice answered, "You finally remembered you've got a sister after all this time now, Dr. Smith!"A shiver ran through me. I was overwhelmed with fear and anxiety.I'd recognize that voice anywhere—he was the drug lord.He was the one who sent people to capture me and allowed his subordinates to torture me. He was also the one who recorded the entire process while those bastards assaulted me, saying that it would be a surprise for Zack.I couldn't help but tremble violently. I hadn't expected him to still have my phone.I turned to l
